  1. Beautiful day after a few nights of rain! Prayers Up!
  2. Wish there was someone around here who was about to do theirs. I'd like to see how it goes. But I think @KIC is good on his. At least he hasn't mentioned doing any valve work. We only talked about our oil leaks....getting together to tear in to those. Plus, I volunteered to help him replace the shock again. We have a donor bike and the rear shock seems pretty good. I'll look on youtube and see if there is a video that shows what I need. Thanks, gentlemen...
  3. Dion, Yea...maybe. I can try that. Thanks. Other than taking a Dremel to it, I'm not sure what else to try. It won't pry out....
  4. I've given some thought to tool kits. Have come to the conclusion you can't prepare for every contingency. So what I carry, is the standard tool kit that came with the bike, air pump with gauge, emergency battery charger (lithium), socket set, 12volt inflator. If I'm on a long trip in middle of nowhere, then more tools. On local freeways, less tools. Right saddlebag is relegated to tools. Room left over goes to sneakers/liners, etc.. Most important things are credit card, insurance card and friends phone #'s along the way. In AZ, we also carry extra water, snack food and an emergency raincover/reflector/first aid kit. I don't carry tire changing...probably couldn't handle that anyway at my tender age!! I don't carry spare stators, tires, etc.. I do tend to trust my scoots maybe a bit to much.
  5. Thanks Jeff. So a little twist backwards is ok. Good to know.
  6. I'm thinking of checking my valves on the 05. I've read through the procedure and other than the 3 hours it will probably take me to get down to where I can see and get to the valve covers, I'm ok with doing this. BUT, there seems to be a discrepancy with the procedure to insert/remove the tool. The posts I read said rotate the engine enough(counterclockwise) to get the valve tool to the proper position to remove the shim but go no farther as you can break the tool or the motor! Here's the question, if you can't go to far or you will break something, how the heck do you get the tool out? You are not supposed to go backwards (clockwise) or you might damage something inside, and if you keep going counterclockwise you might break the tool or the motor? Sorry, but my logic is out the window on this one. What am I missing? How does the tool come out so you can do the next set of valves?????
  7. OK...got a chance to go out to work on the 89 this morning. Went to try and get the old sight glass out of the spare clutch MC that I took off a parts bike that @KIC and I picked up from a generous couple who own a VR Trike. They donated their parts bike to us for our use. The glass/plastic(?) crunched out in pieces, yea it was that far gone. But is this all there is? Is there a ring or something holding it in? Or just glued? I did order the replacement kit @Prairiehammer posted a while back and some crystal lenses that were posted as working as well (just in case). TIA
  8. Just ordered the kit! Thanks for posting this, Kevin. david
  9. 2 New Videos came out today for the Venture... Engine and rider confidence http://click.email.yamahamotorsports.com/?qs=d7ffb090750711bacab9863da6e16a90f69ec646eb928800aa75f91e1c689283912a6f5ff83bfe61d8576cd842107b93e635e115f650a411 or https://www.yamahamotorsports.com/transcontinental-touring/models/2018/star-venture/videos?utm_source=SingleMessage&utm_medium=Email&utm_campaign=Product&utm_term=EM9-Launch-Follow-Up-Video-Engine&utm_content=Motorcycle-Tour-Transcontinental-Star-Venture
  10. Interesting thread. Coming back from when I blew the signal fuse on the RSV....about 30 miles from home and I kept thinking the engine was missing. Turns out when I turned the corner and headed south, ran into gusty headwinds. Once I turned west again, she was smooth as silk. Don't think I've ever experienced this on the 89. Think the 89 is much slippery through the air than the RSV.
  11. In Arizona, you MUST wait until the intersection is clear before proceeding. Even if the other driver is running the red. That's the law here. Regarding merging, yea...we have the same problem here too. The DOT took down the merge signs and now people think all they have to do is put on their blinkies and we all will move out of their way. Even if they enter at 45mph and the speed limit is 75! I tell ya, road rage is going to be more common if this keeps up. No common sense.
  12. :sign yeah that: The only issue I've found with any highway pegs is getting them out to the side far enough so my legs don't rub on the sides of the fairing. Hopefully those that you linked to, Don, would do the trick.
