While not that particular brand, I have owned 2 of these over the years. First one I used mostly for tailgating at college football games. It was a rather large one and ended up selling it and got a smaller one for my garage 4 or 5 years ago. They work pretty good. Need plenty of ventilation. I usually keep my garage door about halfway up when using it. and just have it pointed in the general direction I am working. I have had it running as long as 8 or 10 hours in a day and haven't passed out yet. Mine will go maybe 12 hours or so on a filled 30lb tank.

Ha. I'm only 39 (going on 24). Back in my younger days it was bass boats. Folks would winterize theirs. I just kept on fishing those tournaments. Lower unit (foot) won't freeze if it's underwater. And yeah, I miss the smell of those 2 cycle engines as well. Going back even further in life, it was dirt bikes.

That's how you winterize your bike. Just crank 'er up every few days to keep the juices flowin. Saturday, it was a nice 60 degrees here, then turned off cold yesterday as those northward winds blew. Yesterday high was in the 30s, may get to the 40s today. But all in all, I'm glad I am not in Michigan during this cold snap. Spent a couple years in the Bering Sea, and have felt the cold. Not a fan. I am a July/August 95 degree kind of guy these days. BUT, I do get out and ride in 30 and 40 degree weather as long as the sun is shining.

In Muskegon today, you may want to consider 10w oil. Or, just staying at home. Brrrrrrrrrrrrr
-
Another thing to note is that the heavier oils will not flow properly thru bearing surfaces, especially on engines with lesser miles. Many of today's automobiles are suggesting 20w oil. In many engine rebuilds, even 10w oil is used for break ins. I agree with you, heavier weight oils are not always better. If you have a high mileage engine that may have excessive clearances in the mains, journals or wrist pins, valve guides, etc, a heavier oil may be necessary, or if you are in extremely hot weather. I am not a big fan of 50w engine oils, especially in a water cooled engine. On the twins, in the summertime, maybe, but it would not be on a new bike for sure. However, I do run 50w in the summertime in classic VW engines. But then again, all the bugs I've owned, and my current 73 convertible, all have fairly high miles for a bug. In the cooler weather, I drop back to 40w.

Many condolences and prayers of comfort for the family. Looks like he lived a good long life and may he rest in peace.

I've also seen several of them advertised in Georgia for 22k range.

Adjusted the valves on my 09 with just under 40k miles a couple months or so back and pretty much same as yours. All the intakes were just out of tolerance on the low end and only 1 cylinder w/exhaust out of tolerance and it was by a fair margin. That was my first crack at adjusting RSV valves and it was much of a learning experience on valve cover removals and using the tool.

Sincerely wish you all the best and safest holidays, and hopes that you are building lasting memories with the thing most important to us all, and that is our family. Merry Christmas to you all from Moody, Alabama.

Christmas Songs, one of my favorites. You got one? Two? 100?
YamahaLarry replied to cowpuc's topic in Watering Hole
I love so many of them, old and new. Very hard to pick a favorite, as many of them bring back special memories of various times of my life. One that brings back very fond memories of when my children were small though is one many of you have may never heard. It has a twist still believing in Santa Claus in the sparkling little eyes under the tree. I think any of us with children will feel the spirit of Christmas in this song. The spirit of love and believing in the certain magic surrounding Christmas. I takes me back to a time of when my children were young and would play this song for them. This was on one of our all time favorite Christmas albums. Randy Owen and Alabama Band, Santa Claus. I encourage all of you with children or grand children, to listen to this one. -
I had issue over a year ago kept blowing headlamp bulbs. Checked voltage and it was over 18 when I revved the engine. Replaced the regulator/rectifier and have not had an issue since. Some people will say you need to replace both rectifier and stator together. I have replaced regulator alone and the stator alone (another bike) in the past and never had an issue in doing so. My bet is on the regulator.

The whine is getting annoying
YamahaLarry replied to Treb's topic in Royal Star Venture Tech Talk ('99 - '13)
Neither of my RSVs whine that loud, especially in 4th. It can be heard, especially in the lower gears, but not that pronounced in the higher gears. -

To 'machine it out', it is typically done with helical cut gears vs the straight cuts. The straight cut noises will vary with different rpm, pressure, base diameters, tooth depth and width, clearances and pressure angles, and obviously lubricants will vary the amount of sound. Straight cuts will pretty much always make a noise, where helical cuts do not. Straight cut gears in transmissions and drives will produce more output, and will not produce as much heat as helical cut. -

That would be great. The whine isn't as bad on the 09 as it is on the 99 RSV and I may try the Yamalube on next oil change. But, I would like to stay with the synthetics in the long haul. I don't to ever really expect for it to go away, but it would be nice to make it less noticeable. Like I said, once I do notice it, then it takes a while to un-notice. My little 4" speakers will only get so loud. -
At 62, I am beginning to think about retirement someday. Maybe in 10 years or so, or unless for some reason I begin failing at my job as a software engineer. I do sit and dream about it at times and wonder what it would be like just to wake up and plan my day minute by minute. But for now, I will continue to dream that I am in your place. Now, go chase the rains, and race the winds, and follow the sunsets. And again, many congrats.

I don't hear my whine, til I hear it, and then I can't unhear it, so I turn up the audio. Does that make sense? While it doesn't bother me a whole lot, I would like it a little quieter at times. The whine is more noticeable on my 99 RSV vs the 09 RSV. I would love to hear others feedback on what brands/weights of oils used to quieten it down a little. I am (have have for several years) running Rotela T6 40w with the MotorKote additive every other oil change. On the 09, the guy I purchased it from was using Mobile 50w. I just feel that 50w oil is too thick and takes a little longer to get disbursed on those cold mornings. So, if you have changed oils due to the whine, what did you end up with? -
No new Star ventures for 2019
YamahaLarry replied to ZOEYDOG's topic in Star Venture and Eluder Tech Talk ( '18 - Present)
IMO, they over priced it. For 27k price range most bikers would rather purchase a new Harley. At least those that I know. -
Sounds pretty much like mine, a 4 cyl Road King with a whine.

I've seen a lot of worn out/burned points in my life, but never any worn that badly in that manner. Surprised it lasted as long as it did.

Wow. Did take it a while to make it's way to these eyes in Alabama. And like you we support our veterans as well and I personally do a lot for childhood cancer. so your story hits home with me. Just last week I lead a ride for Make-A-Wish (and Toys for Tots). We had 97 bikes and joined up with a cruise in style car show. At the end of the day, we filled a truck with toys plus raised over 7K for Make-A-Wish of Alabama. I gotta find my way to Muskegon some day.

but I just came across it on Facebook. They said Muskegon, so I assume this was up in your neck of the woods. The post was made on Nov 29th, but looks much earlier due to the weather, cause I know it's like sub zero weather up there now. https://www.facebook.com/lifeofarider/videos/272355743481387/

RSV woundn't start today
YamahaLarry replied to BlueSky's topic in Royal Star Venture Tech Talk ('99 - '13)
Could be a bad battery, but guess you won't know that til some troubleshooting. Last time I bought a motorcycle battery from Autozone, I had to carry it back for exchange about a month or so later. But, to my surprise, batteries had gone up a good bit in that month and instead of prorated charges on the exchange, I got a prorated credit. Anyhow, I guess the replacement worked out ok. Ended up selling the bike a few months later. I can't recall if it was an AGM though. I will be purchasing a new AGM to put in my 09 RSV very soon from Batteries Plus. -
Recently installed the same ones. Mine were also new pull and a dealership. Love the sound as is and not gonna mess with them.
