  5. That's the reason the wife and I aren't going on a charity ride for the local Community Health program this weekend. They are even touting it as a "Harley" ride. I'm just not sure what makes them think that they are better than the rest of us that choose to ride something different. It's the snobbery that really turns me off from most of these guys. The ones that are regular folk (and I know plenty of them) and ride HD can't even figure it out. Just my worth
  6. Can't tell him about you-know-who and you-know-who now, can we?!! (You know who I mean!) THAT'S PROBABLY WHAT SCREWED YOUR "DUTTER" UP IN THE FIRST PLACE!!!!! Wow, thought we was rid of dat guy for a bit, vacations over!
  7. Pull the left side cover off. Look at the rear of the #1 Carb (rear) where the cable hooks up. This is the "choke" cable (actually an enrichment circuit in the carbs, a "choke" is a plate situated over top of the throttle plate designed to increase vacuum in the carb throat and draw more gas in that way). Operate the "choke" lever and watch the action at the carb. The levers operate little "pop-out" buttons on each carb to open the enrichment circuit. After you identify the first button, then look at each carb to make sure they are going all the way back in. It might be possible the linkage is warped and not working properly, allowing one or more of the buttons to remain open.
  8. If the stator voltage reads fine, then cut out the connector(s), put shrink tube on each wire then solder them and shrink the tube over the solder joints. Eliminates the "burnt up" connector some have a problem with.
  9. Definately an 84, the trunk and paint job defines that. Must be a Royale because it doesn't have the pinstriping the red 84 standards had (at least mine does).

If it's only "leaking" with the engine running, then what is probably happening is you've got a float sticking open and the excess is running thru the overflow hose and exiting up behind the rear shock. That is the only place these 4 overflow hoses dump out. If it was the tank or a fitting, it would leak all the time. Try tapping on the bowls with a screwdriver while the bike is running, might dislodge the offending matter. Dan

  19. Pull the carbs and intake boots, turn the motor over till the T2 timing mark line is aligned in the timing window in the left cover. Look down into the intake hole for #2 (front left) and see the condition of your valves. Obviously they should be closed. You can also pull the front valve cam cover and see where the lobes are. It's probably what you are already thinking, that's how it usually goes. Good luck, Dan

  23. The middle gear output shaft removal is a fairly straight forward procedure. Remove the driveshaft and swingarm, remove the rubber boot and the side plate above the middle gear cover. Loosen the 2 engine case bolts at the output shaft, then remove the 3 bolts holding the output shaft. Watch how the shims come out from behind the flange, and replace them the same way. Of course, you have the mufflers, side covers, rear pegs and holders and shock link to disconnect/remove. That's the fun part. Be a good weekend job, could also grease up the shock link bushings while you're in there. Man, I could come up with a whole list!
  24. Usually doesn't hurt, plug it back in. The 83 was the only year they used the upper carb throat for the boost sensor, and the TCI has to match. I think your problems are in the carbs, tho. Good luck
