If you download and install basecamp then you will also get to use mapsource. I happen to like mapsource better than basecamp to continue to use it. or Try this Step 1: Download latest version of MapSource from Garmin. http://www8.garmin.com/support/mappingsw.jsp Step 2: Rename file extension to a .rar instead of .exe Step 3: Use WinRar to extract to a folder (instead of running exe). http://www.win-rar.com/download.html?&L=0 Step 4: Run MSmain.msi file, not Setup.exe If that won't work for you let me know and I'll send you a link to the files...

Ok I'm back.. We spent two weeks touring the Maritimes.. Was an AWESOME trip. Trailered from here (Caledonia Ontario) to Edmundston NB. Only reason was to get more time on the East Coast. Gained two full days. 1200 Kms from here to Edmundston and did it in one day.. same coming home. We had 4 couples all together. 1st day crossed NB with a stop at Grand Falls. Stayed in Shediac for a night. Next day Robin's (my wife) brother who lives in Bridgetown NS met us and Robin and I split from the group to spend 3 days with her brother touring around the Annapolis Valley. The rest of the group spent 2 days in PEI and 1 day in Halifax. Next stop was Harbourview which is one cove over from Peggy's Cove. Stayed 3 nights 2 days there. Spent time in Peggy's Cove, Lunenburg etc.. Amazing roads and Scenery along the coast. Then we headed to Baddeck on Cape Breton. Spent a day on the Cabot Trail.. Cannot even begin to describe the beauty of this ride. Lost count of the "OH WOWs" When we left there we booted it to Moncton to try and beat the tide. We were successfull and spent some time on the ocean floor at Hopewell rocks.. Watched the tide come in. Was time well spent. Only down to this is that my father passed away while we were gone.. He had been failing for awhile and bed ridden. Not a surprise but just bad timing. Looking forward to heading to see Bob n Becky on Thursday as well as meeting Richard..

I'm not sure what you are expecting to see but the stock lighting on the 1st Gens isn't all that much. You would have a brake/running light and two signal lights.. The band across the trunk is just a reflector. The lower band is also a reflector. Some folks have put LEDs behind these strips and it looks great..

Richard: Looking at your pictures.. I'd be wanting to grind out all the fiberglass and fix it right.. I really like the plastifix (or plastex) Have done a bunch of repairs just recently.. With a little practice it's amazing what you can do with it..

OK guys chime in here please.. Is there a small ball bearing in there somewhere? or am I mixing this up with something else?

You have already done the hard part.. Getting them off the engine is easy.. Just two clamps.. and they will almost fall out. (actually two pipes but one unit)

Richard: You will have to remove the mufflers.. But if you loosen the clamps enough it should be no problem pulling them off. Basically they are slipons. There are two nuts on the bottom that are tucked up way out of sight that need to come off. These hold the collector to the frame. You may have to loosen the front pipes as well because I don't think there is enough room to pull the collector off the front pipes without dropping it a bit.. There are also two top pipes that need to be loosened to drop the collector off the rear pipes.. Sometimes these can be difficult. Wayne

Richard: If you are going to the Brantford Airport they have a kit of Plastifix. It's around $100 and is what I'm using. You can fix a lot of plastic with this kit and way cheaper than Plastex which I think is the same stuff. Anyhow pick one of those up and I'll be happy to show you how to use it.. GREAT stuff.. Wayne

Bring something you want to fix over.. should be easy as all the parts are off the bike

Ok I'm officially in Panic Mode now.. I got it back together. Before I put the plastic back on I started it and it ran GREAT. revved up to 7,000 without a problem seemed fine and strong so I put it all back together. Did an oil change etc. fixed my tabs and cracks and this morning took it for a test run.. Now I'm totally messed up. No tack. Running rough (like in 3 cylinders). No power at all. This is way worse than when I started. So my guess is the TCI is pooched. Please confirm??? Does the TCI send the signal to the Tack? I'm suppose to be going on a trip to the East Coast in a week so this puts me in PANIC MODE!! Ray I think I'll take you up on the TCI you have and see if that fixes it.. Thanks everyone for your input..

I fix my broken tabs with Plastex or Plastifix.. Bring it over and I'll show you..

Thanks guys: I have an update.. Dismantled the bike to get to the coils and TCI. Got another set of coils with lots less miles on them from a friends parts bike. Had a tough time getting them out of the rack they are on. Eventually they did come loose. His parts bike is an 83 so the TCI is no good to me. The rack on the 83 has all four coils on the same plane so that the two back ones are hard to get at the screws. the 84 has those back ones at a slight angle to the screws are easy to get to. Anyhow coils look good but I decided to have a look at my TCI while it was out. Good thing I did. First I could not figure out how to get the circuit board out. Eventually took it to another friend that is amazing with a soldering iron. He was able to take it apart without any damage and all 8 of the diodes were toast. So I ran down to the local electronics store and bought some diodes ($3.00 including tax) and he put in the new ones for me as well as putting the thing back together. Looks good now and I'm hoping this will solve my problem. Will be reassembling it tomorrow but while I was taking it apart found a couple of broken tabs on the fairing so have to fix that as well before I can test ride it... Should know by Saturday.. I'll keep ya'll posted on the outcome..

Just thought I'd pass along the symptoms and see what you guys think. I started a thread about coils but now I'm not as sure about it.. Started some time ago getting not so good mileage but thought it might just be the methanol in the gas around here.. Lately was running rough and missing so I changed the plugs. One of them had some carbon build up on it. After the change it ran better but about two tanks later started doing it again. When the tank was down to about two bars I put in a whole can of seafoam and ran it hard for 1/2 hour then parked it for 2 days. After that it ran better for a while but still not right. Before the Seafoam it would not go above 5500 rpm. Would just sort of flatten out at that. After the Seafoam it is now at 6000 rpm that it flattens out. Sometimes it gets jerky at that rpm like it's catching and not catching etc.. So I was thinking a bad coil but now not sure.. What does the gallery think?

Ok I am having a problem with my 84 and I'm starting to think I have a weak coil. Is there a way to test a coil? I'd like to know if I have a bad one and if the replacements I have are any good BEFORE I dig these out.. Looks to be a little complicated getting them out.

With my Garmin I really like Mapsource. It is being replaced with Basecamp but I still like Mapsource better. Might just be that I'm an old fart and don't like change. Anyhow once I got to know how to use it Mapsource plays nice with my GPS and I can create routes very easily. Uploads directly to the Zumo. Updated maps from Garmin can update the unit AND the program at the same time.

You are going to get various opinions on this one. I personally like them de-linked. Most of your stopping power is on the front wheel. Also if you watch a ride like a pro DvD the slow speed maneuvering is much more difficult with linked brakes. Skydoc17 has a kit which does this very nicely. You will get arguments for keeping them linked though. Either way replacing the lines with stainless is an amazing upgrade to your braking power. I highly recommend it. AND WELCOME TO THE SITE!!!!!
