Starter motor was no show. Put the carbs and back, filled oil and coolant. hooked extra battery. Turned power on. Heard the clicks from fuel pump, watch the lights cycle in the dash. Pressed start. Solenoid clicked but no starter motor. After doing some tests and different measurements came to following conclusion. Short in the starter motor or gears not working behind left cover. I even tried to give power straight to the terminal of startermotor, just a spark not even a little turn. I doubt it's my battery but to be safe I recharge it tonite and try again tomorrow. Engine turned over nicely by hand. Also when filled coolant and little drops came from plastic pipe that comes from waterpump So disappointing day. I guess I don't have to worry about the brakes or enrichener yet. And the most frustrating thing is that it's my own doings. I thought I serviced the startermotor good but either shorted it or messed up gears as I has the cover off for polishing. Any suggestions should first remove startermotor or left side starter gear cover ? Thanks A

I managed to repair one, so now I have 2 enricheners working. Thanks for all comments this gives me boost to carry on. Yes I am writing from the country of FINLAND. It's hard to get parts and season is short. But somebody has to take care of these 80's beauties up here. I've had many japanese aircooled inline fours. This venture is my first "modern" bike with tci-box and watercooling It seems that prelubing is next. Hopefully today I'll give it spin. Be back with news later today I hope Ar

I try attach a picture of broken and not-broken part four enricheners one ok one stuck and broken one moves but broken one stuck but in one piece and thanks again for all your comments. It's one of those times when I'm thinking just quickly putting back together to get any idea of condition of motor or taking the longer more thorough route doing it right all the way. Usually first way takes me to the second way anyway. But I feel little motivation lacking with all the setbacks and really no idea if this effort will be worth the trouble. I'll worki on it today and let you know the results. A

Thanks for quick reply. I gave little automatic oil when adjusting the valves. The engine turns over nicely by hand. Haven't cranked with starter motor. There's compression. it's a good idea to crank without sparkplugs couple of times when I have the new oil in. with Bench syncing the carbs I meant trying to set visually a starting point with carbs on the table and setting equal air flow gap from sync screws. For more precise tuning I have vacuum gauge and colortune plug. Visually the carbs seem ok. The slides move nicely and there weren't any cracks in the membrane. But I haven't opened them (yet) and since the chokeplungers are stuck there might circuits that are not well. I don't know whether they took it apart in the shop. I guess I try to have choke at least to 2 carbs. Then with fresh battery and starter fluid give it a try. And also I need get a piece of hose that goes to airbox from below carbs between cylinders (maybe a breather hose?). with brakes I deal later if needed. U dont sound encouraging. we are on the same lines Anssi

Hi, I'm putting back on the street new to me Venture 1200 year 1984. In the carbs I noticed Only one choke plunger works, 1 moves but the stud (little bit) is broken, 2 others stuck (the other without stud). I'm was wondering how bad do I need the choke for a test start ? Can I drill a hole and insert little screw to replace the broken part ? I was hoping to try starting it in coming week after I gotten the carbs back in place. It ran last couple of years ago. All tips for starting a bike that's has sat and had engine off are welcome So far The transmission has been changed and the carbs were ultrasonic cleaned at a shop. Did a benchsync. I adjusted the valves.new plugs To do.. The linked rear brake doesn't work The choke ? Thanks, Anssi

Hi, Since I have the bike almost in parts I decided to make an extra ground wire. The bike is 1984 and starter motor two brush. I was hoping to get bigger wire through but was unable to fit it nicely inside. It ran nicely on the bench but since no deeper understanding of electronics I thought I check this with you. How big a risk is this wire to burn or overheat during cranking ? if any ? make it shorter ? remove insulation ? Thanks, Anssi ps. my next question will be about the starter gears. They fell off when removing the stator cover

I want to thank you all for your advice. Desperate search for 4th gear pinion turned out fine and ended up by me buying the whole xvz 89 transmission of ebay. I jumped at it with a hurry before receiving the news that 2nd gen transmission would fit as well. I guess I was really desperate not able to follow discussion couple of hours before purchase. Anyways, in 2-3 weeks to come I should a proud owner of 89 transmission of xvz. With shipping and customs (the amount still unclear) I think the whole sum is about same as buying 2 new gears. While waiting It's time for carbs to get proper cleanup, I'll write another post on that issue. Maybe later in May I have followup to this thread. Thanks again, Anssi

thanks for pointing this out. So do I understand this correctly the transmission in interchangeable through 84 to 93 ? xvz1200 can take xvz1300 transmission ? And 2nd gear problem corrected from 86. It seems that I am looking for used transmission from 86 and onwards. Even with shipping (and customs) It might route to go. A

