  1. Lol a fellow Peoria'an. Was thinking the same thing hmm do we have the time to make a run south. I really am thinking we need a central IL meet an great. Was not sure how many I would get. I will post that in the proper place.
  2. It looks stronger than the weld on my bike but ya, not real functional
  3. Thank you all for the input, any more to chime in
  4. I bout my 88 with floor boards and toe heel kit. I like the floor boards but I am not sure about the shifter and Brake on the G1. I have heard some good and bad as well. The previous owner broke the pass through on the left cover and welded it. He claims he was slamming gears when I broke. He had it welded and then I think he parked the bike, I managed to brake it again when I was fixing the starter clutch and did not put the shifter in the up position, I did not jam it but maybe twice that way but it could have been enough. I put the cover off the parts bike on and sealed things up. As the parts bike has the old school stuff I have my choice of floor boards and heel toe or not. So give me your 2 cents. as Always Thanks
  5. Yup I watched for that pesky shifter thanks to you the last couple of times I had it off. But your right I do think the extra stress from the time I did not know to look for it and may have re broke the darn thing. He said it happend the first time when he was slamming gears. I may rev a bit but I don't slam gears anymore. I can't say the same for my 84, I was a bit younger and dumber back then. lol thank you all for the help. I am going to start another thread over in the Water N Hole ( Toe heel or no toe heel that is the question).
  6. Well I got the starter clutch fixed and the left side cover back on. And even did a happy dance . Well I got to an appointment and parked the old girl. After I came out and started her up and pulled away, well I put my heal on the shifter and hmmm, I could not shift up or down. Remembering that the guy I got the the old girl from he said he had some peace welded down by the shifter. I looked and could not find any weld marks. So I pulled over and looked. and this is what I found. http://i120.photobucket.com/albums/o190/techee28714/Mobile%20Uploads/2014-10/20141027_122545.jpg Well I have a parts bike so I was only slightly put out, So being well acquainted with that side of the bike from the clutch I pulled the left cover on the parts bike and switched the parts and now am ready to put the cover on. I had to buy a new gasket. That brings me to my next question the gasket is made of what seems to be rubber , I have read two trains of thought on this use a gasket seal and no gasket seal. So what do you all say.
  7. Thank you Joe for putting me back in the running, did some checking and its cool what you find in your back yard you never knew you had. Good chance to take the oldest daughter out for her first ride in prob 10 years, she was smaller then lol
  8. Thank you Marcarl, I will check that, I know I put it back in the right spot but I am not sure if it is worn or not. I have read that you can heat the washer up to restore it.
  9. Update: Well here is were we are at. Well I am no longer afraid of fixing my starter clutch. I got the starter clutch out of the parts bike and in that proses I dinged up the nut on the drum a bit. I will be sending pics and and talking to Dano about this to see if he can still use this to rebuild it. So I took the clutch out of the good drum from my good bike and this is what I found. If you have read up as you should you will find this is common. http://i120.photobucket.com/albums/o190/techee28714/IMG_20141012_131940_520-1.jpg The bolts were also loose. So I took the good clutch and good drum and put them together. http://i120.photobucket.com/albums/o190/techee28714/IMG_20141012_134245_178-1.jpg Just an Idea,to keep all the parts together I zip-tied it all. I also used Blue lock-tight. http://i120.photobucket.com/albums/o190/techee28714/IMG_20141012_134522_543_1.jpg now for the one of the last steps I missed, as you can see the shifter shaft is in the down Position. As you put the cover back on make sure that the shaft is in the up position as Marcarl said. The other thing I found is when I pulled the clutch's the bolt threads were Odd.http://i120.photobucket.com/albums/o190/techee28714/IMG_20141012_132904_883-1.jpg So I used the best out of the ones I had. I have a small leak I need to deal with from the smaller cover so I will be pulling it again and cleaning things. I didn't have the leak the first time I put it all back together so It is prob I just don't have it all pulled together tight but I would rather be safe. She is running top notch and I am on cloud 9. Not only is things running Great I did it my self. Thanks you all. I will have to say, This is the best 12 bucks I have spent in a long time.
  10. Well got things put back together and hit the magic button and veroooom, woohooo so I started putting the floor bordes back and checked the shifter. Seems like it is bound I think there is something wrong were the shift shaft goes through the side cover will look more tomorrow but any other ideas that do not include draining all the oil and such would be great.
  11. Hmmm historical bell in the Midwest, were did I put that little bell we got from Philadelphia this past summer. Lol
  12. Don't know the Need but God does. Will keep them in prayer and agree with Yammer. Blessings
  13. Update Me .... 1 Clutch ..1 As you probably fingered after a quick call to Dano ( thank you, The people on this site/Club is more like it, are great I have talked with 3 personaly now and they all have been so Helpful and encouraging) I have the first starter clutch off will work on the parts bike tomorrow. Things I have learned 1. Be patience, I broke 2 8m class 10 bolts, they were the ones that came with the puller so I am not sure if they were "cheep" bolts or not. 2. Use Good Bolts, I went to the John Deer dealer and got Good class 10.9 bolts. 3. use the cold, sort of goes with patience, Dano mentioned and I remember reading some stories of cranking it down and leaving it over night. After getting done with my JD run and my work for the day I cranked it down good. and Left it until 10:30PM. I took the Dog out and popped the puller on the shaft and wala. 4. that brings me to the final thing I want to reenforce, Tie that thing down LOL give it some room to pop but not let it fly and hit the floor. When that thing let loos, I could tell it would have been at Dano's shop without a box or need for postage. a State away lol. Will keep you all posted and Hope this as well as the other threads will help others keep there Grand Old Girls up and running. I love my First Gen's:080402gudl_prv:
  14. I have talked with Dano already and plan on sending my assembly to him in time, for now I have a parts bike with a good clutch on it, if I could get away from work and family I could be back up and running in a couple hours. Dano's upgrade is well worth the cash and I still plan on doing it when I have the spare cash, the nice thing is I will send him my "spare" assembly to convert only down side is When the next clutch goes I will have to do all this over again, but by then I will have done this project 2 times already and be a pro.

