86 venture backfiring
Tupperj replied to kevin-vic-b.c.'s topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
YICS is the Yamaha Induction Control System which basically is a balancing system between the various cylinders. Here's a link to the XS1100 site that has a pretty good explanation: www.xs11.com/tips/norm/yics.htm Of course, works a little differently on the XS than the Venture, as one is an inline 4 and the other a V four, but you get the idea. I'm sure you'll find more info here with a search. Paul -
Ladies and Gentlemen! Believe it or not replacement battery cables for the First Gens are available once again. I just put an ad in the classifieds with the details. Short version: $35 shipping included to US or Canada. Money back guarantee. Sorry for the delay folks, but they are here and ready for winter upkeep. Thanks everyone! Paul

One of my other Yamaha groups has dealt with this issue before. The best suggestion I remember was using a watch crystal. They seem to be available at watch repair shops in the correct size. Held in with epoxy. I'll post back if I can find some references.

I bought one of these to bring a Maxim 650 home. Should have known better, but I failed to secure the handlebars to the truck. First turn out of the driveway, and the bike tipped, bending the hitch attachment. Gave up and rented a trailer. Good idea, perhaps, but would need to be properly engineered. As far as the final drive, it has it's own oil reservoir, so no worried there. Paul

I've got a pair of Sidi motorcycle boots that would fit ya! I wear a 12 and these are big on me. Think They're a size 48 European. They do have a side zipper though. They are waterproof. If you're interested, I can make you a good deal on'em! Paul P.S. Essentially new, I bought'em and found out quick they're too big for me.

Plastic Repair
Tupperj replied to CrazyHorse's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
Guys, sorry to come in late on this, been out breaking the Mark I in. I'm a firm believer in Stainless Steel Socket Head Cap Screws. As I was looking at some broken pins, it occured to me that a 6mm SHCS would fit, and it does, very well. You can get them in several lengths (I buy in bulk from Grainger) and use a couple of nuts to hold them in place. If they aren't QUITE tight enough for your liking, put some heat shrink tubing over the ends. I know, I know, this is useless without pics. Will try to get some in the near future. Too busy freezing in West Virginia and loving the Venture! Paul -
After a lot of thinking I'm parting out my wife's bike

Jack, Don't know if you've checked out xjbikes.com or the xj-owners groups over at micapeak. Lots of guys there looking for Maxim parts. Good folks as well. A lot like here! -
If someone suggests kissing them to make them better the PG rating might just get revoked! Man, you sure know how to get a guy's attention! Paul

Tommy, How's your carb sync? When this happened on my XS1100, it turned out my carbs were way out of sync. Good luck! Paul

Double D A quick look at the Avon site shows the H symbol to be a speed rating, in this case up to 130 MPH. Didn't see a mention of the B, but I'd guess it means black wall. You might poke around http://www.avon-tyres.co.uk/motorcycle and see if anything shouts out at you. Paul

I Need To Know......
Tupperj replied to NLAlston's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
Nathan, If you have trouble getting the bike up on the center stand, you might consider picking up one of the Pingel type front wheel chocks. You should be able to work out an easy, safe way to hold the bike vertical so you can check the oil or even the brake/clutch fluid. Speaking of your other fluids, I think you mentioned stripped screws? Should be "fairly easy" to drill out the heads so you can get the cover off. Then you can get a grip on what's left with vice grips and get the remains out. It also lets you get some PB Blaster, or other rust buster down into the threads to make it easier. You should probably clean out and replace the fluid in the master after that, as you'll undoubtedly contaminate it in some way. Good luck! Paul -
I Need To Know......

NLAston, The window you're looking for is way down low on the right side as you're sitting on the bike. Look toward the front of the engine, around where the forward exhaust tubes bend towards the back. Window is about the size of a quarter between the two lower bars of the case guards. Hope that helps. There is a picture in the service manual on 2-11. Good luck! Paul -
Just to add to this with regard to the care and feeding of torque wrenches. One thing I've read, and it makes sense to me, is that torque wrenches, at least of the "clicker" type, should be stored with the setting at it's lowest level. Why? Takes the tension off the spring mechanism and helps keep it more accurate. At least that was the consensus on one of the other boards I monitor. YMMV, Paul

In the gravity fed world of XS and XJ bikes I from, this is called GasOil. Happens when the float needles stick open and the vacuum operated petcocks fail. Lots of gas flows out of the carb, and if the intake port is open, into the cylinder, past the rings and into the crankcase. Problem with that here, is the fuel pump. Is there any chance the bike was left on, so that the fuel pump would continue to run after shutdown? That would be the only way I can see for the tank to empty. I'd suggest checking the fuel pump to make sure it is powering down when it should. My .02, worth pretty much what you paid for it. Paul

EFI Conversion

A1, I'm looking into this as well. I'd love to FI my current XS1100 along with the newly acquired Ventures. I like the MegaSquirt system, and have already acquired a box full of different throttle bodies. There are a couple of folk who have done the XS1100, a google search should find them. Easiest thing to do I think would be to find a set of throttle bodies in the V4 configuration. Don't know what bikes that would be, but finding a set at a wrecker/E-Bay along with the fuel pump might not be too expensive. It is an interesting project. Keep us posted if/when you make progress! Paul Edit: Here's a link to a guy who did it to a VMax. Some interesting ideas on what it takes: http://www.saarloos.net/content/blogcategory/14/28/- 12 replies

Strange Noise
Tupperj replied to SuamicoBob's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
Bob, I don't think play in the rear wheel is normal. At least, not on any of the bikes I've wrenched on to date. Would be a good time to check the bearings and the axle. Paul -
Giga, New to the Venture world, but I've been cruising for a while. I'm a personal fan of the Autocom system. Yes, they are pricey, but they work great! I hook up an MP3 player, and my phone, and on our last cross country had FRS radios with push to talk buttons as well. Still have an input for a GPS or whatever. Sound quality is wonderful, and the tunes mute when the FRS or phone is in use. Plus, both passenger and I can talk on the phone and we've had conversations on the bike where the person on the other end had no idea we were riding until SWMBO chimed in. My plan is to remove the CB and put the tape deck. Will put in a separate sealed battery to just run the stereo, then I can use that for tunes when we stop without worrying about running down the bike battery and getting stuck. My .02, worth about what you paid for it. Paul

Cowpuc: Awesome write-up! I think I the guy who recommended the wire brush bristle, glad it worked for you. I wouldn't recommend using one on your carbs though. The brass jets in the carbs can be scratched/altered by a steel strand. Folks on the other lists I'm on recommend using something from a plastic scrub brush, or plastic guitar string. Much less likely to mess with the dimensions/flow of your jets. Just a thought, random as it might be. Glad you have your brakes straightened out! Paul

Puc, if the Ventures are like the XS11's that I've torn into, the return or "spooge" (Don't ask me why folks call it that!) is located towards the banjo bolt in the bore of the cylinder. It's VERY small! Something one would clean out with the bristle of a wire brush kind of small. Doesn't take much to block it, and if you force the piston back you'll just wedge it in tighter. I'd recommend a tear down and clean/rebuild. Other posters are correct, most of the parts are reusable, but kits are cheap and you're not! I personally don't fool around with brakes or tires. Failures there can have swift and serious consequences. One last hint: Many have problems getting the system to bleed air after a rebuild. I've had luck bleeding the master first by holding a finger over the banjo bolt hole and exercising the piston. You can feel just the slightest pressure build up on you finger until the "pump gets primed" and then it becomes easy to bleed out. SpeedBleeders are a help too. Long winded, but hopefully helpful!
