Wasn't slamming the RM as much as it was to point out the need to make sure you have a complete picture of what you desire to do about your estate. Mom, did take the required counciling time and also made it a point to have my brother and I attend with her. Where she made her mistake was in not doing her "homework", the required time paints a very accurate "picture" of the reverse mortage but does not stress the importance of doing before hand the things to have your wishes carried out by your loved ones IF you get unable to conduct your own affairs. So while my post does slam the RM (for me it is not a good choice) my real reason for the response was to encourage you to take a few moments with your attorney and do some "what if" planning. Like I said the additional money each month for Mom was a real blessing for her, the hassle of dealing with "half a plan" is my real problem, the RM counciling does not go into the "what if" situation enough. Just the thoughts from a guy caught in the middle. Steve

Not from my Mom's point of view, she had a severe stroke day after Christmas and is missing all the "fun". IF YOU DON'T TAKE CARE OF THINGS UP FRONT, Reverse mortage is a pain in the part of the human body that touches the motorcycle seat !!! Was good for her as it provide a suppliment to her Social Security check. BUT, now that she cannot take care of her own affairs - it is a real pain for me. As I see it a reverse mortage is only good if your heirs have no dessire for your home. Reverse Mortage (RM) is a govt. backed loan. At the "end" they allow several options. 1. your heirs can repurchase the home for the amount of loan (your proceeds) 2. the home can be sold on the open market any amount over your proceeds goes to your heirs, any amount under and the "bank" eats the loss 3. The home can "sit" and go through foreclosure. Now that doesn't sound to bad, but wait lets look at the real world using my Mom as our example. She has a stroke, disabling her and putting her in a rehab/nursing home - she is now not living in the home - violates her terms of the RM - all of them state that it must be your principle residence. So her nice little check stops! This does NOT put the loan into foreclosure mode - just stops the proceeds. Because this is a loan insurance MUST be maintained on the home (in the contract). You say no big deal, ever try to insure a home that no one is living in? just ask your insurance agent they will tell you all about it as they are driving to the bank to deposit your insurance check. No lets talk some more, because Mom did NOT die, and because I have no power of attorney nor conservatorship, I can not "deal" with the RM bank on her behalf. Cannot be sold, she is still living. Cannot go into foreclosure, she is still living, I cannot "buy" it back she is still living. So an okay home sits 250 miles away with full utilities (see insurance agent) and I make the drive one weekend a month and "live" in it so that is a "vacation" home and allows it to be insured. Meanwhile back at the ranch, an attorney is making $2,500 to file in court papers for consevatorship, which will allow me to "deal" with the RM (but the way RM will not even tell me how much to buy the home back becasue it would violate our HIPPA laws). IF YOU ARE GOING TO DO THIS - hire your own attorney to advise you, talk to your heirs, make sure if you have heirs, that provisions are made to allow them to deal with this. It has all been a real nightmare - if you have something of value that would bring your assets above $18,000,(includes any social security check or retirement) you also might not qualify for Medicade - nursing home care in our area is about $7,000 each month. So the short side is this if you have something your want your children to have give it to them NOW - see your attorney and so some estate planning - BEFORE you talk to another person about RM. My cell number is in my profile if you want to talk. Steve

I use a small surveyors "level" field book. The pages are coated and very water resistent. I write in pencil and it stays clear without smudges. Keep notes about maintenace and riding. example here: http://www.forestry-suppliers.com/product_pages/View_Catalog_Page.asp?mi=5737 I also have kept a daily journal for the last 26 years in the same type book but larger size. Most years "fit" into one book so the cost is not bad. Just take a Sharpie and write the year on the spline and set it on a shelf. My daughter that is 26 and married loves to read through them, so just thoughts not real "private" stuff. She has hinted that she wants them when I can not write anymore. Steve

Ride that thing for a week and then let it bleed again. Mine felt "spongy" also and by riding and then bleeding the entire sytem one more time things just felt so much better. Now you know what the fluid levels should be bleeding again will be easy to get right the "first" time. Steve

Yes, Callaway Gardens is a private park and they do have a no motorcycle rule and yes there have been mass rides to the gates to try and change it. But the area itself is great riding. Over the "mountain" to Manchester, GA is a great ride with little traffic and a good road. Just up the road and east is Warm Springs home of the "Little White House" home to FDR. A tour of the fish hatchery here is a good few hours and very interesting. To the North is LaGrange, GA and just out side of town is the "West Point Lake" 25,000 acres of water with all kinds of things to do. For those that camp you have got your pick of places. If you have the time continue north and you will find some really good riding, the towns of Carrolton, and Rome have more than enough to keep you interested. Just outside of Lafayete, Ga is "Cloudland Canyon State Park" very interesting place and very little traffic. If you have worked you way this far north in Georgia you are just outside of Chattanooga, a ride through the Civil War battlefield very early in the morning is a time that will stir the soul. So we traveled from Central West Georgia to North Georgia, just a few days time. What am I doing sitting here typing - let's go ride! Steve N

