  1. ok so yesterday i pulled the air box and cleaned the main air jets on the carbs 2 of them were fairly gummed up. as soon as i find a screwdriver small enough i'll clean the idle air jets. (yay i get to buy more tools) Also I have to confess the #4 slide sticking is my own fault i need to replace it as when i first got the bike running that slide was in 2 pieces and i glued it back together then sanded it down but not smooth enough. i just picked up some sheets of 1000 grit so i'll clean the slide and smooth it to a mirror finnish and see how that effects everything.
  2. Ok so I pulled the airbox back off today and the number four diaphram isn't "fluttering" like the others it appears to be in good shape still but seems to be sticking. As for the carb sync I did it with a length of clear tube and gear oil. at first it was so bad it just sucked all the oil in. got it to the point it didn't realy move either way. i'm going to turn down the idle some more and try the sync again tomorrow. but first i'm gonna pull that diaphram and see whats up with it.
  3. Most speakers produced are marine grade as the major difference is paper cone vers neoprine or poly the stock speakers on my bike were paper cones I swapped them with some Rockford fosgate speakers we had in the shop. I highly recomend a new cdplayer as well as it realy helps with the sound quality and tuning of the sound. these 4" speakers just dont do base notes so its nice to be able to filter out the lower frequencies.
  4. do you remember/know what yamaha boat engine used the same carbs? as i'd love to check my local marine shop for the parts
  5. Whats a boost sensor? I have delt with boost sensors on cars and such but as this is a NA engine I wouldn't have thought this would have one unless it means something different on a motorcycle.
  6. ok well how long should a complete carb teardown and rebuild take? I'm working too jobs and have only a lil "free" time in the evenings to do this kind of thing. I'm trying to take any opportunity to check off all the other lil "easy" things that could fix the issue. I noticed I have a leak in the exhaust the clamp on the exhaust for the rear head is missing its bolt causing exhaust to vent out there a lil bit. this is most likely the cause of my popping from the mufflers. I might be ignorant of this but running rich didn't exactly seem like the carbs were still gummed up and i have run a healthy ammount of sea foam through the fuel system. I kinda figured if it runs rich that the carbs must be free of debris and that my issue is not getting enough air or poor spark. I recently replaced the plugs but not the wires. i'm looking at replacing the plugs again as when we tried to adjust the idle I was mistaken and adjusted the sync screw instead now i've done a farm boy carb synch myself till i can get it into the dealer. but i figure all the time running with the sync so terribly screwed up the plugs are probly fouled again. so i may have just answered my own question. I have one friend up here who works on bikes but he works just about as much as i do so its hard to get the time to grab him long enough to do the carbs as he said the bike would probly be down for a weekend to do it right. Sorry I'm probly getting a lil annoying with this issue but this seems to have gotten the best mix of solutions as it is very easy to say rebuild the carbs, and it was an solution that I had already though of and expected I would have to do. I have gotten a few ideas i'll be looking into IE Checking the carb air vents/over flow hoses for obstructions, visualy inspect the needle tips, and measuring the resistance on the plug caps be sure they are ok. once I have all my bases coverd and the issue is still there then I will resolve to deal with the poor MPG untill winter when we do a full tear down on the bike. Ok so this was a long post and i'll shut up now
  7. ok well it shouldn't need to be rejetted since its the stock jets what would anyone recomend i do to remmedy this issue? think its not good spark? new plug wires and such?
  8. you can get an HID kit for the bike which puts out more and cleaner light then any halogen bulb can produce. looking at around $150 for the bulb and balast
  9. ok well i have my carbs synched now and i've adjusted the idle but the bike is still getting poor MPG and still seems to have a lower top speed. is thier any way to lean out the Air fuel mixture? or is that what the idle screw does?
  10. Cool thats just about perfect, is it common to adjust the idle after its been sitting? after running continuing to use seafoam every other tank it should clean the carbs out a bit more would i have to adjust the idle back down. as my idle is a bit high now but was around 1000 rpms when i first got it on the road now its around 1200-1400 rpms. i guess the question is have any of you had adjust your idle on say a seasonal baisis?
  11. is it in a low enough position that it can be adjusted with the air box still on or will i need to take stuff off the bike?
