Cooper tire just announced they are closing the Albany plant. 1300 people will lose their job.

The vrod is the bastard bike of harley. Many harley riders call it a water buffalo.
-
That is interesting. Harely dealers are closing left and right. Was on a Harley web site last week and about 6 harley dealerships were mentioned that are closing. Many more are on the verge.

The last time a yamaha factory rep looked at my bike when I was having rear end problems he said to use moly 60 lithium grease. His personal favorite is honda moly 60. There is a very good article about greasing shaft drive motorcyles at www.calsci.com/motorcycleinfo/Shaft.html

The best thing to do to keep from scratching your windshield is to soak a towel with warm water and put it on the windshield for 5 minutes. When you remove the towel most of the bugs will be gone. You might have to wipe the shield with the towel a little to get the remaining bugs. Then squeeze the water out of the towel on the shield. You can then use any wax or cleaner to finish cleaning the shield. I have used pledge, car wax, honda spray cleaner and novus spray cleaner. All worked ok but the novus seems to leave a brighter shine. You can use rainx on a clearview shield. I have a clearview but can't bring myself to use rainx on it. Never use a paper towel to clean the shield.

That was funny but so true. It reminded me of the time years ago that I took flying lessons. We were in ground school going over the procedures for flying at night. The instructor said, "Here's what you do if you are flying at night and your engine fails." "Wait until you get down to about 500 feet and then turn on your landing lights." "If you don't like what you see, turn them off." OK.

I learned how to fix Ymaha rear end whine
ediddy replied to JerryK's topic in Royal Star Venture Tech Talk ('99 - '13)
Hey JerryK, You are right. Sometime what people think is a clutch basket problem can be the rear end. I starting getting the whine and chirp in my 05 and got the dealer to replace the clutch basket. The whine went completely away. A few thousand miles later I started getting a whine which progressed to a scream. It sounded just like the whine I got before the clutch basket was changed. I left my bike at the dealer and asked them if they would try another clutch basket. The dealer called the next day and said that the pinion gear in the rear end was worn out. I had approx 5000 miles on the rear end. Yamaha replaced the rear diff under warranty and bike was quiet again. Long story short I am on the fifth rear end. The first five were lasting approx 5000 miles. A factory rep from yamaha looked at my bike twice and said he couldn't understand why the rear ends were going bad. I talked to a regional service manager with yamaha and he said there was a time when they were getting defective rear ends from the factory. The third time a different factory rep looked at my bike and said several factory reps from different parts of the country had found that the ring gear in some of the rear diffs was too tight. I now have approx 10,000 miles on the fifth rear diff and all seems ok. I did have a clutch basket problem but sometime there can be a rear diff problem. -
I talked to a kawasaki dealer a few months ago who had just gotten back from the dealer's meeting. Said kawasaki won't put the new voyager into production until January and will be on the showroom in April. Kawasaki didn't disclose what the msrp would be.

I have been looking at trailers for over a year and if I had to make a decision today I would buy the aluma. Some of my goldwing friends have traliers and most of them have the aluma. They didn't go with a fiberglass trailer because they say sometimes the fiberglass will crack but the aluma won't.

Another interesting article on msn today. Last year there was an msn article about harley's stock dropping from $70.00 per share to $59.00 per share. It is now in the $13.00 range and is expected to drop below $10.00 by Dec 19. The article says harley sold bikes to buyers who couldn't afford it with no money down. They now are having trouble getting money to finance bikes. I wonder how the metric bikes are doing?

2009 VMax – Starting point for 3rd Gen Venture???
ediddy replied to Yamaman's topic in Watering Hole
When a dealer says there are rumblings from yamaha they are just speculating. Yamaha keeps new bikes top secret and they don't let anyone know what is coming. I heard a lot of speculating from dealers that there wouldn't be a venture in 08. I like to speculate and dream and hope there will be a 3rd generation venture, but no one will know until it is introduced by yamaha. In a previous discussion before the 08 was introduced someone on this site talked to someone with yamaha USA and were told they would be pleasantly surprised with the changes on the 08. It didn't happen.- 21 replies

I have posted this before. The last time I was at Tallahassee Powersports there was a new guy there from Wisconsin. He worked at a yamaha dealership for 14 years and said he went to many yamaha dealer meetings. He said his experience with yamaha was that they don't listen to dealers and couldn't care less about what they say. He said yamaha makes a good product but they do what they want to do and don't listen to anyone else. I recently talked to a Kawasaki dealer in Thomasville, Georgia that raced motorcycles until two years ago and is very knowledgeable about all motorcycles. He said Kawasaki listens to suggestions from their dealers and has implemented changes requested by their dealers. He had just returned from their dealer meeting where they asked for the dealers opinion about the new touring bike and if there was anything they would change about the bike. I would be inclined to agree with the guy at the yamaha dealership. I also don't think yamaha cares about this web site. I have mentioned this site to yamaha when I have called the headquarters in California and to district people with yamaha. They act like they don't hear me.

