Condolences to you and your friends family. Prayers away!

They've loosened up the eligibility req'ts some and there is (at least for this year) a "hardship" provision because of either job losses big income changes, etc. Worth checking into, even if there's no joy at the end!

According to the forms, if you opt not to give financial data, you fall into priority group 8([G] I think it is) which is currently not eligible to access the system. (which really chaps me anyway, why does any veteran have to "qualify"? A DD-214 in hand should be sufficient.) I'm waiting on a copy of my med records as we speak. when in hand the rep is going to go over them and see if there's anything there, coupled to current conditions that would enable me to go the disability route. If that works out, then the income thing is irrelevant as far as being able to access the system. It will affect copays, but as previously stated..that I can live with.

Right this instant, I cannot put into words the fury I feel. My other thread is seeking info. on a VA health benefit question. I was doing some additional searching when I came upon this! It infuriates me to even think about it. I will paste the 1st sentence of an article from the CNN.com website and you judge for your self! WASHINGTON (CNN) -- Veterans Affairs Secretary Eric Shinseki confirmed Tuesday that the Obama administration is considering a controversial plan to make veterans pay for treatment of service-related injuries with private insurance. It is one thing to have disdain for our military. It is something else to be SO callous and demeaning as to even allow a milisecond of thought to occur where this "plan" would even remotely be considered! It does not matter in the least, that this "plan" probably would get shot down before it left the hanger. What matters is that it was considered at ALL!! How dare they! There is NO reasonable explanation acceptable for such an overt slap in the face of our brave servicemen and women. I am in tears as I write this. HOW can this come from any commander in chief of this country??? HOW? Don, do whatever you have to do. delete it, delete me. Whatever! We have veterans here and some of those have family (veterans) serving. They deserve to know!

I submitted paperwork today to try to get on VA health & medical coverage. Since the eligibility is being relaxed (slightly) and our income is down from last year, the Rep. thinks there is a good shot of my getting on the system based on the numbers. The question that neither the rep. nor the patient advocate I spoke with could answer was this: If I'm able to qualify and get on the VA system now, what happens if our income goes back up (especially if it goes up a lot)? Will the VA disqualify me from the system...ie.. will they kick me out because of it?????? They said they had never heard of it ever happening and didn't believe that they would. I said I sure would like to see that in writing some where! I know that the co-pays would change and I would gladly pay them, as long as I can still be covered. My problem is I need absolute confirmation that would be the case. I could not give up my existing (expensive) health insurance coverage otherwise; Once I get off of it there won't be any getting back on and I have to have coverage. I'm still a couple of years out for social security (assuming it's still there, when I get there) So, my Venturerider friends, if you know with some level of certainty, the answer, please let me know. If you know a reg. reference I can go to and look it up, that would be good, too! I've been looking, but no joy as yet. Thanks for any assist or info.

Somehow, I think NOT!!

I quit trading stocks after '87! Don't get me wrong! I made money, just not consistently enough for my liking AND it took an inordinate amount of time to do it right. Turning my $$ over to some else to do it for me (like what happens in a 401k) just seems wrong to me. Plus, most of the brokers I know are simply salesmen rehashing the days corporate memo (unless you deal with the main guy, which rarely happens) and contractually have to take their marching orders from the main office and must use their in-house recommendations. Some of THOSE guys have track records that leave much to be desired. Whatever! I am strictly FOREX (currency) trading now. There are the longer term position trades and the shorter term day trades, which I like because it keeps me sharp and it's fun (and you can make a good living at it). And no it is NOT risky unless you just go in blindly flailing or trading with your emotions. If I may.......Stocks are not really as market driven as most believe (that's one reason they call those guys market makers). The prices are driven and to an extent directed by the chairs on the exchange. (they can & do run the prices up or down at will to take out the small potatoes guys like you and me for their profit....I've seen it & experienced it) What industry, product or service segment, where's the demand, who's the principals, what's the demographic, ad nauseum! Too many personalities involved that keep you a day behind and a buck short. To actually make money you have to be much more of a student than most people are willing to be and consequently listen to the talking heads opining via the brokerage houses or the fund managers (or TV). Get caught on the wrong side of a stock trade and you can be riding until the horse collapses. You can't get out fast enough, if at all! In my experience, the average investor knows enough to be dangerous and with some exceptions is exactly on the opposite side of the trade from the speculator (who is the one that will really makes the money.....He's selling when you're getting ready to buy & vice versa). I'm not crackin' on anyone who wants to work stocks, I just find them too complicated and unpredictable because of all the variables & personalities. My wife has her 401k through the company and with the matching funds & the ability to move things around relatively quickly, it's ok! I still try to ride herd on it and have her tweak it when needed. She didn't listen to me back in '87 and lost a ton; now she's more inclined to listen. (wife listening...now there's a concept! ) With currencies, it's the currency of course, the country of origin, their central bank authority and very few others. The actions taken by them are of necessity, by and large, conservative (because it's their money). Analysis is pretty straight forward. Trading is going on 24/7, although U.S. brokers generally shut down Friday afternoon and pick up again Sunday evening. Trade execution is virtually instantaneous and with concerted learning effort expended one can get up to speed in relative short order. A lot of the time you can be in & out of the days trading in a couple of hours (sometimes just a few minutes and you're done for the day if you want to be). There are some good training materials out there and some good courses if a person does a bit of due diligence. The trades are there.. long, short, scalping if you have a mind to. Anyway, I once again got a mite long in my response and it wasn't quite on topic to answer your question, Don. Sorry about that. Didn't intend to make a ad for forex trading. That's my fifty cents worth, just the same.

Reminds me of a used vehicle dealer here. He has a lot full of about 40 or so pick up trucks and SUVs. When the economy started going in the tank and gas prices were still high, I was having a cup of coffee with a friend. Just making smalltalk, I commented that I wouldn't want to be that guy sitting on all that inventory, given the conditions. He intimated that he doubts the guy could care less if sells a truck or not. His "other" business is where he made his money.....if you know what I mean!!!

buddy of mine has a trailblazerwith the 5 cyl. In & out of the shop something like 8 times. They finally gave him a new vehicle. You don't want to know what he had to say about the motor, GM, Chevy, or the dealer, for that matter!!! Not a happy camper.

Amen to that!

Night riding on the interstates -- what's the big deal?

Best of luck with the surgery. I'll send a special smoke signal up to the Big Chief! -
It looks like the black bikefest in Atlantic Beach may be history, after all! AB city council succumbed to pressure from MB and offers of financial help from surrounding municipalities (they really have some major money problems in AB) and agreed to kill their rally as a condition of getting the assistance. I got the impression that they don't necessarily like it, but felt it was the only way to try to save the town. (They went in the hole bigtime on their rally....the town is just not big enough to support that big of an event and consequently, they couldn't collect enough in fees, etc. to make it work.) Regarding mm482's post (actually the page the link is for)....The Harley-Davidson Dealers Association did originate the MB rally, but they haven't been involved in any significant way for years. I agree with MB H-D when they say IT IS DISINGENUOUS FOR THE H-D DEALERS ASSOCIATION TO CLAIM THE RALLY MYRTLE BEACH IS OVER BECAUSE THEY'RE GOING TO NEW BERN, NC. MB Harley-Davidson has been the power behind the rally and is going to continue with plans for the rally! There won't be as many vendors this year, partly because of the hooplah and partly because of the economy and most of those vendors will be setting up outside of MB city limits. I think that will change when the dust settles and the economy turns the corner. It probably will never again be as big as it was, but I don't see it going the way of the conastoga, either. Truth be known, a smaller, saner rally just might be what the Doctor ordered.
