  1. Don described it pretty good. The carb covers also use a tubed spacer where the diaphragm cover screws go thru. Jonas your idea sounds pretty good to but to mount it you'll definitely need to fabricate some brackets and then mount your cover to them. Larry
  2. Good Luck Annie. Hope the Doc's make it right for ya. Sure wouldn't want something happen to make you cancell your trip here next summer Larry
  3. Got a new kit in my ride as well. Haven't ridden the bike yet but know it'll be up to the task anyhow. Larry
  4. Did both before I did the switch bypass. I have a switch box mounted on top of the clutch resevoir that I use to turn on low beam, driving lights or a pair of day runner lights. So those lights are always off prior to starting the bike. High beam and running lights are unaffected doing this too. Larry
  5. It's 11" deep and 20" long (wide)
  6. No problem. Your order was sent out Monday. You'll most likely get it tomorrow or Thursday. On the healing part I am doing much better but not totally healded up yet. This old body sure is taking it's sweet time getting there too. Another 6-8 weeks left of winter so hoping by then I can lead a normal life again. And ride too. Larry
  7. I just put on a OEM Yamaha luggage rack today. It was taken off of my wrecked 05 so I didn't have a template to go by. No biggie there thou cause as a previous posted said cover the trunk with some wide masking tape. I took a long flexible ruler and drew a penciled line from the center of the lock up to the embossed logo on the trunks backrest. With a helper to hold the rack in position I put it where I wanted it keeping the rack centered. Then used a pencil to draw around the racks legs. Drilled a small starter hole in the center of each circle, then a large enough drill to get the spacers and bolts thu. Once the holes were drilled, I pull off the tape then I started the bolts with a couple of threads to get the rack mounted. I found only one bolt hole slightly off so had to slightly elongated that one. Snugged the bolts up a little at a time till they were all tight. Guess I should of done a "how to" but didn't think of it at the time. Larry
  8. Nope not me . I only asked if you were buying into the HD lifestyle. I just got a smile so I asked, even a little and that brought a laugh. Nope Eddie going by your standards I doubt you're over doing it . Heck you may even be a bit over whelmed what with all the choices you can make at the HD dealerships. Hoping we'll share some road time next summer Larry
  9. Awesome going mike. It's good to see he has prevailed and is making his goals. Hard work deserves a well paid job so wishing him the best there too. Larry
  10. February 1st -3rd
  11. Today I wrote up up a "how to" to do the ignition switch bypss. I see now it's been moved to the read only section of 2nd gen tech library. http://www.venturerider.org/forum/showthread.php?t=75398 Larry
  12. Goes to show ya Dave you need to hang out around here more. Larry
  13. There's been several times members here have by passed their ignition switch due to either switch failures or as a preventive to ward off failures. Today I decided to also do that to my bike and at the same time do a write up on it per a recent posting on this topic. For those who wonder why this is needed or desired the ignition switch has the majority of the power going thru one wire to feed lights and ignition requirements. Needless to say the switches contacts take a beating over time caused by overheating & normal wear & tear. The accessory part of the switch seems to never have this type of failure so this does lend credence to overloading on the one line being feed. By adding in a common 30 amp auto relay to that part of the circuit we can take the majority of the power off the switch before it gets there and route it directly to the line the switch powers, thus saving the switch. You'll need a couple of short 14 gauge wires, push on terminals, shrink wrap, and a 30 amp auto relay to do the job plus a soldering gun and wire stripper. To start you need to remove the drivers seat and gas tank. The gas tank is held on with a single bolt on the end by the seat plus two allen head bolts on the sides up front. Remove the cover by the ignition/gas cap. Disconnect the overflow vent hose and the fuel sender wires. The tank can be lifted off and set down out of the way now. Disconnect the (-) negative cable from the battery as you'll have one wire live otherwise. On top of the engine locate the wire harness coming from the ignition switch. There will be two red plug connectors going through a holder. Pull those