Hi, Any help greatly appreciated. I took the engine of XVZ 1200 yr 1984 to get transmission repaired. Mechanic says following parts are required but not available in Finland where I live. 3. 26H-17231-00 4. 26H-17141-00 Google tells me they are gear 3rd wheel and gear 4th pinion. Is that correct ? Everything below pistons are a mystery to me. I thought I turned to you experts for pointers where to aquire those gears and if you know compability for replacement. And of course the question is whether my mechanic has got the part numbers correctly to begin with for xvz1200. Thanks, Anssi .

Hi, Been travelling. I thought I get back on tacho being sluggish. It appears to be mechanical. It's just very very SLOWLY follows the engine. When I start the engine tacho stays at 0 for couple of seconds and then Slowly rises.

Hi, Thank you all very much for different suggestion. Here's what I did: - drained fuel from the tank and carb float bowls - changed the plugs - put new fuel into the tank It started up and run on four cylinders ! Didn't have much time to spend but am sure glad to get it running. What was wrong then that it suddenly didn't want start anymore (at the same time as I removed the fairing) ? Maybe I fowled the plugs and they gave in ? I did put some gas into the tank, in my mind I've gone over thousands times whether that could have caused the problem. Cause it ran for a little while and then it didn't. The sparklugs looked really old, didn't bother to test the plugs removed. I'll attach a picture. Could you also educate me on the thing behind eg left rear plug in the cover, what is it (pic2) The tachometer acted really slow, first I thought it doesn't work but then it picked up really slowly. Never had xvz before, I know nothing about history of this bike. Learning Little by little... But it has signs of negletance as in pics. Again thanks for help, starting from the kill switch... never take anything certain

Hi, Thanks for replies. In a way I'm happy to hear that engine should run without the gizmos. Wish it would have have been kill switch or side stand, but no. Did a quick crank test yesterday. The starter turns the engine fine. I tested for spark, with an extra plug. Got steady spark on all four wires while cranking. Don't like using starter fluid, but carefully did anyway. Nada. I'm starting to think that fairing removal and starting problem are not connected. The tank was almost empty when I got the bike. Gave about a gallon of fresh gas. Air filter seemed ok, tried without it, no effect. Back basics. There's compression as it ran, I do get spark, fuel ? Fuel pump ? Did I hear clicks ? I think so, never had bike with fuel or water pump before. Wasn't able to the pull plugs without a thinwalled thingy.I try get one today as well as new plugs. I'll get the plugs out and share the results. I hate the feeling of paranoia creeping in. Maybe the fuel I bought was bad

Hi, I'm a new member with a new to me -84 xvz 1200. Quick question: should the engine run without the fairing ( radio, intercom, signal lights etc ), it should, right ? Got the bike a week ago. It started and ran well. Due to the winter wasn't able to do a proper test drive, but it idled ok. Started several times. I took the farings off and now the lights come on , the computer seems ok, it cranks but doesn't fire up. The battery is not the issue, I use backup fullycharged battery when testing. To my understanding only wires I disconnected were radio, signal lights, speakers, emergency signal, intercom. Are any of those connected to spark circuit ? I also sprayed some starter liquid to air box while starting, with no success. I seem to have lost the spark. I didn't see any badly made jumps in the wiring, I assume it's standard wiring other than fuse box. That has been changed. Bikes has 52 thousand miles on the clock. There are some minor cracks in the front fairing. I think it's royal with class system removed. This is my first touring bike, and also my first bike so much modern tech I've previously had xj900, cb 750, gsx750 all from early 80,s. Simple bikes for simple rider. XVZ seems to have more electronics than those together. It's gonna be 3-4 months winter where I live, before riding season starts. During that my aim is to repair fairing cracks, clean carbs, check valves, clean starter motor, change all fluids .... Been following this forum for a while, didn't want to sign up before I owned the bike. There seems to be huge knowhow within the group. I'll check the plugs and report back. Thanks, Anssi
