  1. Hey Rocky... Watch me pull a rabbit out of my hat. OK, to confuse the oil filter issue even further, I intend to use a Purolator PL14459 on my next oil change. The PL14459 is the same height as the PL14612 The PL14459 is fatter than the PL14612 and we all have plenty of room in the horizontal & vertical directions, just not the longitude. The PL14459 gasket ID & OD diameter is the same as the PL14612. The PL14459 gasket to 1st thread depth @ 0.300" is the same as a PL14612 The PL14459 has a Pressure Differential Valve setting of 12-15 psi compared to the PL14612 setting of 14-18 And these specs conform nicely to the Yamaha Factory Requirements.
  2. That won't work as the filter flange is about 3/32" thick and really unbendable. The tin can filter body will smash up before the mounting flange gives way.
  3. Ok, now we are getting somewhere. I am going to assume that those two filters are the PL14610 (yellow) and the L14610 (white). There is clearly a difference between the two. When I cut up a L14612 ( white-short filter ) http://www.venturerider.org/forum/showthread.php?96009-Oil-Filter-Comparisons-Hey-I-m-no-Engineer the mounting plate was concave. There appears to be a difference now in the L14610 (white-long) & L14612 (yellow-short) mounting plates. The current L14610 (white-long) may be harder to fit as the plate is convex and will not funnel the Oil Filter Mounting Bolt to it, however it may still work as the mounting depth of gasket to first thread may still be the same. Your old PL14610 (yellow-long) and the PL14612 (yellow-short) that I have on my bike now both seem to have concave mounting plates. If your PL14612 (yellow-short) has a top that now looks convex like the L14610 (white-long) then maybe Purolator mis-labeled some filters as the PL14612 (yellow-short) has always had a concave mounting flange. My measurement of 0.300" from gasket to first thread depth as shown at the beginning of this article was taken using a 4 lb pry bar atop the filter gasket (maybe 0.004" or 0.005" compressed from the weight) to the first thread depth and I was using the top of the thread to provide a minimum clearance number. However, your measurement of 0.350" would suggest a plenty of depth that would provide the ability to tighten the filter down all the way, while not hitting the Oil Filter Mounting Bolt that would impede sealing. One of my suggestions is to make sure your Oil Filter Mounting Bolt is as far in as it can go by attempting to tighten it to 36 ft lb during your next oil change. I would find this dimension to be more of a variable than how Purolator makes oil filters. When I screw my PL14612 (yellow-short) on, I have it on tight enough so that the gasket is compressed and that the metal of the filter can outside diameter is touching the Oil Filter Mounting Flange on the bike. You would have a hard time getting a 0.002" feeler gauge in there. (I am really going to have to have a talk with the fellow that cleans that bike. It's filthy under there.)
  4. You may have something there. Part #11 Starting Cut Off Relay is located behind center cover behind cyl 1 & 3. Swap it out with your other bike and see what happens.
  5. I can't even get the seat off in 2.38 hours.... To be fair, they could have shaved time off the bill trying to give you a break, they could have thrown in free gaskets, they could have done this that and the other. But, the fact that this question of valve adjustment exists means that you will be having a conversation with them shortly. I'm interested in hearing how that goes as well.
  6. Those are spiffyplendiferious!!!
  7. Djh3: You have brought many variables to the table and I am having a hard time keeping up. Please help us out. You normally use a Purolator 14610(white)/PL14610(Yellow) filter but choose to go with a Bosch 3323 this oil change. Can you tell us why? The Bosch 3323 left drips under the bike overnight. Did you see the gasket make contact with the base and were you able to give it another 3/4 turn? Now that the Bosch 3323 is off the bike can you send us a pic of the top of it? You then bought a new Purolator 14610(white)/PL14610(yellow) which is the filter that you have been using all along. However, this one was too tall to fit. Is the new filter taller/longer than your previous 14610(white)/PL14610(yellow) filter and if so can you stand them side by side and send a pic? Now on the bike is a Purolator (14612(white)/PL14612(yellow)short) and did you see the gasket contact this time and were you able to give it another 3/4 turn? Just for giggles, did you make sure that the Oil Filter Mounting Bolt was as far as it could go in by checking to see if it was torqued to 36 ft lbs?. Please do not use a Fram.... Thank you for your help.
