I agree that it sounds logical to sync nearer the cruising RPM. I have done it both ways, but mine seems to run smoother when syncing near idle. I can always tell when I need a sync as I get a vibration in my right hand grip. Can't really say that I notice a difference in gas mileage.

Project: Turbulence
Leland replied to dusty1300's topic in Royal Star and Royal Star Tour Deluxe Tech Talk
Dusty, how tall are you? You said that you put on Clearview's tallest shield, which is 1.5" taller than stock. I am 5'8". I started with their stock height with the recurve, but could not stand looking thru the recurve (I do see where you don't have the recurve). I now have the one that is 3" shorter than stock (and no recurve), look just over the top of the shield and am very pleased. Traveling 75-85MPH (actual), I do not have any problems. Of course there is nothing that you can do about a strong cross wind. Your big Clearview must really impact your gas mileage.- 22 replies

Installed my SpeedOhealer
Leland replied to shikano53's topic in Royal Star Venture Tech Talk ('99 - '13)
I set my Speedohealer at 8½% and it now reads identical to my GPS. The odometer now reads 5% lower than the GPS (Zumo 550).- 15 replies

Seat and backrest
Leland replied to AD5ME's topic in Royal Star and Royal Star Tour Deluxe Tech Talk
The Yamaha tinted lower wind vents STR-1D608-80-00 will help with this. Believe it or not, the floorboards stay cooler with the vents closed. -
That is a good find. With its 310 CCA, it looks to be the same as Yuasa's YTX20HL. The stock Yuasa YTX20L has 270 CCA.

The airbox's hole to the carbs only measures an 1 13/16" diameter which equals an area of 2.85". So, as long as the total free flowing area of the filter is at least this much, I don't see any advantage. Now, a supercharger might do the trick.

How old is your battery? -
Do you guys get "winter blend" gas in Florida? It will drop your mileage.

Seat and backrest
Leland replied to AD5ME's topic in Royal Star and Royal Star Tour Deluxe Tech Talk
I too have the Butt Butler Mod on the factory seat and very pleased with it. I have a rider's back rest from Diamond R, but I don't believe they make them for the RSTD any more. I think Utopia still does. I really like the seat beads, especially in hot weather. Those Ethiopian cab drivers knew what they were doing. -
I think the wheel has a directional arrow also.

You would have thought that two highly educated people would have been smart enough to have carbon monoxide detectors in their home.

Looks good. According to the weather forecast, I doubt you will be riding tomorrow.

The information on the Zumo Forum is right on the money. Fixed mine.

I have the exact same problem with mine. I too contacted Garmin and they said to update the Zumo. I never did it, because I knew that couldn't be it. Will head over to Zumo Forums. Thanks for posting.

You don't say how many BTUs your heater is rated for, but as you can see from the attached chart, the tank's vaporization rate is greatly effected by the outdoor temperature.

You could use one of these with any standard gas water heater. http://www.tjernlund.com/gassidewall.htm

I have my rear facing the right side and I DO NOT like it. Very inconvenient next to the brake rotor. Next tire change, I'm going back to the left (tire stems only).

Mine started failing after a couple of years. Intermittently at first, then it wouldn't move at all. I found the cable (three or four wires inside) going to the coil, power, ground, etc. had a break in it about 18" from the tach. I cut the cable off about 6" from the tach and spliced in a black, 4-conductor telephone cord (the one that goes between the phone and wall). The telephone cord is made from stranded wire and plenty flexible. I staggered the spliced wires and covered with black tape. Not too unsightly.

I've been meaning to mention this for some time, but keep forgetting. When I installed the SpeedBleeders on mine a while back, I had a defective one. Both of the front brakes and rear brake worked great, but when I installed the one on the clutch, I could not get any fluid through it no matter what I did. Ended up having to re-install the original bleeder to get it to work. Found that the SpeedBleeder was defective. Bottom line, check them before you install them. I'll just replace it next time.

GPS Mounting & Connecting on an RSTD

I have the Edsets that I use with my Zumo 550 and also noticed that I could not quite hear well with them. Can only compare them to a Scala Rider bluetooth. I just figured it was due to being half deaf. I bought a rechargeable amplifier (iASUS) that has a volume control knob that comes in real handy. I wish the Zumo audio was speed dependent like the Scala.

Speedometer 10% fast
Leland replied to Sandbagger's topic in Royal Star Venture Tech Talk ('99 - '13)
When I installed my Speed-O-Healer a couple of years ago, I set it for -8.5%. Now, according to my GPS, the speedometer is exactly correct, however the odometer now reads 5% low. -
