I did the shotgun method to get it so it will run without the choke and I could give it throttle. It sat for over a year. I was almost out of gas when it was sitting. I have added new fuel and some additives (chemtool and fuel system cleaner) I am going to check the spark tomorrow to make sure I am sparking on all 4. If that is the case, I will continue to run it until it clears up. I will also sync my carbs tomorrow and hopefully make some progress.

New diaphragms are in. The bike is still running like crud. It is surging and popping like crazy. I ordered a bike spark detector because my car one has to be held to use on bikes and that hurts. It should be here today. I will make sure I have spark, clean all my plugs again go from there. I also need to sync the carbs still, I have just been way to busy with getting back to work after my deployment and 40+ days off.
-
It did not. It continued to surge and seem like it was misfiring. My diaphragms will be in on Monday and then I will adjust the carbs and smooth her out.
-
Once I get it running smoothly again I plan to do the oil, filter and plugs again after 1 or 2 tanks of gas.
-
I just changed them before I took off for my test ride. I hope they did not foul backing out of my driveway. I will change them again if I cannot get the problem cleared up.
-
Got it to idle without the choke, and I can rev it up. When I went for a ride, it did some bad surging and erratic acceleration. I know a small part of that could be due to my diaphragms being full of holes and tears. I will play with the carb set up tomorrow and sync the carbs. See if I can't get her accelerating and running smoothly before the diaphragms arrive.

I am getting the new diaphragms from a seller on eBay that I found in another thread on this forum. Unfortunately, he does not have a buy it now option so I have to wait 3 days and 9 hours just for the auction to end. Oh well, tomorrow I will tear my carbs apart and give them a very thorough cleaning so I can just slap the new diaphragms in and ride when they get here.
-
I found part of my problem. All of my diaphragms have small holes or tears in them. I cleaned well with the mixture screws still in. I am going to order 4 new diaphragms and then pull all the mixture screws out when I am installing the new diaphragms. I also got an oil filter, oil, plugs, and rear end oil. She should be good to before the end of October. I also drained the bowls, but I did not tend to the floats yet. I was racing daylight. I will track down a syringe and unstick the floats when I am replacing the diaphragms too. When I tried to give the bike some throttle, the pistons spazed out instead of opening smoothly. I am guessing the tears are to blame for that. On the upside I got another call from someone interested in my 2001 RSV. That will keep me working diligently on my 84.

I can't give it any throttle right now. I think another carb cleaning/blow out will help. then I will get pick up some chem tech and abuse the bike mercilessly. Don't worry she enjoys the abuse, what she doesn't like is being neglected.
-
The 84 is not running right. she will start and run with the choke wide open, but will die when I close the choke. I also cannot apply the throttle at all with out the bike dying. I am going to pull the air box tomorrow and hit it with another can of carb cleaner and the air compressor. If you have any other tips or tricks, please send them this way.

This bike has been parked for 1 1/2 years, the battery died and then I got deployed for 12 months. I had this same problem with my 2001 when I first got it, so I cleaned the heck out of the carbs. I did that 2 days ago to the 84. It does have some bad gas in the tank (not even enough to register 1 bar on the fuel gauge). I put 2 gallons of 89 octane in there with some fuel system cleaner. It smokes like coal burning train and will not let me take the choke off, even if I wait for the bike to warm up and register some heat on the temp gauge. It differs from my 2001 because it will not let me apply any throttle. Any tips or tricks would be greatly appreciated. I am going to buy another can of carb cleaner tomorrow and hit them again.

http://i80.photobucket.com/albums/j169/coffeyR6/Mobile%20Uploads/PHOTO_20161016_205054.jpg I have not touched the bike in well over a year due to a dead battery. A few days ago, I purchased a new battery and went to start the bike. I tried and tried and tried, then decided it may need some new gas to mix with that old junk. Stabil is not a miracle worker. So I dismount Genesis (the bike) and realize I am standing in a pool of gas. I turn the key on and try and start it a few more times to see where the gas is coming from. It appears to be below the tank. While I am ripping this bike apart, I notice that it is a very simple bike to tear down and everything makes sense about it. It was an enjoyable experience. After tearing it down i realize that it is just pouring gas out the overflow tubes because my carbs are dirtier than current political campaigns. So after I put most of a can of carb cleaner in the carbs and in my eye (don't do that; it hurts), I poured some seafoam down there for the night and will get it some fresh gas in the AM and she will be back on the road. I also had to buy a new battery for my 01 today. Who would have thought my piece of junk 87 Suburban would be my reliable vehicle. Back to my main point though, this bike does not make an easy chop or Bob.