  8. Congrats & Best Wishes!
  9. By "flat" do you mean that the gasket to first thread depth was
  10. Did they charge you for valve cover gaskets? Do they look new? 1.89L of straight Antifreeze may be enough. 1.89L of premix antifreeze is not enough.
  11. To show up in person.... You don't get no better service than this!
  12. ME TOO! I'd like to try talking you in to cutting your used one up at your next oil change and letting us know what you find.
  13. Hmmmm..... Sidestand up causes Neutral to come on!?!?!? According to the manuals available here: The Neutral Switch is a DPST switch - One leg may be shorted to ground which powers the neutral light. The Sidestand Switch is a SPST switch that goes through a Diode. Maybe a bad Diode. Sidestand is 27 Neutral is 66 Please understand that this is just my WAG as I have not had this happen yet. I would whip out the meter and checking using the schematic as located here. http://www.venturerider.org/forum/showthread.php?42357-2nd-Gen-Wiring-Schematics-99-09-RSV
  14. I have recently heard of two reports of a Purolator PL14612 not screwing on far enough to make a complete seal. Seems to work ok on my RSV so far... I will keep an eye out. The factory 5GH-13440-30 has a gasket to first thread depth of 0.300" The Purolator PL14612 has a gasket to first thread depth of 0.235" which is 0.065" less than a factory filter, (I know the caliper is crooked in the picture but I measured it before I took the pic.) I would suggest that you first make sure that the Union Bolt is tightened to 36 ft lbs and if you still can't get a seal it may be time to look for another filter. I have not yet had the chance to measure the depth of a PL14610. Anybody else have one they could look at and tell us?
  15. Oconeedan: See here. http://www.venturerider.org/forum/showthread.php?96009-Oil-Filter-Comparisons-Hey-I-m-no-Engineer and here http://www.venturerider.org/forum/showthread.php?95817-Crush-Washers
  16. Drool.......Yum!
  17. 8mm X 1.00 X 25mm I think if it is the same as the RSV.
  18. I dunno.... You posted this on April 1st......
  19. I guar-ron-tee you that Honda will get this fixed quick and right, especially since it is the second time around for this.
  20. American Honda Motors has released the fix for the auto-ignition of the rear brake system. The repair involves the simple placement of a label on the shaft formerly known as "The Rear Brake Pedal". The label says, "BBQ Grill Starter". The BBQ Grill Starter Shaft should only be used to start fires, any other use of this shaft, such as trying to use it to stop the motorcycle, is not authorized or warranted by American Honda Motors. Smoke em if ya got em. Marshmallows anyone?
  21. By the book your rad cap is supposed to be a 26H-12462-00 But it might work. Looking up cap # 3xp-12462-00 It says it fits everything from some 200, some FJ's, Royal Stars, etc. Compare it to your old cap as far as size, pressure, etc.
  22. Modify the headlight bucket and install a JW Speaker lamp. Same maker as Harley uses. here is an article on how to do it. http://www.venturerider.org/forum/showthread.php?498-Headlamp-Replacement Lamp specs shown below. jwspeaker.pdf
  23. Jim See here http://www.venturerider.org/forum/showthread.php?57207-Changing-the-Fork-Oil
  24. I think a 99 is a second generation Venture and is marketed as a "RSV" or Royal Star Venture. See here for Fuel Filter change info http://www.venturerider.org/forum/showthread.php?76515-2nd-Gen-changing-the-fuel-filter The fuel pump not clicking is not a good sign. There is also an article about Fuel Pumps in the read only Tech Section of SECOND GEN AND ROYAL STAR TECHNICAL LIBRARY forums.
  25. And now for something completely different!!!!
