I've been following this saga as well Randy and am happy that the outcome is going to be in your favor. Looking forward to seeing you get that sweet looking ride back up to where it was last year when I first saw it. Good luck Larry

I'll 2nd Brad here. My very 1st bike accident happened as a teenager. broadsided a car that ran a stop sign at 40mph. No helmets for me or my younger brother who was a passenger. We we lucky that day. I rolled over the car hood and other than bruises was fine. Brother had a broken ankle and mild concussion. Since that fatefull I have always worn a good quality helmet. As others here have said it's saved at least my noggin several times after going down over the years. Now if I would ever wear all the gear all the time I'd be better protected. But the mind don't like the body overheated so off come the layered clothes. Larry

Old thread on crash bar brackets
Carbon_One replied to Moakster's topic in Royal Star Venture Tech Talk ('99 - '13)
Here ya go Moakster http://www.venturerider.org/forum/showthread.php?t=6069 I made another set using round solid rod with flat stock welded on ends. Stronger than using flat stock for the entire length. Larry -
90 degree valve stem...
Carbon_One replied to bugfish69's topic in Royal Star Venture Tech Talk ('99 - '13)
The problem with most 90* bent stems is getting enough clearance to screw them on. Not much room there as noted. One could rebend a 90* stem to about 45* and that should work pretty good I think or simply just add an extender stem. Larry- 5 replies

trailer hitches&noise ?
Carbon_One replied to a topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
Also check the saddle bags and the hinges for the lids as they're know to work loose as well. Maybe check the trunk mounting screws while your at it. Look under the inner trunk pad for the screws. Larry -
Kenny what accommodations have you made regarding getting from the airport to Squid's place? I'm just 3 miles from the airport so could pick ya up easily enough. Even take you to Brad & Lonna's too. Pm me with you're arrival info and we'll take it from there. Larry

Chuck I'm glad to hear that your tire problem was at home and not on the road. Can't add any more than what others here did so I'll just add that you can count your blessings instead of your money. Take care Larry

Any Ideas? Key/Ignition swith Problem?
Carbon_One replied to RoadKill's topic in Royal Star Venture Tech Talk ('99 - '13)
You're right Red as now that I think of it my ignition problem was more of a sticking situation than anything else. All of my electrical stuff worked fine at the time. As to using relays for accessory lighting & etc I do believe in that as it will help prevent additional loads on the ignition switch. I even went so far as to install a relay with a separate switch for the low beam headlight. I turn it on after starting the bike and off before shutting the bike down along with spot lights (which are on a separate circuit). I always use the kill switch to shut down the engine as well or side stand before I converted to a trike. May be over kill on my part doing it this way but gives me more peace of mind knowing I'm doing whatever I can to prolong switch & battery life. Larry -
Sorry to hear of this Boss. Who knows what motivates someone to do this stuff. Jealousy, revenge, or just plain idiots. Within a month of owning my new Kia it too received a keyed scratch about half the length of the car. And this happened in front of the sons house just after dark. Sure does tick ya off. And of course no one saw anything either. As to your bike before going with the leather tops why not try doing a paint match thru a reputable bodyshop. When I had my trike body painted they tried first matching the bikes paint localy. No go there so they they ordered paint thru Color-Rite. This then came out as a pefect match. Larry

All good info here. One other thing to keep in mind is the wheel size of the trailer. An 8" wheel will be running higher revolutions per mile as opposed to a 12" wheel so will generate more heat. Bearings can also fail by being over greased. What happens is the repeated greasing pushes out the seal(s) which then allows dirt and containments to get in as well as letting grease escape when heated up from a long run. Bottom line is it's never a bad idea to at least do a precheck prior to any trip. Larry

Any Ideas? Key/Ignition swith Problem?
Carbon_One replied to RoadKill's topic in Royal Star Venture Tech Talk ('99 - '13)
Sounds to me like you're experiencing beginning switch problems. I'd try lubing the switch 1st with an electrical contact cleaner/lubricator. Just spry the stuff into the keyhole and then work the switch on & off with the key in place a few times. I had a similar situation on my bike about a year & half ago. Hasn't recured since. Larry -
Lots of great choices already spoken of. I like the idea of the Black hills area, Col again or Four Corners area as Eck suggested. My reasons for those areas are cooler temps, awesome scenery & roads. I do love the Golden Triangle area suggested by someone too. But it can get mighty hot as well. I suppose the deciding factor will be whomever will decide to do the lions share of setting up and organizing the rally itself. Lots of work there but doable when many hands are helping. Anytime in the summer months should be the date as those who have kids at home won't be free to go till after Memorial Day and before Labor Day. Larry