  16. Not this little Gray Duck lol a little to far off the ground. I freak every time we go through the mountains and Yes I am driving lol . Wife tells kids to put there headphones on and not to bug dad.
  17. Good on you Steve!!! Keep up the weight loss its much harder going down , I have said if God made everything taste like breselsprouts we all would be thinner. The oil is great stuff have used it for years as well works great on my kids bug bites. I think we all will add the front fender to the pre ride check list. You know , we do a "walk around " on a 20 ton tractor but alot of us just jump on and go with our 800 pound bikes. Not to smart , the tractor , bus , garbage truck whatever vehicles take a CDL to drive have more than 2 wheels guys. How much more important is it to make sure your stead is in good shape before you ride off to save the day.
  18. TX2 sounds like we would get along great,HMMM how am I going to fit this screwdriver on the gen 1 LOL. I have been a Gen class for some time and have a full G5RV in the back yard. Its all the wife will let me have LOL. It does some great DX but I drool over some of the other setups in the area. The Mod seems to be the no brainer way to go. I will look at what its going to read the thread some more today I know it will let me know what its going to take. As far as the carbs a better break down would be nice, I have the book but the guy taking the pics must have been in 6th grade. I pulled the carbs 2 times now and had them split ( all apart but the sync rod) Had to clean them up a bit to get it running when I got it but I did not have the kits. Now that I have the Kit I will spend some time on them, Bike will be down a couple days anyhow with the Mod. Thanks the site has been a gold mine. Would still love to hook up with some of the IL guys soak up some of that great wisdom on keeping this gem alive for some time. 73's TX we will have to meet up on the air some time.

    YAT!

LOL I just use Photo bucket direct links. They don't take up space on the site and they work great.
  20. In the Amateur Radio world we call guys that have been there done that and willing to pass there wisdom on "Elmer's". I am looking for someone willing to look over my shoulder or I look over his in the Midwest as I do some little things on my 88 VR. I am getting ready to rebuild the carbs and the starter clutch is needing some looking at. I have turned wrenches on all my own stuff for years but this clutch thing has me a little gun shy and my local shop looks at my awesome old bike and makes it clear he does not want anything to do with it. I have not checked with the shop in Morton IL but I have heard he works on the old gems. But I would much rather find someone that can help ME do the work. any direction would be great.
  21. Lol I am with VideoA on this one, easiest way is 3 people on this one. I like it we just have to ride to our buds and have 3 phones/cameras. Thanks for the list, its cool to see all the places hou guys have done. As a newbe here. The hunt would be better but harder if he said the bikes had to be Gen 1s. Hehe
  22. Awesome job , what are we after next.
  23. If you have the whole train that is fine but you have to at least have the engine you and your bike. There is a lot of them in my area. http://www.wheelsotime.org is a Museum up the hill from me, as well as some playgrounds in the area. Have fun with it and in the spirit of the game, Get out and ride. I have just got back into riding, My youngest is now 15 and I stopped riding when she was 5. I was coming home from Grand View Dr after getting that shot and I saw a huge flock of cranes riding the wind. I would have missed it if I was in a car. I love being back on 2 wheels and seeing and smelling things. http://i120.photobucket.com/albums/o190/techee28714/Oldandno.jpg