Dale, you will not only see me but you will see, my oldest boy, and my 84 (Genesis). I am going to the next Venture west.

My wife has the mini van covered. So All I have to be able to do is carry most of my kids. The bike took a little time to start. I am getting it registered tomorrow, and then I will run it on the highway for a while after an oil change.

I decided the green one needed to go. I put it on Craigslist and few other local places in Vegas. I put the link in the classified section. Once I sell that and my 1987 Suburban 4X4, I can buy a fuel efficient car that is not a project and worry more about my 84 and my various basses. -Coffey

I arrived back on Friday. Sorry it has taken this long to hop on and say hi, I have been preoccupied with the wife and kids. A year is a long time to be away. I have not been for a ride since I got back because the tags on both of my bikes are expired. I will fix that either friday or next week. Not to worried about it right now. I have decided to sell my green bike (2001 RSV) for a few reasons. 1. I do not need to worry about moving 2 bikes while in the military 2. With a wife and 4 kids I do not get a whole lot of riding time 3. I will never give Genesis (84 Venture) the proper love as long as I have the green one If you are interested, watch the classified section. I will probably get it posted sometime next week after I get a little more settled. Then watch for pictures of the complete tear down and rebuild of the 84. If anyone is in the Las Vegas area and wants to meet up for some food or ice cream, hit me up. -Coffey

I like the idea of riding around on beat up old Yamahas and sleeping in tents. That is one of the many things I cannot wait to get home to. I need to get my 84 completely road worthy so I can sale my green bike (exodus). I haven't fully decided on that course of action yet, but it will probably happen.

It has been a long time since I have been on here. I guess when you are across the world from your bike, you forget to jump on the forum. My subscription had actually lapsed, luckily Cowpuc mentioned me in a post and I got an email to remind me to come visit. I have been in country now 306 days. That means I have roughly 58 days left. I have traveled extensively since I have been here; I am actually in the passenger terminal right now waiting on air trans to another location. When I am not on the road, I run the Audio Visual section for the base chapel or I play bass guitar for them. When I am not working or practicing with the worship team, I am doing school work. I finished out my associates in electronics systems technology before I came out here, and now I am working on my Bachelors in Labor and Employment Relations. I had the bright idea of taking two LER classes at once; lots of reading and work. That is pretty much it from here. I have a lot more to tell some of you, but I will do that at some meets and rallies or over Ice cream if we happen to be in each other's neighborhood. I am just ready to get back to my family. -Coffey

Thank you to everybody for the well wishes. I hope that all of you had a wonderful Christmas and New Year celebration. I pray that this year is abundantly better than the years past, and I pray I get to personally shake all of your hands in 2017. I will be making some rounds at the rallies and meets.

Just got back to read all of this. I must have a blown gasket or have the wrong weight of fluid in my body, my eyes started leaking. That is awesome to hear. I also enjoyed re-reading about your/our trip. I can't wait to get back to Genesis and Exodus. I have a ghost town to go find and a building to track down. and we have a Midnight ride through Death Valley with Venturefar that we have to make happen.

Wow, talk about missing a lot. Thank you PUC, I have not been on the forum in too long. That was a very fun trip and an amazing couple days. Next time which unfortunately won't be until 2017 (I get back a little too late in 2016), I am going to have my oldest boy with me. Merry Christmas Puc and Tippy and all of the rest of the characters I call friends. -Coffey

Sorry for the lack of updates. I have been super busy. I am sitting in Virginia in an airport getting ready to go to Baltimore for 2 days. Then it is off to the Gulf region of the middle East.

Glad to hear you are doing better. A few months ago, I was at 6 weeks of training in Wichita Falls Texas and was going to ride over to your place and get my seat done, but you wrecked a few days before I got to Texas. I will send my seat to you in a few weeks. I am deploying for a whole year to the middle east, so you can take your time on my seat, my wife is just going to put the box on my bike to wait for me when it comes back in.