Preliminary Report on Pirelli MT66 ROUTE tires
Carbon_One replied to V7Goose's topic in General Tech Talk
Hmm you may be right there Jeremy I looked thru a BFG site once and didn't see anything. Must of overlooked them. I'll check again. Thanks for the heads up Larry -
Sweet bike Brad & Lonna. Saw one up close while at local Yamaha dealer near Skid's. love that shade of gray. Larry

Preliminary Report on Pirelli MT66 ROUTE tires
Carbon_One replied to V7Goose's topic in General Tech Talk
Thanks Rick. I'll check into that a bit more. My initial seaches didn't turn up any car tires in the 150/?-16's. It's the width of the front rim that seems to be the odd ball for a car tire. And the 16" diameter don't help either. My rear tires are B.F. Goodrich G-Force Sports 215/55R-16's. They're a directional thread patterened tire and seem to be great so far. Good traction wet or dry. Larry -
Preliminary Report on Pirelli MT66 ROUTE tires
Carbon_One replied to V7Goose's topic in General Tech Talk
Thanks for the imput Goose. Valid points there as you so well put it. My bike came with the Dunlop 404's so I have no personal experince with the "Brickstones". I'm also wanting to be sure whatever tire I use has decent water handling capabilities. I have no complaints with the Avon MT 90 I'm running now with about 12 k on them thou it is showing some wear. 10 k was on two wheels thou. Going and coming home from Skids rally I hit several T-storms and wet riding conditions. The bike felt as solid as a car in the rain with no apparent hydro-planing felt. Larry -
Wish I could of been there this year as well. It just wasn't happening thou. Knowing some of the folks who were behind this event I know it was one grand time for those who were able to make it. I guess I'll have to live it thru whatever pics are posted. Larry

Preliminary Report on Pirelli MT66 ROUTE tires
Carbon_One replied to V7Goose's topic in General Tech Talk
Thanks for the updated reports on the Pirelli RT 66 tire. I'll be needing to replace the front tire on my bike before long and have been researching tires. Current tire is the MT90 Avon but I'm now thinking I'll go back to the 150 size since the trikes rear is now higher than the stock set up was. Need the larger tire to bring the bike back to a more level stance. Also considering that the bike weighs more now, it's interesting to see that the Avon tire has a greater load rating too. So while you might save a few bucks and only getting average tire life I think I'll be sticking with Avon's again. Current front tire now has about 12k on it and is starting to show cupping on the sides a bit. It also looks like there still may be another 5-6k left to the wear lines. Another thought here that applies in my case is other trikers have used a rear tire up front for added wear longevity. Some even go so far as to reverse the tire and run them backwards, citing directional wear with no ill effects to handling or water planing. Larry -
Congrads on your new ride Ken. Welcome to the 3rd wheel world from one brother to another. Yes it'll feel different front two wheels for a while but it also won't take long to become aquainted with the handling either. As with any bike there will be pros & cons. From a safety point of view you will have more pros than cons now. Hope to meet you someday as well. Larry

Nice bike ya got there Albino Rhino. Welcome from another brother of the 3rd wheel. You'll find that the steering is totaly different from conventional counter steerin as on two wheels but nothing that can't be learned. Or become accustomed to. Give it some time and miles under your belt to gain full confindence in your ride. Larry Hey Don you can take mine for a spin if you make it to Floyd's Maintainece Day & BBQ.

Since converting the bike into a trike I've set the speedometer dead on with my gps unit. At this setting my odometer appears to read 1/10 per mile less than actual milage according to the gps now. I checked it going and coming back from Skid's Rally with this the last outcome. I tried setting it a couple times to read correct odometer readings and finally gave up on it. Close enough for me now. Larry

My trailer has the TorFlex axle as well. Smooth as silk and don't know it's back there half the time. Never balanced the tires either but did add a half bottle of Ride-On tire sealant to each tire. Auto formula. Which is supposed to self balance the tires. Hope you find the cause of that shimmy & fixed thou. Larry
-
I'd say have the tires balanced and go from there. Can't see any reason the axle would be causing a shimmy, unless the wheels alignment is off. Larry

Sorry to hear this latest set back JT. Will continue support for both of you in dealing with this continuing problem. May the Lord see fit to see Jeanie through all of this and for you to be strong for her as well. Larry
