Are those billet aluminum heads on there? Bike looks great!!!! Dan

In the late 1970s and early 1980s -- the last time motorcycle fatalities were this high -- the hottest bikes included machines like Kawasaki Motors Corp.'s Z1000. A fearsome bike at the time, its 90-or-so horsepower and total weight approaching 600 pounds seem benign compared with the nearly 200 horsepower generated by the company's new ZX-14 or rival bike maker Suzuki Motor Corp.'s GSX-R1000. Hottest bike in the 70's???? Did they forget about the H2750 Kawasaki that would rip yer head off at just the hint of a throttle twist? That was the first bike I bought and I couldn't wait to get rid of it. If you rode it too easy, you'd foul plugs (2 stroke triple cylinder). Never had a KZ1000 that could keep up. Weighed less than the others, too. JMO Dan

Need a little guidance
Dano replied to cpudoc's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
I just put all the screws back in the holes they come out of so I don't have to remember! Sometimes it works, sometimes it don't! Dan -
HMMMM, guess I better think about that too, as I plan on checking mine while the engines out. Dan

Fix for broken tab on side panel
Dano replied to BJB's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
Gene, that's all that we're trying to do, too. Problem is, it's hard for a 2nd genner to get the upper hand on a first genner, cause it's hard for you to keep up with us!!!!!!!!!! Around here, you just gotta have a thick skin or lather up in oil to let it slide off of you! Only time I get offended is if somebody stiffs me for a job or a check bounces from one! It's all in good fun!! Dan -
I agree with GeorgeS. Being an electrician for my whole adult life and part of my pre-adult life, I should be filled with cancer by now. Maybe by shocking myself every once in a while (when I don't have the money for that extra cup of coffee and I'm tired), I've saved myself from doom and gloom! Maybe I can market that! New "Cancer-Blaster"-- a shock a day keeps the cancer away!!! That guys more screwy than I am, and I've been practicing!!!:rotf::rotf: Dan

Second gear \ install issue
Dano replied to Marcarl's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
Hey Marlcarl, let me know what you did wrong so I can do it, too!!!! Seriously, let us know so when I put mine back together hopefully I don't do it, too. Good luck, it's probably something simple, as we all tend to do sometimes!! Good luck!! Dan -
Papa, if you can change oil in your mower, then most of this is not above you. A decent mechanical instinct, 10,000 people on here willing to help you, about 150 square feet (my area in the office is 12 x 12), and a place to clean dirty stuff is all thats needed. AND SOME BIG BRASS B***S TO HAVE THE NERVE TO JUMP IN!!!! To me, rebuilding it myself is the only reassurance that my bike is ready to go at anytime and not have to worry about anything. Give it a try sometime!! Dan

We've got one in Shelbyville, In. He's had it for a couple of years. Dan

This project is small, compared to the 65 Corvair sitting in the driveway waiting for the same, except I have 3 motors to work on for it! Not scared to tackle this, it's more like therapy or relaxation for me. Most of it is just cleaning and painting. The driveshaft actually still had some grease on it at the u-joint end! As Randy suggested, with the v-boost kit I plan to put on, I will be installing the 3/8" strut rods for bracing in the center stand area. Also rebuilding the front end with new progressive springs and seals, probably replace the headstock bearings, etc. I may not get on the road till late April, but I'm in this bike for the long haul. Squeeze- will be inspecting those dogs closely, and will undercut if it even looks like it needs it. No sense to have to do it twice! Thanks guys, Dan

Well, after an evening last night of prepping the office/ new work space, put the bike in there last night for the motor removal. Had to do some errands and work today, so about 4:30ish I got the final start on the engine removal. This was after an hours conversation with RandyA (Thanks Randy!) on the depth and scope of my problem and with great words of encouragement. To make a short project long, I went ahead and decided to remove the rear subframe and parts. I had long ago decided, and finally made the move, to strip and clean the bike. I mean, what the heck, whats another month in this process. Also, I believe the first time I meet you guys face-to-face, with a clean and painted engine, and a filthy and scratched frame and no maintenance done to it, I figured I'd be in TROUBLE!!!!! So like Dad taught me, if you're gonna do a job for yourself, do it all the way, do it right, and take three times as much as it should to get it done! Well, to make a brief history of it, here's Randy's diagnosis with just a conversation. I tend to agree with him. With it kicking out of 2nd only at high torque (WOT 1 up, riding 2 up, mid to 3/4 throttle), he has suggested that it may only be the thrust washer that is worn and may not be any damage to the gears themselves. It is my sincere hope that he is correct, so that more energies (and Money) can go towards other areas of the bike. For my initial investment of 600 bucks for the bike, and the money I've spent so far, I'll end up with about 1500 in her, with everything but a paint job done. I don't believe that's too bad a deal. But, I emphasize, it is not done without the considerable help and time of people from this site that has made it possible. That part is incalculable. But the time I spend working on my bike will only help me understand the finer workings and be able to reciprocate my knowledge to those others that may need it. Well, here are a couple pics from the glorious moment: The young man is my son, Nic

