Is that a Tri-power air cleaner I see under that hood? Auto or manual tranny? Nice car, had a 67 Tempest that I played around with back in the day. Grandson is lucky to have you to raise him. Take him for a ride and ingrain that early American muscle into him.

Thanks Gary, great write-up for us techno dudes. I left it kinda basic for some of the not-so-tech guys, plus with a yard full of leaves that needed cleanin' up, mama was more insisting that I do that instead of this! -

I may be wrong, but I believe the motor runs counter-clockwise as viewed from the left, which puts the firing sequence BEFORE TDC, as is with most motors I know of (RE: Chevy small block, which is anywhere from 10d BTDC to 4d BTDC), therefore, as the piston reaches TDC, the explosion is then pushing down on the piston as it comes around, providing maximum force or torque to be applied. If you waited till after TDC, the piston is already traveling downward, which would be wasting some of that torque. I WAS wrong once before, tho........ -

I knew that Earl, which is why I stated the differences between the two in order for anybody to see and understand the difference. As I understood it, he did not know if the carbs were off the 83 or the 86. I can swap any 41r TCI into the 84 without any changes, you'd have to look specifically at the 83 wiring diagram to see if there are any differences in the wiring to an 84-89 TCI. Me -

Look at the #2 carb, if the vacuum line to the boost sensor comes from the intake boot, they are 84 and up carbs. If the vacuum line comes off of the upper throat (above the butterfly) of the carb, then they're 83 carbs. On the TCI, 26H is 83, 41R is 84 and up. -
Picked up my 84 in the fall of 06 (4 years now!) joined here in the spring of 07 (just before Flyinfool) after meeting Millman37 at the local cycle joint, I chased him down after seeing his bike outside and he told me about this looney bin! Been crazy ever since!

That just shows that he's REALLY feeling better now!

Congratulations Gary, let the spoiling begin!

Inside the left cover of the 1st gens is a sticker that reads "Regular leaded- Research 90 Octane" for fuel usage....... I'm just sayin' The only engines out there totally designed for ethanol are the Indy Racing League engines designed by Honda

You need to get the Warden to give you a shove-off on Brown Sugar or Ugly and get out for a ride, Dan. All this sitting around is NOT doing you any good! I've never had and never will get a flu shot. Kinda like going up to the baddest dude in the bar and kissing his girlfriend.......... Sure not gonna happen around here! I'll still get my one flu episode each fall, but i need to take a break every once in awhile!

Hey Lewis, sorry so long for the reply. Since you'll be getting gaskets anyway for the whole engine, your cost would be $280 complete. Just need to send me the old rotor with the starter clutch still on it, theres a thin washer between it and the rotor I have to have to re-install. You'll get the new clutch and a new 72 tooth gear back in a nice package for direct bolt-on when you're ready. If you want to do it, give me a couple of weeks notice so I can have the parts on hand. Is there interest in another VentureRider mug order?

That Kawi is the first bike I bought when I turned 18, kind of a stupid choice now that I've had some time to think about it......

Then it cain't be runnin' TOO awful bad (for a second gen anyway!)
-
Make sure you're not running too low an RPM in the upper gears, these motors don't like it too much with heavy throttle and high load below 3500. Good luck on the help for the synch, if'n I was closer I'd help you out. Order the Morgan Carbtune, the instructions are pretty easy to follow, but you'll need a REALLY long screwdriver to do the synch.
-
Lewis, if you're interested in fixing the starter clutch for the LAST time, PM me if you're interested in the mod. Squeeze developed it a couple of years ago, it handles everything up to a bored out 1600cc VMAX motor. I handle the mods for him here in the Americas. You can replace it with a new standard clutch, but it'll go bad in a few years at most and then you'll have to do it again. Dano

Pull your plugs and check them, you could be running on only 3 cylinders, especially if it won't go over 80-90 mph. How long has it been sitting? Run a couple of cans of Seafoam thru it over a couple of tanks of gas, that'll help clean the carbs out. Other thing to do is to start it up and immediately feel the exhaust pipes up where they exit the motor. A cold one will show you a dead cylinder. You should do this within the first 5 or 10 seconds, after that they'll get too hot to touch.

Venture stumbling in high gear

The 1st gen will run up to about 8200 quite easily, that's about the max for this spring/valve combination. Mine pulls steadily all the way up there. Wouldn't do it all the time, but it's fun every once in awhile! -
Nice go there Carl, thanks for that lesson in how to correctly build a lift. It'll save me a LOT of time and $$ if I put one up in the shed! I'm just glad Marca came out of this one without a scar!

Get with Pegscraper, as he has done the most to his RSTD to get her to get up and run. I believe the last thing he did was to swap out the tranny to a MKI unit.

Heck, put me down for a set for the 87, they'll probably be ready when I go to work on it again this winter....... If I don't get to it this year, at least they'll be there next year!!