Not sure where to post this to get the most traffic
ediddy replied to jkt69's topic in Watering Hole
Hey jkt69, I read in your personal information that you like to ride 2up all day. You will have to change that riding a street glide. Your passenger won't be able to stand it all day. An ultra classic yes, but not a street glide. -
Quick Release saddlebags
ediddy replied to 2Whlsrollin's topic in Royal Star Venture Tech Talk ('99 - '13)
I had the same thing happen. I used a dremel tool and ground the head of the bolt off and the saddlebag came right off. -
Big Scare on Halloween - Blown Tire - Long Story
ediddy replied to RedRider's topic in Watering Hole
Hey RedRider, Glad you didn't get hurt. Not to say you did but I never stretch tires. Three weeks ago my wife and I rode to Virginia to the Maryland state line and then went over to West Virginia. We rode over 1400 miles. I have avon venoms and I had almost 10,000 miles on them and the tread was still good. I believe I could have gotten 14,000 to 15,000 miles out of them but with us going on a long trip riding two up loaded with luggage I put new avons on before we left. If I was riding by myself and would have rode with the old tires but with my wife on back I went with new tires. I don't want to take any chances to just to save $150.00. Even with new tires I know that I still could have a blowout. I'm saying you were trying to save money by not buying new tires but that I'm not going to take a chance. -
Hey Snarley Bill, You had a 305 scrambler? I had one when I was in high school. I think it was a 1967 year model. I loved that bike. It was metallic bronze. I took the piece off the pipes where the two pipes came into one. I just had 2 single pipes. The back fender was bobbed. It was a bad bike until a girl turned left in front of me one day. I hit the car behind the rear window and rolled over on the trunk and fell on the pavement. I was lucky I didn't get killed or hurt rear bad but it totaled the bike. It scared my dad so bad that he wouldn't let me get another motorcycle. It was about 15 years later before I got another bike.

Aerostich has an intercom system adpater #3900 that reduces your standard intercom to a 3.5mm stero plug for use with earbuds and earspeakers. Anyone tried this or no if it works? Thanks.

Side bags removal...
ediddy replied to wild_thing's topic in Royal Star Venture Tech Talk ('99 - '13)
I had the same thing happen. After a service the dealer tightened one of the bolts so much that it stripped out when I tried to remove it. I tried everthing including the easy out bit. It didn't work. I finally had to take my dremel tool with a cutting wheel and grind until I cut the head of the bolt off. I made a set of bolts where you can remove the bags by hand. There is a thread on this site that tells where you can order the bolts and make a set that can removed by hand without a wrench. I was on ebay the other day and put in a search for yamaha venture and there is someone on there that makes the bolts and you can order from them. -
The bearings could be shot, but I would have to see it to believe it.
-
Got mine from JC Whitney. When I ordered it in 2006 I think it was $4.95. I think the last time I looked it had gone up a little.

Hey petekadish, I was so glad to read what you had to say about insurance. Finally, someone gets it. I wish I could take you with me a few weeks to talk to people about their insurance. It always amazes me that people will spend $20,000 or more for a bike and then spend hours shopping around to save $30.00 per year on their insurance without any regard to the coverage. Last week I talked to a guy that had just bought a new sportster and I asked him if I could quote his insurance. He didn't want to talk to me but as he drove away he said I'm with GEICO but if you can save me some money I will talke to you. I wanted to shake him and say do you know if you have the coverage you need. No one cares until they have a claim and then they want everything covered. I used to speak up on this site when the subject came up but I don't even waste my time anymore. You mentioned that you have Foremost. They are a quality company and I have never had anyone complain about claim service with them. A friend of mine that has a venture had lightning strike his shop and it completely burned his venture. He was insured with foremost, not with me though, and said foremost asked what he thought his bike was worth. He gave him a figure and said they wrote him a check. He said he wouldn't consider another company. Of course you can probabley get "a better rate" with another company but you won't get the service they offer.

Don't know anything about the area but if you want, I will call yamaha roadside assistance and ask them the nearest dealer that might can help. If you want to do this give me an exact location where you're at and I will call. You can email me @ ehall@albanyinsuranceservices.com or call toll free @ 877-809-5958. Good luck. Eddie Hall

Just got in from trip to Virginia. Left Georgia wednesday afternoon and rode to Virginia almost to Maryland and then went across to West Virginia. Stayed off the parkway and rode other roads. I think we rode highway 220 that was so beautiful. The trees and leaves are the most beautiful I've ever seen. I thought the scenery in the North Carolina mountains was beautiful but Virginia is awesome. Gas was plentiful and much lower than Georgia. I think we filled up in Wythville Virginia this morning for $2.49 per gallon. Not sure of the spelling of Wythville.

It never ceases to amaze me at what dealers will say about warranty work. Last sunday I removed the chrome piece below the windshield to see if any of the bolts had worked loose after reading where someone had their clearview shield blow off. There are two screws on each side of the faring that hold this peice on. The left side was completely broken off so the screw isn't doing any good going into the faring. I was at my dealer having new tires installed and I asked the service manager if he would contact yamaha and ask if they would replace this part. He said he didn't have to contact yamaha and would get a replacement. He said warranty work or parts replacement under $750.00 doesn't have to be OK'd by yamaha. The dealer has the authority to do it as long it is obvious it wasn't abuse by the customer. I wonder how some dealers have enough sense to get a dealership. They act like the money is coming out of their pocket.
