  1. Rent a U-Haul or borrow a buddy's.
  2. Having previously owned a Roadstar and currently owning a Venture, I can tell you the differences. The Roadstar has GOBS of low end bottom torque. The Venture does not. The Roadstar shakes and vibrates at all RPM's. The Venture does not. The Roadstar revs up early and lacks top end power. The Venture does not. The Venture likes to rev up. You almost need to run it up to the rev limiter to get the potential out of this engine. It's great on top end power. The Roadstar is around 60hp with 99lb/ft of torque, the Venture has 98hp and around 89lb/ft of torque. The torque is close on both machines, but the Roadstar will have almost all of it off idle, whereas the Venture will have to be wound up a bit. I liked the Roadstar, put 40,000 miles on it in 3 years. It wasn't very comfortable riding 2-up for long distances. Solo it was fine for me. Ive put about 15,000 miles on my Venture since June last year. The fairing is good wind protection and the passenger area is the best of all motorcycles. My 2nd broken belt was the determining factor for getting rid of the Roadstar. The shaft drive of the Venture will most likely never give me any grief.
  3. Yep. Yamaha changed the filter design. If it's the cartridge type filter, it will be on the front of the engine under and aluminum cover held down with a 10 or 12 millimeter bolt. I'm sure that 84 used a cartridge filter and not a screw on. yep. a little research shows me that the 83, 84, and 85 uses the CH6002. You can find it any almost any parts house or wal-mart.
  4. Im assuming that your oil filter is a cartridge type filter and not a spin-on filter. If it is the cartridge type, then the fram ch6002 is fine. I used the same filter in my XJ1100. I personally use 15w40 Diesel oil in bikes now. It's works fine, is cheap, and can be found anywhere. Right now I have Chevron Delo 400 15w40 in it. This weekend I'll be changing the oil and will be using John Deere Plus 50 15W40. (cause I can get it from work for FREE!!)
  5. Because Yamaha changed the numbering system. It changes every year. I usually don't even pay attention to the first 3 numbers. I don't use Yamaha filters anyways. They're cheap, not as cheap as a Fram PH6017a though. I use a Purolater PL14610. It the most goodest filter out there according to a couple of sites.
  6. It's not a Mustang... It's a Custom World International backrest. http://www.phatperformanceparts.com/ProductDetails.asp?ProductCode=CWI%2D04%2D167
  7. I replaced mine with an amber 1157 bulb. The bulb seems to be brighter, plus the amber light through the red lens is an oddball color that grabs attention.
  8. Instead of monkey butt or Gold Bond, I use Johnston's Cornstarch Baby Powder, not the standard stuff. http://walgreens.hs.llnwd.net/e1/dbimagecache/384725.jpg

    Wet Feet

Why don't you build a bridge across it?
  10. changing the spark plugs will not increase your horsepower. just use the standard NGK plug and all will be fine. Ive seen photos of the Iridiums melting the tips out of em on another Yamaha forum.
  11. White bottle is conventional 15W40 oil. Blue bottle is synthetic 5W40 oil. Either one is good.
  12. Really? You need to ride more. First 2 months I had my bike, I changed oil 3 times. 1. as soon as I brought it home from the dealer, I bought it used. 2. 3 weeks-3000 miles later 3. 8 weeks-another 3000 miles later
  13. you sure can.
  14. us FLB's gotta look out for each other!!!
  15. I bet it's that new fancy tire on the back end of your bike and since you've changed your oil, you were paying attention to the backend and noticed the noise.
  16. If it had happened in Texas, he wouldn't have been lying.
  17. Well, in that case, I would contact Diamond R Accessories and see if they can fab ya one up. http://www.diamondraccessories.com/indexpage.php BUT.... Utopia does list it on his site... http://www.utpr.com/rsv.html http://www.utpr.com/rsvstitch.jpg
  18. I'm assuming you mean the passenger backrest and not a driver backrest. That's gonna be tough to find.
  19. With the sidecar, I see no problem with a running a rear tire up front. Supposedly, rear tires are harder then front tires. The front tires are softer for better turning. I don't believe it. Also, you NEED to run a car tire on the back of your bike with your sidecar.
  20. I wouldn't put 404's on a wheelbarrow personally. I had a set on my Roadstar and the rear was gone in 5000 miles and the front was gone in 8000 miles. I don't know how you can where out a front tire in such little time on a cruiser. It was worn out across the entire tread pattern as well. I didn't like em. The grip felt funny. Wet traction sucked. Your experience may vary.
  21. but, but, but, TECHNOLOGY!!! Why ride around on proven and reliable technology when there's electronics out there that can fail with no warning and costs hundreds of dollars to fix and can only be repaired by a "certified" dealer with the proper diagnostic equipment...
  22. I actually prefer it that way. I know that I'll be able to find parts off 10 years of bikes and everyone of them will be interchangable, which makes the Venture a very likely candidate for a lifelong bike. I don't buy new bikes. It's a waste of money. I buy good used bikes that I can get parts for. I made the mistake once of buying a XJ1100 Yamaha. It was only made one year and many of the parts were for that one year. I lost a CDI box. Took me 4 months to find a used one under 400 dollars. All the new technology that everyone wants on the bike costs extra money as well and it's more crap that goes bad in 10-15 years that costs more then what the bike is worth when it breaks.
  23. I too have a Diamond R backrest. I did not wish to wait for Utopia to manufacture one and Diamond R had them in stock.
  24. Are you wanting one that plugs into a 12 volt cig lighter or one with it's own battery power? The 12 volt ones are a dime a dozen at any wal mart, k mart, target, autozone, advanved auto, oreily's auto, pep boys.....blah blah blah.... self powered ones are not as common and the only one I can think of off the top of my head is Craftsman, but then you have to carry a charged battery with you all the time. I personally have a Slime compressor from AutoZone. 20 bux. self-contained, even has a cool little, accurate built gauge and a L.E.D. light fer night time use. I plug it into the 12 volt outlet in the fairing. BTW...I changed out my fuse from a 5 amp to a 10 amp but don't tell anybody. If you do, my bike will spontaneously burst into a fireball. http://s7.sears.com/is/image/Sears/00911586000?qlt=90,0&resMode=sharp&op_usm=0.9,0.5,0,0http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/412RV13odQL._SS400_.jpg
  25. Have you tried tightening the valve cover bolts yourself yet?