out. The one you'll be working on will be the 2 wire one with a pink plug on one end disconnect that plug. Picture 1 shows it well. The next step is to splice a wire to the red wire with 14 gauge leaving it long enough to work with. Refer to picture 2 Cut the brown /blue wire leaving enough at the plug side to work with. Add a short length to both ends of the cut wire. Using a butt connector, soldered, and covered with shrink tubing will give a solid connection as well as protection . Add a female spade terminal to both of those ends. Do the same for the red wire spliced earlier too. Cover with shrink tubing after soldering them. Make a ground wire with a eyelet end on one end and a female terminal on the other. See picture 3. I used the closest bolt holding the radiator fill cap in place to ground the eyelet. The opposite end will attach to the relay. Connect the wires to the relay follows: spliced Red wire fastens to #30 terminal of the relay the brown /blue wire from the switch attaches to #86 terminal on the relay the brown /blue wire going to the harness connects to#87 terminal on the relay the gounding wire attaches to the #85 terminal on the relay. Wrap the wires up with tape and tuck them back into the harness holder. Pics 4 & 5 show the completed job with the relay as tucked in on top of the engine. Note: While this mod will prolong the life of the switch a long time there's always the posibilty that the switch can still fail through normal wear. If it does you can simply connect together the red wire and the brown/blue wire on the harness side to get you home. Some folks take this a step further and add a toggle switch between the two wires. I don't think it's neccassary on newer bikes but if you're experincing any ignition troubles now then I would certainly see the advatage of adding a toggle switch where you can get to it without having to remove the tank.
  14. Now we know what Eck is all about. Larry
  15. Oh now I remember what I forgot to bring with me to the meet. Have a pair of post cards for freebie calendars I was going to give away as we'll be out of town that weekend so can't attend the show this year. Anyone wanting em let me know . I'll drop em in the mail fo you. Larry
  16. Considering you already have a "T" you should be able to run the engine off the auxiliary tank provided there's a way to keep fuel from flowing out the main tanks inlet hose. With the auxiliary tank set up I use for the trikes all I have to do is filp a switch turning on the auxiliary tank and blocking the main fuel line in the process. Need more details just ask. Larry
  17. Well it is hard to be two places at once so at least you had a decent dinner. Hope whomever lost their passport finds it as they'll need it before too long. Larry
  18. Well we had a great turn out tonight with a head count of 37 members with wives and family included. Thanks to all who was able to come out for the evenings gathering. I would dare say there was a good even mix of 1st & 2nd gen members here tonight too along with 3 new members attending their first VR event. Hope Omer, Bill, and Luke enjoyed our company as much as we theirs. Looking forward to seeing you guys again during the riding season. Visiters from Canada were John & Diane, Brad T & Rhonda, Swifty (Dave), & lastly Bill & wife. Coming across State lines were Gil & Steve with their wives. (sorry having a senior moment here I forget your names). And no less than the other Michigan riders from near & far. Did I get the names right? Hope so. Hope all have a safe trip home too. Larry
  19. You'll be missed. Larry
  20. I'm going to put a relay sytem on my "new to me" 09 soon and will try to do a complete write up with "pics". Probably with in a couple of days. Stay tuned. Larry
  21. Fuel filter getting clogged up? You can get replacements at auto parts stores cheap. Some where on this site you'll find info on part numbers. Probably in the 2nd gen tech section. Larry
  22. Happy anniversary. It's not often we see folks together this long anymore. Well done to the both of you cause I know it's not an easy task. Larry
  23. Wow getting quite a big head count here. It's going to be good to see everyone again and meet a couple of new members here. It really has been a while since seeing a few of the folks coming too. You were missed last summer for sure. Larry
  24. The stabilizer I used simply fastened to the existing wires of the flasher unit under the right side cover. Very simple operation. Larry
  25. Just one of the reasons I'm having them trike out my 09 next month. Really looking forward to the completed package . Larry
