  1. Thanks for another GREAT MD, even though I spent most of MY time in the garage working on my own bike, I still tried to help others. I want to also thank Muffin and Squid, Lowell, Earl (Skydoc17). Rick Butler (the rebuilt back-pad works great!), Marcarl (sorry I didn't get to meet Marca!) and all the others who helped me from time to time! Lets see---- Fuse block shot, stator gone (who knew Muffin carried a stator with him?), oil change Sunday morning, cab service by Squidley........... all in one weekend! And the highlight---- meeting Jonas and seeing how they do it across the pond! Bring on the "Black Death"!!! Dan

    Saw a guy pull up at the Advance Auto Parts in Oberlin yesterday morning on a mid-70's HD. you KNEW that guy knew how to work on his own bike. Then the pack of new bike riders pulled out of the Marathon. You know the guy I would talk to and would talk back with me! Dan

  4. DANG Bob! We just got home about 45 minutes ago and I just fired this thing up and yours was the first post! Glad you and Becky are alright, sorry to hear about that new steed. We stayed freeway the whole way to alleviate that situation. We thought about bringing 52 up from Cincinnati but just stayed on 74. Talk to ya later, gotta go get something to eat. Dan

  10. You want it to be a normally closed switch, so the contacts are made when you remove the magnet, and open when the magnet is attached. Run the + wire thru the switch, and they should work. No, you don't need that shim. Dan
  11. Got some pics there? Only 2 types of switches, Normally Open and Normally Closed. The description is of a switch in it's normal position with the contacts either open or closed. You need a Normally Closed momentary contact switch for the trunk lid. Sounds like you might have a maintained contact switch. Try pushing the button and hear if it clicks. If it does, it's probably maintained. Here's a pic of one like you need. Dan

  13. That looks like the same thing I have in my cabinet except I don't have the actuating solenoid and the electronics that control it. Some modifications need to be done to the bike in order for it to fit, it raises the carbs about an inch. My personal opinion, a little stout on the price, I paid a hundred bucks for mine, but then again, didn't get the other stuff with it. I'm just going to use a manual control Dan

  16. Only take one wrap around, try to get the ends as close together as possible. maybe just a tad bigger than the pipe, as the clamp will compress the copper as it tightens. The original gaskets are what we call "sacrificial", meaning they will decompose in the presence of the corrosive exhaust gasses over time. Mileage is a part of it, but so is age. Give it a try and see what happens. Dan

  18. These are just the diaphragms themselves, not the whole complete unit. Most of the time you can just replace the diaphragms unless the tubes themselves are damaged. Also while you have them out, do a search for the 5bikes mod, which involves removing the white plastic washer on the needle and replacing it with a couple SS washers to improve your gas mileage and running.   21. If you're coming across 70, we'll be leaving Indy around 10 or 11 on Friday morning, not sure if we're taking 36 across or going the freeway route yet. 6 or 7 hours by the way of 36, or 5 or 6 going freeway. Dan
  22. If you have a thinning gasket, wrap a piece of solid #14 copper wire around the pipe with the gasket. If it's shot, pull it off, make a new one out of solid #10 copper wire and re-install. Might have to snug them up a couple times, as the wire will soften and mold itself to the shape of the clamp after a few heat soak sessions. I've got a couple of new ones left from my rebuild, probably worth their weight in gold now, as I think I only paid about 10 bucks each for them. Dan

  24. Sounds to me like you might have a blockage in the coolant stream; or for some reason, the flow at higher rpms might be collapsing a hose. If it heats up that quickly, the coolant definately isn't flowing.
  25. Next time we get together, I'll have the wife turn around and take some pics of you guys as we're pulling away from ya!
