  1. The Venture looks good in black.
  2. The sad thing is that if you turn off the fuel valve the fuel in the carbs evaporate if you let it sit for a while and leaves some varnish that can plug the jets. If you leave the fuel valve on, the carbs stay full and the carb is not as likely to plug up. Or at least that was my experience with my old 81 Honda CB900C.
  3. I don't know how the charging system supports all those lights. Idling at a stop light for a good while might kill the battery!
  4. Years ago, 80s, the Firestone stores in Raleigh were really bad for ripping off unknowing car owners. Finally, a newspaper reporter did an undercover operation and blew up their scams. A young woman in the office took her car that had 20k miles on it in for a cheap set of new tires, advertised for $200. They kept calling her back telling her she needed tie rod ends, idler arm, shocks, etc, until the bill was $700. That is when she came to me and told me what was going on. I was known as the car guy. I told her that she didn't need any of those things and demand they put the old stuff back on and pay $200. They offered to reduce the bill by $200 and she went for it. Still ripped her off unmercifully paying $500. Aamco was doing it too. A guy in the office had a bad diaphragm in the modulator on his transmission in his 74 Camaro. Took it to Aamco. They called him and told him they needed to partially disassemble it to diagnose and would cost a minimum of $135. He came to me and described what it was doing and I told him I thought it was the vacuum modulator and a replacement was less than $10 and it just screwed into the side of the trans. He called back and declined their offer. When he went to pick it up, their mechanic told him he would fix it that night at the gas station across the street for $35 and he let the guy do it. If he had agreed to let them "diagnose" it. The next step is to call and say the bad news is your trans needs a rebuild. The good news is that we have a life time nationwide warranty. I met a trans mechanic who worked for Aamco until his conscience wouldn't allow it any more. He said he rebuilt a lot of transmissions that didn't need it. Aamco was so bad that the Attorney Generals of 12 different states got together and went after them. I'm sure it is still going on at a lot of auto shops.
  5. You could have bought a vacation home in FL for $50k in 2009! That place was hit hard with foreclosures.
  6. All depends on what you want to do. If you want to spend weeks or months touring, a motorhome just might be the ticket. I would like to have a small motorhome so I can get into and camp in the national parks. Maybe even a camper for my F150Scab 4x4 would work for me. With a big motorhome, you can't do that. I wish my wife and I were as tough as Cowpuc and Tippy. We could just use the Venture and a tent!
  7. Made it on a rocky road for 17 years the first time. After 16 years of single life, I forgot how crappy it was and married again! Almost 12 years this time and it's getting better instead of worse. Married life is best if you can make it work.
  8. I've heard this many times about a boat! Ha! I bought my first boat in 2007, still have it, still love it, a 1998 18' Boston Whaler split console with a 99 Yamaha OX66 2 stroke 150 on the back! I too would love to have a motorhome but my wife is still working and probably will continue to do so, so I can't justify getting one now.
  9. Just a thought. Check your car battery just to try to be sure your volt meter is working properly. Some meters will be incorrect if the battery in the meter isn't strong. In the case I'm thinking about my meter read high with a weak battery, so that is probably not an issue. It read a car battery at 18 volts! Ha!
  10. I wish the best for you. We really appreciate your incredible posts about your amazing adventures! We wait with anticipation for your next post! Gotta get well so you will have many new adventures to post about this summer!
  11. When I completed my 3yr, 7 month, 18 day job at the Turkey Point Nuclear Power Plant close to Miami(August 29, 2013), the job required me to work 6 12s for 14 months towards the end. I was too tired to make myself exercise and I was eating too much and developed an irregular heartbeat especially towards the end of my work shift when I was tired. After the job ended, I lost 20 lbs and got back on my exercise program which includes a rapid 50 minute walk around the subdivision 3 times a week. The irregular heartbeat went away and I feel great. I am 70 yrs old now. Those walks are critical for me. They keep my cholesterol in check. I do take BP meds.
  12. Congratulations Jeff, Hang in there! Keep improving! I hope to meet you in person. Just looked at your profile and we have the same birthday.
  13. For some reason I can't open the photos any more, just the videos.
  14. $2.149 here today. What Saudi Arabia is trying to do is make some of fracking go away because the current price wont' support fracking. Once a few of the smaller companies go out of business, then the USA production will drop and Saudi will lower their production and prices will go back up. I've also read the it is a conspiracy between the US and Saudi Arabia to cause Iran and Russia budget problems. Venezuela going bankrupt is a bonus! After Russia quit giving money to Cuba, Venezuela helped them. Now Venezuela can't afford to help Cuba. So that is part of the thaw between Cuba and the USA.
  15. Congratulations! I'd say 72 is a good age to retire. You never have enough money to retire. You could always use more for that motorhome or traveling in style. It's one of those things you just do. I hope to get to the International to meet you in person.
  16. Getting started is always the hardest part. After a couple of days of low calorie eating, the appetite drops dramatically because the body switched over to burning the fat in your body.
  17. I have one and it saved me $80 last spring when my wife and I went out west and visited 4 National Parks. They were charging $20 for two people in a car and we got in free. It also saved me a few bucks when we went to Dry Tortugas a couple years ago. They are still just charging $10 for it.
  18. Now you have your goal to be gold!
  19. Looks very nice! I'm sure you will enjoy it.
  20. The latest Nutrisystem advertisement by the beautiful Marie Osmond says that if you reduce your body weight by 7%, you reduce the likelihood of getting diabetes by 58%!! That's impressive stats.
  21. I bought a 2004 Kawasaki Concours several years ago which is the same type of bike as the FJR (Sport tourer). I was just getting back into riding (rusty skills) and I was 66 or so with less than normal balance. It was very top heavy and I dropped it twice. The second time I tried in vain to keep it up and pinned my right foot under it breaking my second metatarsal. Then being an old fart and sitting at a computer all day, I developed blood clots in that lower leg. I had to take blood thinners for about 4 months. Anyhow, my wife decreed that bike had to go. It took a while to sell it so I continued to ride it (when my wife wasn't around-I was working in FL) and I was liking it more and more all the time. The seat was comfy but the high position of my old legs wasn't the best for me and leaning forward wasn't that much to my liking. The 7 1/2 gallon gas tank gave it a long range and made it more top heavy. I installed a taller windshield and that combined with the rest of the fairing was great weather protection with no buffeting. I would have kept it but I had promised my wife I would sell it because she was too worried about me on that bike. An FJR is much better than the Concours but the same type. I probably would not buy one because of the sitting position, but I do like the way they look. If I was younger, I'm sure I would be interested. Being totally honest, I would have bought a 2001 or later GW of that style when I went looking for a two up tourer but I am too cheap to pay the price. I then looked at the BMW K1200LT and the videos scared me off. I always liked the looks of the 1st gen Venture and that was what I bought. I hope to ride it many miles in the coming year! My little 85 ZN700 is a great bike for short distances and I ride it a lot around town. As an Oh by the way, the guy who bought my 04 concours rode it a lot for a couple of months and traded it in on a new FJR!
  22. If you ever want a BMW K1200LT, watch the above videos. They are what steered me away from one and to the 89 Venture I have now.
  23. LOL, I know what you mean. My wife is still working and I am retired. I love those M-F days of peace and quiet and freedom. Course I have to have dinner prepared when she gets home and maybe some semblance of progress on a project or two.
