I have a 1999 RSTD. I recently removed the K&N style filters from the 28 mm carbs and replaced them with a stock air box and filter. Why? Because I was tired of the vibrating off not to mention the smell of raw fuel even when cruising around 45 to 50 mph.
What I did;
Removed the K&N filters including the filter on the crankcase vent tube.
Installed a new filter in the air box, connected the crank case vent and the drip tube to the box, set the box over the carbs and seated the boots, then tightened, the rubber gas line cracked so I cut off the end and reattached to the tank. When it was all buttoned up I started it and let it run for a bit.
After all connections and letting run for a bit I took it out for a drive to find that under heavy acceleration and the rpms get up there the engine bogs down to the point it feels like it will stall if I don't let up. Under slower acceleration it will get to about 60 or 65 before it starts to bog down again. And it happens in every gear if accelerating hard.
I am trying to determine how to adjust the mixture screws lean it out a bit see if that's it or not.
Any help would be great, dealer estimates $700 to figure t out and fix.
Thank you
