  1. Hi Scott, I'm going to try and get to her this weekend. But may not as I have company coming for the Holidays. I've moved the 89 Blue Beastie into the center of the garage, getting her ready for some tear down I wanted to do anyway. So whenever I get started I will take some pics and keep everyone up to date. Understand about the weep hole...will check. Thanks for tip! Have not seen anything on the floor...so that may be good news. The tank is good I think, just the black cap broke. Weird. I used some 6000 glue on it. Figured if it holds the street reflectors on the hot asphalt around here, it must be good enough for the cap, right? But I'm going to hold off on asking for any help until I see what's really going on. I don't mind if the seals are gone....probably a good idea at this age of scoot to get in there and replace them anyway. I also want to take more plastic off and look at the innerds closer to see if there is any damage from age, falls, etc.,. That plastic does get brittle and I just bought some 1 foot sheets of 1/8th inch ABS to use for rebuilding things if needed. Going to try my hand at that! Also want to check the light frame on top that holds the instrument cluster and headlight area for bends and such, since I've had two parking lot falls on left side...which did move some of the top over to the right an inch. I fixed the plastics on the left side...and repainted...but now have time to look for any other damage that might be hidden in there. We shall see. Thanks for the thoughts, everyone. And...   3. Actually, the best place to cut costs for businesses is not staff, rather cut the regulations and government crap they have to deal with every day. This is THE largest detriment to productivity from small to medium size businesses today. The typical cost for having an employee is 40% of their base pay...this is just to satisfy the regs and such that Congress has imposed on the businesses. That is what it costs for HR to manage the payroll, benefits and rules and regs. Why do you think labor is being sent overseas? Not because of labor, but because of the costs associated with having an employee. Sad to say, my wife, as an HR executive/director of small to medium size businesses spent over half her time just making sure the companies were compliant to all the crap they had to deal with. She is so happy she's retired!!!
  4. Yeppers. Some problems showed up. 1: The coolant overflow/reserve bottle top broke. No kidding, the top split in two. Top half and bottom half. Got some glue on it now but found that to be interesting that it would break. Not sure if the glue will hold so will start looking for a replacement soon. 2: The coolant level looked good in the bottle. Then I looked a bit harder. Hmm. Grabbed a pencil and stuck it in the bottle.....the end of the pencil came out with a coating of "stuff". Looked like motor oil and consistency of honey! What the...? I haven't had time to look and see what the heck is going on, but seems to be the coolant bottle is isolated from the rest of the system as the coolant itself is a nice green color. And the scoot doesn't overheat....even in Arizona's summer. Guess I'll try to find some time this weekend to look and see if the hose is plugged...which is my first guess. Anyone ever run into this problem? No pics. I'm to tired after a nice weekend sailing the lake. We anchored out in a cove...six little yachts. Pic of boat is my Scotch Mist, 23ft Aquarius.
  5. I had a similar issue with a trailer sailor site, regarding wheel bearings. I posted a lesson I learned from a bearing buddy spokesperson and got back responses ridiculing my post. And, the people who got on my case were constantly having bearings burn out on their boat trailers. Needless to say, i complained and received similar responses liie you did. I left the site... Never been back. I think you responded appropriately and took proper and positive action. And I agree.. That poster probably would ruin any site. I'm grateful VR.org people I've met here are good people!! Side note. Been ten years since i posted the lesson I learned. My bearings are still running wonderfully cool, after two cross country trips to New England, sitting in snow for five months and running through lots of desert heat. Same bearings. 2.5 ton boat and trailer. Haven't touched them since that lesson. Just got back from weekend at lake yesterday. Bearings ran cool... 100 mile round-trip. I gotta think the bearing buddy lady was right and the trailer site experts were dead wrong.

  7. Sorry I'm late for this thread. My outboard motor carb was truly gunked after sitting for two years. Last time I had to buy a new carb.. Could not get the idle circuit clean. This time, a free days ago, I spent 4 hours taking the little carb off and cleaning it. What finally did the trick was using @cowpuc's trick of shooting carb cleaner back up into the drain. That got my high speed circuit working. I then shot the carb cleaner into the idle air circuit while running. Took about 5 sprays but she now runs sweet! I now know I could have brought the carb back to life by doing those two things and not have to take the carb off the motor. So the Sea Foam didn't do it, but good old carb cleaner did. And this carb is much smaller than ours with even smaller jets. Glad to hear you are back in business, but if this ever happens again, suggest you try the carb cleaner and use every trick you can find on this site. Chances are, those carbs will come back nicely!   8. Bill, When i bought the 89, i did the research and found same complaints about bike hauling. Some new ones too. Like "oh I can lift the bike up and put it right behind the cab." Uh..yea, right. 800 pounder riding back there...for sure! I finally bit the bullet and went with HaulBikes. They were most expensive. But the bike came on time, in perfect shape and the driver was admiring it as he unloaded it. He rides an HD trike that was on truck as well. $600. Worth every penny! Just saying cause unless you can find someone you know to drive it, it's going to cost. BTW, it will probably cost about $1200 for someone to drive it and then fly back. I would volunteer to help drive it over but my schedule is pretty tied up... Depending upon when you want the truck there.... Pic is what i got for my money:
  9. My VStar 950t had those on the boards. They do sparkle at night! I would be very hesitant to add those to the 1st gen. You can truly lean on that machine. Scary.
  10. 1: as i age, my legs are shrinking making for riding a1st gen more problematic. 2: the knowing that at some point in the future, no more grins when I crack that throttle. 3: wish I had started riding Ventures earlier. Oh.. Don't like about the bikes? Hmmm... Serious thought. But really... Nothing. Yamaha did an incredible job of designing the scoots. I've accepted both gens for what they are!

