  1. Not sure why passing lights in conjunction with high beam would be illegal. After all, if use of the high beam is in order, why would extra light matter? Having been stationed in VA, it would not surprise me that VA has a law against passing lamps. I run my passing lights all the time, except at night when behind several vehicles--their lights help ID foreign objects on the road. I rode for six years in Florida and now in Georgia, and my passing lamps have never been an issue with law enforcement. BTW, the lamps I use in my passing lamps are 70k candle power each @ 37.5 watts each. You can find them at J&P cycles, but you will have to search hard; for some reason they do not show up under their lights menus (at least that was true the last time I looked). My passing lights are aimed to illuminate the road about 100-150 feet in front of me to help me ID road hazards. I'm not trying to light up the horizon. Common sense, however, dictates turning off the passing lamps when behind a police car at night.
  2. Yes; I no longer stretch the limits in curves. I leave plenty of traction reserve for the unexpected. As the rule states, if you can't stop in your sight distance, you are going too fast.
  3. If I mess up and don't have an Amsoil filter, I go with Purolator.
  4. I agree with the others re lugging the engine. Another thing to check is the carb sync. When my carbs are out of sync the up-hill vibration is worse than when the carbs are in sync.
  5. A few years ago I put on an 80-series rear tire because the tires I had ordered did not arrive in time to change out for a vacation trip. The 80-series tire only lasted about 10k miles (vs. 16-18k I get with the Metzlers) and the speedometer and odometer error almost doubled. I suspect a 70- or 60-series tire will be worse.
  6. I can't speak to the Avons, but anytime my tires are close to minimum tread depth, I replace them before a road trip. For me, it is not just a question of being able to make the trip before the tread is gone, but having new rubber might keep something from puncturing all the way through the tire. A few years back I removed a small screw from the rear tire that went in at an angle without puncturing the tire.
  7. The most likely cause is too much oil in the crankcase. If you fill to the book's spec (3.9 qt. ?) / top mark at the oil sight glass, oil will drip from the bottom hose(s). Nothing to worry about. On subsequent oil changes, add oil until just at or slightly above the mid point between the low and high marks for the oil level.
  8. Seven years ago, I used the spray type white lithium grease on my latch mecanisms and they are still easy to operate. One would think mother Yamaha/dealer would lube the latches when the bag latches are installed...
  9. Yep, that's the one I installed just before a recent riding vacation. It did make a difference as I could see motorists start to pull out in front of me, then decide to wait (not all, but most). I procrastenated several years in buying a headlight modulator ($$), but decided the life of me and the wife was worth much more than $118.
  10. I have to go on reserve right at 4.5 gallons too. According to a long distance rider I know who does it on a RSV, there is approximately 1/2 gallon of unuseable fuel in the tank. He knows from experience.
  11. I think the going rate is whatever the raper can get. I can't help but wonder how some of these dealers stay in business.
  12. If you can't stop in the distance you can see without crashing, you're going too fast.
  13. For what it may be worth: I installed my passing lamps per the provided instructions, and after the 2nd blown fuse, located the weak point. The provided wiring, unless added protection is applied where the wires enter the slot of the turn signal / lamp assemby, will chafe until the insulation wears through. My fix was to drill out the slot a bit to accomdate the extra thickness of the heat shrink tubing I put on the wires where they pass through the slot. I also put the passing lamps on their own circuit via relay to the battery.
  14. I wrapped all those wires with electrical tape that made it a fairly stiff bundle and made sure it was routed pretty much centered. It's been more than 80k miles and I haven't had a problem with it.
  15. My cool/cold weather gear is grey/black. This vest looks like a good investment. Thanks for reporting this!
  16. I don't have a scientific answer for you, but I don't see where different tread patterns would matter. The primary no-no is using a front or rear tire in a position it is not designed for, i.e., rear tire mounted on the front. IMHO, if the rear tire is in good condition with plenty of tread for the ride, I'd go for it.
  17. I don't know how the 1st Gens are designed re passenger seat, but I fabricated a 3/4" marine plywood platform that mounts to the passenger grab rails after the seat is removed. A 3-1/2 gallon Tourtank mounts to it and holds three gallons with the bike on the sidestand. I bought the Tourtank because all the plumbing and hardware, except mounting bolts, are part of the package.
