Guess I'm right behind ya, huh?!

As I told you when we first met Saturday, even though I've just rebuilt my bike from head to toe, I've only got a fraction of the knowledge that you have. Every time I go to answer a question posed by the board, I first stop and think...."Will Muffin correct me 'cause I forgot that this other thing has something to do with it too?". I mean that in the most positive way. It serves to sharpen my knowledge of these fine machines. I am also grateful for the test ride. That gave me the untold confidence that I did a pretty good job. Out of all of us here, you deserve that ride the most. I know that as I do, most of us on here would have loved to actually help Squidley in working on this for you. Have fun and enjoy, Dan

I talked personally with my tire dealer tonite about the Metzlers. He has dealt with them since 1977(one of the top ten dealers worldwide). Out of all the failures he has seen, 3 were due to actual tire failure, the rest were due to underinflation. YOU MUST GO BY THE PRESSURE STATED ON THE SIDEWALL OF THE TIRE, NOT THE BOOK OR STICKER ON THE BIKE. He said that it can be no more or less than 10% of the psi stated (usually 50 psi for max load) no matter the load carried on the bike. This would be no less than 45 psi on the rear tire. Mothers friend stated that there was 42 psi in the tire. Not grossly underinflated, but probably enough to cause the tire to de-laminate in the plys. The tires are "cooked" under pressure (all tires, not just the Metzelers) at 435d F. If the tire is underinflated with a load on it, temperatures could easily reach that high and the "glue" used to hold the plys together will start to activate again and allow the plys to separate. Then air will start to migrate into this area, hence the "bulge" and subsequent de-lamination of the tire. I am not making any statements for or against here, but more of a "check your tires pressure rating on the sidewall and adjust accordingly" information type of thing. He has seen this happen with Dunlops, Pirellis and just about any brand of tire. I'm sure that our resident tire guys will chime in on this subject, also. Dan

If you're pulling those links out, check the bushings and collars. Mine were so bad I replaced them and added zerk fittings. I will post pics tonite when I get home on the zerk locations. You can pick them up at Autozone for a couple bucs, and get an 1/8" drill bit for the tap size. Now the bushings can be expensive, but mine had a LOT of slop in them, so I elected to replace them. Your choice. Dan

Finally quit raining around here for a couple days. Houses down south are having anywhere from a foot to 6' of water in them. We have passed the 100 year flood stage by about 3' down South of Indianapolis. Columbus Hospital has basement and 1st floor flooded out. The entire town of Spencer is under water. Who needs water????? Come get it!!! Of course, that's after the tornadoes we had come through here last week. Dan

Ummm, I put mine in the bags that came with the helmets............. Dan

Side stand question....
Dano replied to Skid's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
I like it!!!!! Dan -
I agree. We followed 5 or 6 Hardleys for about 15 minutes on the way back from Dons, were about 25 feet behind them. THE NAVIGATOR told me to get around them, couldn't stand it anymore!!!!! Only took a quick turn of the right wrist in 5th to go,,,,,, ahhhhhh, quiet again!!! Dan

The only one that had to get a rolling start was Stardbog, once in the morning at the hotel (I asked if he wanted me to pull my 1st gen over to jump him!), and then again at Dons!!!!!!!! Come on Brad, you gotta do better than that!!!!! :stirthepot: :stirthepot: Dan

HMMMMMM, if I remember correctly, I only needed to tighten my head bearings (and my neck, too!). There were so many 2nd gens littering the garage all day, you couldn't get through the garage to eat!!! Even had to push them out of the way so Muffin could get his new bike out!!!!! :stirthepot: :stirthepot: Dan

Oil change question
Dano replied to Locomotive's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
When I took my motor out and removed the bottom, There was still a good 1/2 quart of oil in the motor. There are so many nooks and crannys for it to sit in you will NEVER get it all out unless you tear it completely down. Believe me I know!!!! Dan -
I feel your pain, Frog. Several towns we went through on the way to and from Dons house were like that. But we made up for that in between!!!! Oh, by the way, it's fun being behind a group of about 15 Hardly riders doin' 55 down an empty stretch of road, and the NAVIGATOR tells ya' she's tired of listening to them!!!! Gave me free reign to try out a full throttle twist in 5th gear at 3500 rpm, passed all of 'em and continued our trip in the quietness of an afternoon breeze!! (He**, we only reached 85 by the time we got to the leader!!) Dan

Being this was my first M-Day and my first time meeting face-to-face a lot of you GREAT folks, I just wanted to take a moment and send out a huge thanks to Don, Eileen and Dylan not only for putting up with us and sharing their home, but making us feel at ease about being there AND making my wife (Rose) feel as if she belonged, also. Her only hearing me talk about the antics here online probably made her think I was ready for the loony bin. Now she knows that WE ALL qualify for it! We missed the second calling of the pond monster and his "mate"s appearance, but I am truly humbled by the help that was offered on the small things I had to adjust on my bike. For me, having our "Traveling Ambassador" Lowell AND Marlcarl help me adjust my headstock bearings, and having the distinct pleasure of the one and only Muffin take my bike for a ride and give me a report on my hard work and the couple of things I need to pay attention to will be the highlight of the trip!!!! I did not get to say goodbye to a number of you, the wife wanted to go to Norwalk and watch them taping the "Pinks All Out" drag race show that evening (gotta take care of the Navigator, too!) but please accept my gratefull thanks now. We look forward to "the next time", and hope to see a number of you in Brown County on June 26th or July 28th for a good ride!! Dan & Rose