  13. Take battery to Autozone and have them do a load test. If it passes, battery probably good. To test for current, set your meter to the "DC amp" mode. You may have to plug the positive meter lead into another terminal to read amps. Disconnect positive lead from battery. Should be no spark at all. From a test site: Connect the Positive Multimeter Lead to the Battery Positive terminal. Make sure the Positive Lead you removed from the battery does not touch anything grounded, like the Bike frame etc…. Connect the Negative Lead from the Multimeter to the Positive Lead you removed from the Battery. You should now see current drain measured in Amps. Move to the lower Amp setting on your multimeter if the current is lower than the setting on the Multimeter Low setting. Start to unplug the wires or fuses around your bike and see if the current reading goes to zero. This will point you in the direction of the current thief. You can convert to Power measured in Watts by multiplying it by the Battery Voltage. Power = Volts x Amps 4.2Watts or (12Volts x 0.35Amps). If there is current draw with key off, there is a parasitic draw somewhere in the electrical system drawing more current than normal. The only current you should see is a teeny amount to keep the Odometer and clock memory.
  14. I'm out of step on this thread. Just don't understand why we still need daylight savings time. This is like ethanol in the gas. Why do we still need it? In Arizona, our farmers are smart enough to work a full day without the assistance of the Feds so we don't touch our clocks at all. Don't miss it either. Now how to get rid of that crap gas we have....my boat and bikes sure don't like it...
  15. My guess is either a weak or dying cell in the battery or you have something drawing battery juice while the bike is resting....assuming all connections are clean on battery.
  16. I had a flat on the YDS6C at hiway speeds outside of Mineola Texas with me and my Air Force duffle bag crammed with military and civie clothes. On my way to Arizona after basic training. I had no clue what was happening..just slowing down with no power. Then the squirlies hit....I rode it out and I coasted to a stop...on the side of I-20. Looked down and rear was flat. Scary but doable. Fortunately, the scoot only weighed in a 300 pounds plus me and my gear. Not an 800 pound monster we now ride! But that's my only experience with flats...hopefully my last....sigh.

There is this to consider: Some states now advise that if you aren't wearing a helmet (even in a no wear state), if there is an accident and you are not wearing protective gear, then you are partially responsible for your injuries. Regardless of who is at fault...no wear then you take the share. Suggest you call your insurance company and ask them...get the scoop up front... david
  20. A friend of mine is with the VA....same situation...lots of drugs. Funny thing is (well..not so funny) that the docs can't decide what to keep him on. Each new doc says "what are you on this for?". Once told, he usually says no and changes to something else. Been this way for about 10 years now. I've been after him to get a second opinion but he's reluctant to buck the system. Sad thing is, he probably doesn't need all of them....and would be much better off. I qualify for VA but haven't entered into the medical system yet. Just don't like the way it's run. ...AND the real pisser is....retirees were supposed to get full medical, free for life. That was in exchange for offering up their lives to this country. But that went away quite a few years ago. And even the latest system is still fraught with issues.. Leave it to Congress to constantly screw things up. At least now you can petition for a civilian DOc's opinion....and many vets are.
  21. 1st gen Venture Royales have a three position back rest... Allowing the passenger to lay back a little. That and the nice size of the back rest gives her great back support.
  22. +3 Same here. Lady loves the rear of the 1st gen over the 2nd gen. And yes, she has fallen asleep back there....once in a hairy high speed corner. She woke up when I scrapped something leaned way over. My fault. Decreasing radius curve caught me. I did move the 2nd gen trunk back, but she says the adjustable backrest is wonderful on the 1st gen.
  23. Yep. Put up a VHF whip and get a splitter for the radio. They have nice mounts that also allow you to find down the antenna for bridges or trailering.

  25. Gary, did you run the comparison with that bike and the two model Venture? They are close but both the VR and the RSV out perform the Suzuki....