Story of how steve and hi 83' VR known as "Tent Peg"
sgn replied to massey130's topic in Watering Hole
Amazing how each one of us has a story of how we came be "together" on this forum. One common thread - the enjoyment of riding. I hope more will tell their story! Steve & Tent Peg -
Might not interest some but here goes. The night I met my 83 VR, June 13 2007 11:33 PM. Let me set the stage. Bought off Ebay sight unseen. The wife and I had been looking for months, I knew what I wanted and the wife was my purchasing agent. She found this one in Dothan, Alabama. It had a very low buy it now price and we went for it. In talking with the seller he said he could believe it, only on ebay for 30 minutes. Now I live in Upper East Tennessee so had to get it home, lucked out on a shipper headed this way from Mobil, Alabama and got a great price for transport. The day of arrival came and it was raining elephants and bears. (cats and dogs were nothing) The shipper called at 9:00 AM and ask if I could take a late delivery, what me turn it down NO WAY. So after having not ridden a motorcycle in 27 years the moment of truth was fast approaching. Move the hands of the clock forward and it's 11:30 PM, still raining like Noah is next door and the bike is here, almost. Closest place the shipper can get his rig to my house is 2 miles away. (Did I mention it was raining) So we unload at a closed service station under the canopy. Bike runs really well (thank goodness). I little tryout under the canopy and it's to to "carry it on home". (did I mention the rain?). The plan was for the wife to follow me home keeping any traffic off my rear end. First Bump and all the light go out, first downhill run (mountains here you know) no rear brakes and very little front. Thank Goodness only a mile and 3/4 to go. (don't forget the rain) Found out real quick if you roll on the throttle it would move. Well the next mile was a long mile. Zero visibilty, don't forget the rain, and my rearend in pucker mode. The lights of home come in to view, at least I think its home hard to tell in the rain. At last my prize is home in it's nice DRY basement. The wife looks at me and says "you look like a drowned moose" I really didn't want to tell her it wasn't from the rain but from the "sweat bullets". Over the next few weeks, reading on Venturerider.org, I said it's time to call for help. RandyA I saw lived the next town over so I called and introduced myself, what a blessing he arrived like a night in shinning armour on a purple steed and in one day, a little work and some duct tape the old gal rose from the ashes. So thanks Randy, and more than a few of the rest of you my 83 VR is running well and is now known as "Tent Peg". (another long post) Yes, I know what a great choice this bike was and like it more each time we leave home together. So take a look below - Steve & "Tent Peg" the early days!

March14, 2010: The rock slide on US 129 is located between the Dragon and Happy Valley Road/Foothills Parkway. Removal is scheduled to take several weeks. The road will likely be blocked completely at times, but for now there is one lane open with flaggers. There is no guarantee the one-lane will remain open and as of today we know of no way to check ahead. The only alternatives are the Cherohala Skyway which got more snow this morning and US 441 through the Great Smoky Mountains. Remember it’s a long way to backtrack if the road is completely closed. You are going to have waste if you do any at all ... My statement is backed by 7 years as an Anodizing foreman for an extrusion plant. We spent $$$$$$ for in house treatment of waste. And the EPA was around whenever they wanted to be. Also watch your electric meter spin fast than a Vmax ... Steve

Put the Exide AGM in my 83 VR. Bought from local distibutor, he had it in stock. Showed him a print of the price from Bohannon and he said he could not match it but did get within $5.00 of the shipped price plus tax. It works like a dream, next I'm going to upgrade the battery cables and replace the fuse block. Neat up some of my own wiring additions and call it a done deal. Steve

Post your picture of those helmets that have help YOU survive ... Steve Neal

As a whole this group seems good about riding safe. If you have a picture of a helmet that has giving its life in the line of duty post it up. I will start a new thread for it. I have an idea that might help get the word out to ride aware and protected. Steve Neal

New owner in SC 89 Venture
sgn replied to SC89Venture's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
What areas of East Tennesee you travel through. Here in Tri-Cities (Johnson City, Kingsport, Bristol) there are several active members. Most of us (okay Elmicko - time to update) have out contact info in the member profiles. If traveling through have your people call my people and we'll do lunch! Steve Neal -

These things may be 800 pounds but they have enough to "haul it well" Nice looking ride - come up around exit 63 and let me lay eyes on that thing! Steve

As soon as it warms up is my time line. Getting really tired of owning a "Garage Queen". That route could get "chilly" to soon. So right now I'm "throwing darts" to pick a weekend. Close enough to home if I don't get it done in one day I can always go to other end and work my way back. Just looked like a great way to see some of the history of the area. I have traveled all the roads by car and should make for some good riding. The road off US 23 to Natural Tunnel State Park should be enough challenge for anyone. (Twisty, narrow, steep drop offs, and my favorite - loose junk everywhere. Not to mention the motorhome or two.) Wiil get with you and Elmicko and see if we can put together something. Saw where you posted about rear tire - I got the HF changer so if you want to give it a try yell.

Well, I have decided what my First Spring Riding is going to be. Pack up the camera and go looking around. Begins almost in my backyard and great riding. See here: http://www.danielboonetrail.com/index.php