  12. Does anyone have or can they take a better pic of the idle adjust screw on the first gen so I can adjust my idle before i sync my carbs. the tech library has a very fuzzy close up pic of it but I cant realy tell where its located any help is much appreciated as I realy need to get my my mpg and hop up to where its supposed to be. as it turns out when i was trying adjust my idle before my budy got the idle up by turning up all the sync screws so my bike is running all kinds of wierd
  13. Ok I was just checking this out http://www.venturers.org/Tech_Library/index.php?action=article&cat_id=002010&id=166 and from what i've seen i know why the bike is burning gas like a fat man at a chilli cook off. in our persuit to get the idle right I think i turned the wrong screw and threw off the synch. i'll be investigating this further and i'll try and get intouch with my buddy who works on bikes see what kinda timeframe and how many beers i'll need to get the job done
  14. ok this might be obvious but is it possible to synch the carbs still in the bike or do i need to pull em out? sorry I guess I still dont realy know how one synchs the carbs.
  15. And what do i do with this piece of clear vinyl tubing? sorry but there is still alot i'm ignorant of when it comes to motorcycle repair.
  16. Ok inspected all 4 slides repaired one of them as it was cracked, honestly not sure how to do a compresion test or carb synce, spark is strong. The bike was not modified by previouse owner (my father isn't much for changing stuff) so the needles and jest are stock as well as everything ellse on the bike. I put the air filters on there myself as it added some get up and go on my old ninja i had been working on till i got the venture. I'll go back and look at the air box though I might not have the breather tube hooked back on the box as I cant remember fighting with it and it doesn't seem like something that would just go back on easly. how much would a local yama dealer charge for carb synch and compression test do you think?
  17. That was the other day it was a lil warm but nothing major it was all highway speeds (5th gear 75mph) for the most part with about 10 miles intown on the 90 mile trip from work and back. I just feel with the bike running so smooth that it has to be some way of leaning out the A/F mix to burn less gas and produce more HP cause it is a lil bogged down at higher speeds 75 in 5th is about all she can do
  18. I am back to the stock airbox and running much smoother now, I was running sea foam in every other tank full, and the diaphram is not sticking any longer, checked it right before putting the stock airbox back on.Plugs were replaced after i had been running the seafoam for a week or so. I'd normaly just wait and see as the bike had been sitting for 6 years but 24mpg is getting pricy
  19. plugs are brand new had to replace them as the old ones were fouled. I guess I can replace the plug wires now too.
  20. ok my 84 venture royale is running realy rich. you can smell the raw fuel when its running and mileage is down under 30 MPG. I've been running seafoam through it every other tankfull but it hasn't effected the MPG to much if at all. bike is running great aside from that. I love the bike but currently its costing me more then driveing my car. any idea where i can adjust how much fuel is being dumped into the engine or what ellse I should be doing to improve my MPG issue?
  21. looking at this and its listed for 86-91 ventures but how different is the 86 front fender from the 84? http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/86-91-YAMAHA-VENTURE-ROYALE-CHROME-FENDER-EMBLEM_W0QQitemZ230157714885QQihZ013QQcategoryZ10066QQssPageNameZWDVWQQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem
  22. Has anyone ever tried an actual "Air Bag" suspension on one of these bikes? my buddy has a Bagged 96 ranger he can lay frame i'm not looking for anything that extreme but it would be kinda cool to get rid of the side stand and centerstand and just have the bike drop down to a frame stand of somesort.... just my idea but i usualy have some wierd ideas.
  23. ok well part of it is probly my own fault i've been running without the stock airbox for a bit now and it gets a lil more heat up there. put the stock box back in again, but again none of the fuses are held all that securely they seem to rattle around a bit and if the bike wouldn't start i'd just press on the top of the fuse box slightly and it would start right back up. I tried to tighten the contacts but the just snapped off. I have to replace the fuse box anyway now. the excess heat seems to be due to the "loose" connection of the fuses in the fuse box none of the wire gets above ambient temp aside from right at the fuse box.
  24. it sounds like an update to the fuse system on my bike is probly in order just as well since i never like those glass tube fuses myself time to upgrade to something a lil more modern
  25. kinda what i figured just wanted to know if its something on the bike causing it or if its just common. I had one of the fuse holders finnaly snap last night on my way home but i keep pieces of wire with gator clips on em so i could bypass the fuse on that one so i could get it home
