The rear caliper on both my ventures run a touch hotter than the fronts. However, they are not that hot. I can easily touch the calipers and rotors.. Good move, getting some of the fluid out, Skid. I bet that helped.

There are a variety of tests for the ignition system. Download the service manual from our web site and read over the tests there. See if any of that helps. Or.. Search this site for older posts on ignition woes, or, motor dies..... Or ignition testing. Different search terms usually helps. Pay attention to the posts at the bottom of the pages. They are related by subject matter and can often take you to a really good thread that is just what you were looking for. The RSTD is a newer bike, so ignition boxes are not usually the problem. Corrosion of wires to and from the box can be an issue as well as sensors to the ignition box. You may be right, but it's always best to rule out the cheap stuff first. The wiring for the RSV and the RSTD are similar in terms of engine operation.

I have to be careful with boots. It seems some of the boots I really like, the toes are to thick to fit under the shift. I've got one pair, brand new that I can't ride in the 1st Gen with.... Can't get the toe under there.

Easy peasy...everything fit perfectly....except the RLU gets in the way. Only high beam! That's when I remembered....oh yea....I have to modify the RLU. Old. What memory.....? BTW, the light was really bright! Grins... When I get ambitious, I'll make the mod and put the LED in. But not today.

It would be dead easy for Yamaha to take the high end V4, tune it to around 140hp and make it silky smooth. Many of you may not remember but the early v4's in the 1st Gens were to smooth so they had to add a little rumble. No one liked the dead smooth motor. But I think that is going against the current vtwin thinking. I asked my riding buddy who has an HD Ultra Classic about this...and he said if Yamaha comes out with a fuel injected V4...it will kick everyone's butt. If they come out with a vtwin, it will not sell....because everyone else already has one. HoHum..... BUT.... in the advertising world, we were always taught to wait until something great is introduced then jump on the bandwagon. Far more effective a sell to be part of the crowd already riding the vtwins. Yamaha just has to do something truly "Value Added". IE, really throw in something that we all want...and do it as standard equipment. That will sway buyers fro the Victory's and HD's to our brand. As far as the web site is concerned...regardless of the name...the scoots and their riders should be welcome here....and I'm sure they would be. Of course, the new bike could be known as the Star/Yamaha Venture Journey. I have no dog in this hunt, but a nice rumbly vtwin that revs to 7500rpm....would still catch my eye....yes sir ee.

Riding in hot weather on a 1st gen. Hmm... 1: Boots. Combat boots work as they usually can protect your ankles. The soles may be OK if they are oil resistant and have nice heels. You want the boots to grip. As tall as you can stand is best too. Ohio state troopers wear hard leather boots that go to just under the knee when bent. For a reason. I had a pair and went down hard in Boston traffic. The boots took most of the abuse as well as my dad's WW2 leather jacket. He was mad the jacket was shredded. But pleased my back was fine...not a scratch. 2: Helmet, modular at the minimum. I have 3, they are noisier than full face, but I love the ability to raise the front lid when fueling up. Or just taking a break. Ventilation doesn't seem to go with price. I have a cheap Bilt that has more ventilation that another helmet twice it's price. Who knows. Most important is the fit! If the helmet fits well, then a little heat is not an issue. If the helmet is to tight...throw it out as the headaches are not worth it! An added benefit to many new helmets today is the internal sun visor. Worth it's weight in gold! I love being able to raise and lower it as the sun and clouds change the lighting. Kinda hard to take off sunglasses at 70 mph! 3: Jacket. VanRiver has it right. I've lived in Arizona for almost 50 years(Yikes!) and always rode with full clothes. I own 2 leather jackets and 2 mesh jackets. What gets used the most is the mesh with the warmth liner. BTW, there is a study on the internet somewhere that shows how a full leather jacket is actually better for you in the heat than a mesh. Yes it's better for protection, but also supposedly better for heat. Yea you get hot in the leather, but the leather keeps the hot wind off of you. Hot wind will dehydrate you faster than anything else, causing severe distress. Seriously, it's better to sweat than get heat stroke. BTW, most people, having never had heat stroke...will get it without realizing it...and that's where the trouble begins....and ends. I know heat stroke and choose to ride with mesh. I simply stop and hydrate all the time and keep an eye out for symptoms of HE. 4: Pants. Two thoughts here: A: ride with under armor under your jeans or B: ride with leathers, chaps or reinforced jeans with armor. Neither one is going to give you air flow. So it's really your choice here. And the choice is road rash or broken bones. Only good leather or chaps with protect from road rash but not broken bones. And the under armor and jeans is great for bones but not so much for rash. See what I mean? I'm sure there are some clothes out there that will do both. But they are going to be pricey! Again your choice. Either way you will have hot legs.... 5. !st gen. Install some highway pegs on her. That alone with help cool you off when riding. It puts your legs in the airflow as well as diverts more air to your body. Also, don't forget to close the vents on either side of the motor. They keep the motor heat off the legs when closed. I call those my heaters...as they work great to provide heat when open as I ride around in the winter! 6: Wet vest. Get one. Yea, the cheapies will work even if they initially get your clothes wet too. But lets face it, wet clothes with hot wind means cool! At least until it drys out. The higher priced spreads can be either water based or chemical based and last longer. Worth the price. My .02cents....

Saw that before and agreed.. Does look like Yamaha parts on it. Frame fairing. Liquid cooled vtwin..... And if it has the revs of our beloved v4.... I'll be happy! Just don't want another hohum vtwin. In the picture​... Does look like a modern 1st gen.....whee! Love that windshield rake...

+3 on bypass. Make sure you loosen little screw before trying to turn valve. If you aren't familiar with how valve works, search older posts. There are pics... maybe in 1st gen tech area... that shows proper orientation. My 89 runs around 1/3rd at highway. Just above half at normal stop and go city stuff. And 3/4 in Arizona summer city traffic stuff. Fan kicks in around 3/4. And yes.. It's pretty quiet. But like a fuel gauge, the temp gauge can vary from bike to bike.... Just because it can.

Keep up? You should be easily able to smoke them! Grins!

$50 !!!! What a find...... I think it would be worth putting a few bux in it, to check it out. Even with $500.00 in it, you should be able to get that back from selling parts. Here's hoping you found a gem, and very little effort brings lots of smiles!

Didn't know about Radio Shack, but it makes sense. They lost their direction when they dropped most of the electronics that made then famous. Thanks for the info, Dion. As mentioned before, i bought the Edsets adapter that I plug in to the 5 pin cable for my ear buds. I like Etymotic Research ear buds as they offer passive noise reduction as well as good sounds. Agreed with above that J&M charges a premium...... But here is why. Twice this year I've walked in with not working, out of warrantee items...a speaker/mic helmet set and a cord that adapts the headset to the Venture. In the first case, they tested and said the speaker set worked fine but upgraded my mic to a better noise reduction one. The second case they tested the cable and replaced it with a new one. I was out the door, smiling, in less than ten minutes... No charge for either situation. For that kind of service... I'm happy to pay more..... My .02$

You will find 5th gear best at 4k rpm... very good mileage as well. For both of my Ventures, 4k rpm is sweet... In either 4th or 5th gear. I can ride all day in 4th gear on two lane roads. Smooth as silk and great mpgs!! Congrats... Now push for more ! Grins

Maybe an email to J&M and see what they recommend... They have some good speakers...