Might as well check mine while I have the motor out for the 2nd gear issue! Just something else to do! Dan

Thanks, but I've got one coming. Appreciate you asking, though. Dan

Hey Randya.....dumb Question!!!!!!
Dano replied to dwichert's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
Hey Randy & Fixit, I read ya'lls post from last year on the fix, you were gonna go in cahoots on the gear fix as far as rebuilding. Had any takers? I can tear it down and put'er back together, but not able to do the gear cut. Would be willing to contribute to your bike fund if you're willing to do it for me! Would also save me some much needed funds for other repairs! Gonna try to do the vboost addition, as Buddy is selling me the one he got from toolman. Every dollar counts! Let me know, Dan -
After finally getting back into ripping the bike apart for the 2nd gear fix, I found the previous owner removed the battery vent hose. As you can tell from the pics, I've got some paint to redo, but the biggest thing is I now need a new battery box bracket. This goes across the frame and the box sits on it. Also looking for some cleaner front pipes as these are pretty well shot, unless someone can give me an idea as to how to clean them up. Going to be a long process, as I wasn't expecting this much to do, but it's apart, and might as well get done. Also found acid corrosion on the box terminals and just about everywhere else. Gonna put new valve cover gaskets on, too! Top and front of the motor looks NASTY!!! Oh well, back to work!!!

I too do a lot of side work (electrical), and I've only had 1 customer stiff me. Same deal, had to move a tan salon in a weekend, but my bill was 3750, which she knew up front. Got all but 850 of it. It's been 4 months since she gave me anything, middle of winter, know she's making money. Going to small claims next. DOn't work for free except for my wife!!!! That's my bike money!!!!! Dan

These suits actually made their first appearance in Lara Croft/Tomb Raider movie a few years ago. Might be as much fun as riding a 1st gen!!!! LOL Dan

Just remember to pull over when you see a 1st gen in your rear view! It'll save you the anguish of trying to keep up with him!!!! (or her!!) LOL Dan

yep, just figur. Brady could have gone down in history with a 19-0 record, 4 superbowl trophys, a big bonus next year. THAT"S WHY WE WATCH!!!! (At least till half-time if it's a blowout):whistling: Dan -
Yes, I would like to make the Vogel run this year, we're planning on going to Don's maintenance day (I am, anyway), and I may have some cousins going down to Vogel. Will definately be watching for your posts on the f-glass repair and paint, not scared to try it, it can always be sanded off and done again. Got a sprayer and compressor, can seal off part of my office for paint booth (better than the house, I guess!!). Probably do that next year as 2nd gear repairs and mechanical go-thru is first this year. Once again, thanks for your input, Dan PS Reading the number of views, this has turned out to be a pretty popular thread due to your insights on humanity!!

Best game I've seen in years, went down to the last second (or2!!!!). You could tell Peyton was wanting to get into this game just by looking at him in the box. His brother was definately the MVP of this game!! Wish they all could be this way. Commercials sucked, though, seen better. Dan

Hmm, everybody checking posts at half-time, huh?! Dan

I've got the garden hose in the house thawing out right now, just spent 9 months and 20 grand remodeling the kitchen. Already have enough problems in the other areas of marriage without trying that one! Sorry to hear about the marriage, I get that "lack of judgement" thing too, only I keep thinking it's a "point-of-view" type situation. We should learn that whenever we try to do something we think is smart, they will do something uncharictaristic of their usual habits and we will suffer because of it!! I appreciate the input, however, and hopefully will think before trying something like that! It's easier to clean up a mess in the garage ('cause that's my domain) than to excuse my way out of tearing up "her" house! (Even though I make the payments!) Can't wait to meet and see this bike sometime this summer if our paths cross. I'm not good with paint, but I want to try to make the motor look better. Thanks again for the "soul cleansing" and the pointers. Dan