  13. Looks like the PO broke the thing and jury rigged it with a spade connector going to a fuse somewhere...hopefully. Both fuses gone as well as their mounts! That's a first....
  14. Agreed RD...always nice to have a spare. I too got real tired of the lies told to me over the phone. The last drive out of town to visit a scoot was also the last time I did that. Hit the internet afterwards. My sanity was worth more to me....than a few bux in my pocket. Almost got into it with that last guy who told me his was in great shape. I drove 3 hours only to find it wasn't worth $100. To say nothing of the $1500 he wanted for it. I pointed out all the problems, plastic cracked or missing, motor leaked oil and water, tires old and cracked, seats cracked, grips looked like they got run over by a farm tractor...twice, and so forth. He got madder than heck. Good thing I was holding a screw driver in my hand...I really had the feeling he was going to come after me for putting his "Excellent" condition VR down! My parting comment to him was he should be happy I don't charge him for my time and gas...that he wasted. Oh boy, David...you can really put your mouth into it sometimes!! But guess that's the nature of stupidity. Grins...
  15. Mr. Bongo has it right. It's the input to the coil...the little wires that come from the TCI. The problem will either be in the TCI, the connectors at the TCI, the wires going to the coil from the TCI or the connectors at the coil from the TCI. That is the drive for the tach. No ground pulse from the TCI to the coil, no spark. (think that's right) Little fuzzy in brain tonight. Got back home after a long weekend away only to find the air condition dead....no air handler fan. Poor compressor was running for I don't know how long....doing nothing. 88 degrees in house....going to be a long night... Ugh...
  16. An 89 for around$2k should be about perfect condition. Me..I gave up looking for one around the Southwest that wasn't in poor shape four years ago. Found mine in Wisconsin and had it shipped. Total, under$2800 and got a very nice 89! So go looking elsewhere... You might find your next scoot!
  17. Tach not working. Driven off of cyl #2 . Then #2 coil not working or bad connection to coil, or connection loose.#2 is left front.
  18. I'm on the road, too. But on 4 wheels. Went to Payson with youngest and me lady. Cleaned up cabin, then went to local concert at a house in Pine. Nice place...a bit out of my budget for sure. No pics as they are in phone and I'm on tablet. I'll be home in morning, @cowpuc, if you want to send pics to me. But my first thought was what fool said. Change the camera settings. Unless you want to save pics in bestest resolution for the future. I'll be happy to shrink those mother's down and post for you. Be safe, keep the speed down... Those Jackelopes don't give much warning before they jump out to nibble on your ankles!! D

  20. Couple of possible reasons. By not changing both inputs and outputs, you may have done something to motor. Doubtful as the timing didn't change just ignition. Ie, never mind. In making the swap you damaged an already damaged part just a tad more...like a plug wire. By moving it around, if it was bad to begin with, it could be worse now. Or one of the wires isn't in the coil all the way. It needs to be pushed in and then held in by the rubber o ring and finger nut. Or it's broken at the plug cap. Or green with crud on the end. Plug caps can and do go bad as well. If you haven't changed wires and caps in a while that would be my next move. I bought a set online that fit perfectly and were the proper resistance for our TCI. Think they were tested at 5K ohms. Said so on the package. Coils do go bad but not that frequently. If you live in a wet area, pull the TCI out from under the coil area. Lots of cable to let it sit on the air cleaner. Search the older posts...lots of pics and info on cleaning and checking the TCI. Including posts on how to get it apart and check the diodes. There is a diode for each cylinder that can get grungy and die.
  21. I'm inclined to think it's from the vent hose from the carbs. Looks like it's oil type dirt inside the center of the bike frame area...like the oil was a bit too full and you were running fast and furious. Blew the oil up into the air cleaners and back down the hoses or loose carb joints.
  22. There is also a way to test if the starter or starter solenoid is bad. Search the archives here as someone did post a good test procedure, if memory serves. But I'm sure the manual also covers that just more involved. Keep us posted on battery test results.
  23. Notice they are all dealers scumming for a hit.
