  1. I would advise against this, because the hose is a formed hose and a straight piece might kink restricting fluid intake for the master.

Since the factory replacement was $27.00 and would take more than a week to get I had little option so I used the brake hose I got from the local truck repair place.

The factory bend is so slight it hasn't caused any issues yet but time will tell.

  2. Another note. Take the hose off where it is connected to the master and drain the fluid into a small jar , can or whatever you have that is not plastic.

After it has drained off take it off the reservoir and take the hose to a shop that makes hoses up for trucking etc. and have them cut you a new piece.

If at all possible do not use a used one from a salvage yard since they can be as bad as the one you already have.

Some truck repair shops make their own hoses up so you can try that but.....make sure you tell them this is for brake line/fluid use as regular hose like fuel likes will dissolve/melt.

  3. Better do that speedo soon. It won't last long once it starts making noise. Good thing is Yamaha don't overcharge for them or didn't a couple years ago when I got my last one. I got a set of those Jardines. They sound very good.

Disconnected the speedo so it didn't come apart on the road. Hoping its just a little lube and maybe a gear adjustment.

May start looking for a replacement now just in case.

  4. Finely got the 83-VR project bike together enough to take her out for a shakedown ride today.

She has new brake pads and tires, all new fluids, and filters.

Got the braking and electrical systems repaired and checked out and everything worked fine including the "CLASS" air ride system, all lights, etc.

Will have to take the speedo out and lube/repair it as it makes a lot of noise once we hit 40mph.

Road 130 miles today around a lot of twisty turns and mountain back roads as well as some 25 miles at highway speed and she handled great. Averaged right at 44mpg so I guess the carbs are adjusted just about right.

Next thing to do is apply some paint and polish some more of the aluminum.

Here are a few pictures of where she is so far. More pictures will come after paint and polish.

  5. Zzyzzx Thanks for the heads up. I notice you haven't got Washington state colored in on your map. Great place to ride and so close to BC Canada. Love to have you up in our great province. 40% off on Canadian $

Heading there in July for "Krusin the Kootenays" Ride in Castleger, BC then plan to go up to Banff then head west to Vancouver and if time allows over to Victoria Island then south into Washington.

Are you doing the K-T-K ? If so see you there, if not maybe we can meet up somewhere in BC.

  6. Like Beastwood said, 395 is a great ride along the mountain road and lots of desert after you cross out of a little town of Red Mountain.

One thing to really watch out for is when you get close to Kramer junction at the crossroads of 395 and Hwy 58.

Watch out for tourists that are always in a hurry and for Trucks, Big Trucks, and lots of them.

Traffic is bad there so watch your back and all around.

    Have fun and Ride Safe!

  7. Thanks to everyone for the worm welcome. My background in motorcycles is limited. I bought a 2004 R6 new before I even had my endorsement. I realize I need to take it easy and get a feel for it, she is heavy. My background in mechanics is 10 years USAF F-15, and 5 more years F-15 privet contract. As to the info so far. I have checked the tires, Dunlop E3 front (150) Sep 13, back Dec 14, both look good on ware. I will be getting to all the fluids. any recommendations on tips and viscosity? I only ask because I know over time people fined things that work better over what is called for in the manual. For the final drive will I be needing to pull and lube as well, or is there a way to know before pulling? I am looking into the valve clearance check it was on my list. Thanks for everything from all so far.

You do not have to pull the rear wheel to check the final drive fluid. You can check the final drive fluid from the top of the drive behind the exhaust pipe. (Exploded view #24 /25 Below)

There is a cap that unscrews and you can stick a little finger or a small screwdriver inside to check level, At the Top Is Good.

When you remove the rear wheel you can then clean and re-grease the drive gears both on the rive and wheel.

As for oil preferences everyone has their favorites from standards to synthetics.

I use Valvoline 20W-40 that I pick up from WalMart for around $4.00 or less p/qt.

I ride a lot of long distance rides on interstates and back roads and sometimes in the summer heat so the 20W-40 works best for me.

You can also get the Fram oil filter there (PH6017) for under$7.00

During colder riding times, below 40, I will sometimes change to a 15W-40 grade oil. I use RotillaT in this case as it works well in our bikes.

Whatever you choose to use just make sure it has the JASO certification on the back which is for use in wet clutch systems.

  8. First off Welcome to the group.

As you will find this is the best site for getting information about RSV's and the people here will help you get through any issues you may encounter along the way.

I ride a 1999 RSV much like the one you have (pictures below) but have added some bling so...get ready as this may become a fun addiction :)

As for tools you will need the basics like a good set of Metric wrenches, sockets, ball aliens, left handed metric phillips, etc.

If you get a M/C jack you will also need to get an RSV jack adaptor as the pipes will get bent if you do not use one or use 2x4's to get the surface below the pipes. CarbonOne (Larry) has these available and you can contact him using VR private messaging.

Some things you will need to check: Tires for wear and age, get new if worn or old - change all fluids (oil, brake, coolant, clutch, final drive) check air or replace filters. Check the brake pads and/or change them out. they are not expensive. That's the basics

Another good recourse for details about where things are on the bike and what parts and where is the link to Yamahas parts finder. Here is a link to the 1999 RSV parts list from my local dealer. http://www.roseville-yamaha.com/fiche_select2.asp?category=Motorcycles&make=Yamaha&year=1999&fveh=177466

You got a great deal and will have a lot of fun riding this.

    Ride Safe and again, Welcome.

  9. What the heck Puc?

I know we are all getting older and things either stop working or...I can't remember, but you guys have had enough stuff happen this past year for a dozen people.

Hope this goes away soon but if it lingers very long maybe a bunch of us can swing by and help set up a throttle/brake control so you can ride-ride-ride, and even stop when you want.

Would hate to see you have to ride in a cage :)

    Get Better Bud!

  10. Ok I bought a 5 quarts of oil brought them home put them in the garage. Went back a day later to town to get the filter I forgot.. Come home and now I cannt find my oil. I bet it is right where I left it.

I did something just like that once but for the life of me can't remember what it was.

Oh well, welcome to old age :)

  11. Lowest gas price in the Sacramento/Auburn CA area runs at $2.25 p/gal and in So-Cal its around $2.65.

The state is also looking to add another 6 cents p/gal tax and another $65.00 p/yr to every vehicle registration.

Got to find another place to live, maybe head toward Puc's for lots of hog dogs, chips, and lower gas prices.

  12. An Israeli doctor says: "In Israel, medicine is so advanced that we can cut off a mans testicles, put them on another man, and in 6 weeks, he is out looking forwork".

The German doctor says: "That's nothing, in Germany we take part of a brain and put it in another man and in 4 weeks, he's out looking for work.

The Russian doctor says: "gentlemen, we take half a heart from a man and put in another mans chest and in 2 weeks he is out looking for work".

The Canadian doctor laughs: "We beat you all. A few months ago, we took a woman with No Brains, No Heart and No Balls and made her Premier of Alberta. Now the whole Province is looking for work"!

    Was her name Bruce?

  13. A buddy of mine is looking for a 60's era Triumph Bonneville fuel tank so I thought I would put the work out to the board in case someone might have one lying around their stash of old parts.

If you have one PM me with any details, cost, etc, and I will relay the info to him.

    Thanks.
