Ok, question for you. Why do you want to tackle this versus just take it to the shop? My way and the suggestions I will make will be hard, time consuming and expensive.

Well... seems we have a 10 year old clutch system on original fluid that has been slipping since it had 5000 miles on it, starting about 35000 miles ago. If you have not serviced it at all, now is probably not the time to start wrenching on it. My 1st suggestion would be just to take it to your favorite shop and have them work on it. You have already said that you are Mr. UNwrench and there is nothing wrong with that at all.

2004 shows to be a MIDNIGHT Venture and Yamaha has those for $400.00 Might be cheaper to get one from Yamaha already painted the color you need than to get one cheaper of a different color, then have to spend more money getting that one painted.

The dogbones are longer which lets you sit lower. I do not believe travel is changed. With the dogbones completely off, the swingarm will go up higher till it hits something. Shock travel is not changed.

Yeah... I've ridden with a plug more than once. If the plug fails then I am back to the same leak I had when I started. About 3psi a day. No catastrophic air loss all at once. The maximum mileage I have ridden with a rear tire plugged was on a Dunlop 404, which also got punctured when new, and I rode that one out for 7K miles.

You have to take the muffs off just to get to the bolts. If you do just this, then no, it is not worth it. To get the weight off the pivots you have to remove the bolts holding the swing arm dog-legs off. If you do this and the muffs... still not worth it. Well... might as well take the wheel off... If you do the wheel, dog-legs, and muffs... still not worth it. Well... might as well take the swingarm off, clean and grease all bearings. Now you are talking worth it.

You are absolutely correct. By the way, the Yamaha only has a one year real warranty, the rest is a service contract that does not have to abide by the moss magnuson warranty act.
