  1. I've had the Clearviews on the last 4 scoots. All had the vents. Air flow does depend upon the bike, but both the 89 VR and the 05 RSV give me air flow. The RSV has really nice flow into my chest with vent open. Needed in Arizona! I don't have the plastic chrome pieces on the sides of the front fairing.... Maybe that's the difference. P.O. took them off I guess.
  2. I took some pictures of my mystery rack. Understand, it's been on there for 4 years now with the Kuryakin Bag on top and no issues with the trunk lid cracking. And the bag is full with soft stuff as mentioned earlier. So yea, I would agree that having metal straps braces underneath is good...I never bothered to do so. On the pictures underneath the lid, the rack bolts are the small ones on each corner of the picture! David
  3. Thanks again Dave for your pictures! Update..... Well...I simply don't see any difference yet in lower wind turbulence since I mounted the wind deflectors. I'll probably have to wait to see if my knees still get wet in the rain. That is..? If it ever rains again in Arizona!!
  4. In higher wind situations on the highway, I would suggest 65 to 70 mph in 4th gear. Let the motor work. Both 4th and 5th gears are overdrive gearing. So 65 to 70 is fine in 4th... Especially in winds...2 up. It's possible mpgs will improve. I never shift into 5th until 75... On two lanes at 65 mph... I'll stay in 4th all day. Carb tuning is very important on these motors for best performance and mpgs. They are sophisticated systems and will last forever if taken care of. Buffeting: I get some from above windshield and some from below... Coming up from either side of tank. The above winds were mostly cured by the largest windshield I could find. Clearview makes one that's wider and taller than stock. I added a vent which is huge in the Arizona heat. The below winds I've left alone. Yamaha already added 2 different spoilers below... Guess they are doing the best they can. This buffeting is typical of a fork mounted fairing. A solid body mounted fairing liked the 1st gens have is far better at weather protection...inherent in the design. Oh...there is a trade off...with the large Clearview, I do have to look through the windshield at all times. Not much of an issue as it doesn't rain much in AZ! But on a cross country trip I carried Rain X product and it did a great job keeping the rain sliding right off! Through Oklahoma thunderstorms, I was able to see just fine.... On another bike, I found a Clearview that had a lip on top to redirect the wind. That...and tilting windshield back to match the fork angle made a huge improvement over stock. Ideas for you...hope this helps...

Whatever the heck I bought 4 years ago...was a name brand. But sure looks like this. Just try and find out how good the chrome is....or if it's stainless (better yet)

  8. There are two other things to look at: 1. The carb floats are set wrong. Yea, I know that shouldnt effect mpgs, but it does. Weird. Lean those floats. To much fuel 2. Carb diaphrams are holy! If the diaphrams have even the teeniest holes or are not supple or installed properly will ruin the mixture to the carbs. Suggest you think small things first. Forget plugs, etc., Unless she's not running in all 4. Easy test. Check exhaust temps just after start.
  9. Can't remember what I bought but it was an aftermarket unit. Just make sure it has rubber gaskets and washers in the 4 posts that go through the lid. It is flimsy plastic. Mine is full with rain gear, scarf, jacket liner and misc things like electrolite packets for water, kleenex, etc. Not one problem. In fact, after a cross country trip, I never bothered to take the Kuryakin bag off. It's still there and still packed. No issues.
  10. It's a water cooled v4. Has some heat but not excessive. Start with cold engine. Check radiator coolant bottle. Check radiator has coolant. Check to see if the bypass valve is in the run position... Not the bypass position. Under the radiator. Don't force valve. There should be a button to push in to turn... Or something like that. Don't remember and I'm not near my scoot. Check to see if fan is coming on. There usually are two switches to turn on fan, the coolant switch is up in the right side of radiator...2 wires. Don't remember if that switch turns in when grounded or with power. Try grounding switch first. Manual available for download on this site... Hope this helps...
  11. I've only managed one... They was MD 3 (yikes) years ago. Met many of the gang there... Even my lady enjoyed meeting everyone. You are all good people.... Know that. And also know that no matter what the future holds for us, individually or together as a group, we have established a bond of friendship that can never be erased. For that alone, I'm grateful! D
  12. I'm still alive and kicking. Just keeping quiet in my part of the world. Still ride but staying local. Still trying to figure out a way to ride up to the Pacific northwest. Problem is weather. When it's nice riding up there, it's hell down in Arizona and Nevada. Crossing the desert in 100 degree heat is not my style anymore. I may have to resort to using a trailer(gasp) for the scoot! @kic is still around in Tucson and still rides. But he's been busy with life. I'm in touch with him. No one else in AZ I've been able to keep up with.
  13. MSR. An old aluminum camp kit for pot and utensils. Simple, light. Cheap.
  14. That's what I wanted to do as well. Again, the only place I can think of and still be able to reach it... is in front of windshield. Maybe just above the speedo in center.
  15. Does the mount vibrate? Most Ram mounts I used to use for work would vibrate when extended more than 6 inches or so.
  16. I couldn't get basecamp to work either. I sent a rather criptic email to Garmin about it... Never heard back. On my trip 4 years ago ( good grief, been that long!!), I wrote directions on a cheat sheet and stuck it in the tank pouch. At gas up, I would review next stage. What I found was I used the gps really just for interchanges. On the smaller roads, I used it to see where gas and food might be as I traveled. Nowadays, I just turn the gps on and look at it once in a while. Or put it in trunk and forget about it. I would suggest you look at google maps or Microsoft streets and figure out a way to use them. Basecamp sucks.
  17. I tried mounting mine on the bars...nope. looking through the windshield can be a problem when the sun hits the shield at an angle. Honestly couldn't find a spot. Was thinking of my helmet. Gave up on that too. I suppose I could mount it to the front of the windshield...on top. It will be in my life of sight. So that's not attractive... But... In other words, I haven't found a place yet..... Do let me know if you do. I'm frustrated.
  18. Welcome back, father of Dr. Dawson! Proud dad, I bet!!
  19. They are few and far between. Most of the ones from China say they fit but they don't. I gave up searching. Going to mount mine either in the lower forks where the fender attaches, or in the lower plastic by my knees somewhere. Going with smaller lights as well.
  20. Pretty scoot.... Answers: fuel mix doesn't matter with regards to deceleration popping, or engine running or hydro locking. Not sure what you were referring to. The popping is due to unburned fuel firing off in the pipes. Lean condition. Normal due to emissions. Hydro lock can occur with these bikes, or any bike that had gas tank on top and carbs. If the float in a carb sticks open, fuel can run down into the motor. So yea, I turn petcock off all the time as well. Just simply insurance to do so. As far as fuel, I run normal 89 octane stuff. Bike likes it just fine. Occasionally I put some Seafoam in tank and leave it there as I ride. Just to keep things clean. Enjoy the ride!! David My scoot in Arizona...picture
  21. Don't think so... But who knows? When I get some time, I'll go ahead and epoxy them in the best fit I can get. I was just hoping someone has them installed and could get me a picture..?
  22. A while back, one of our members made some black plastic wing deflectors to velcro to the underside of the 2nd gens lower fairing. The idea here was to deflect winds and rain from hitting the knees. Made a mistake today after my morning breakfast ride... Was digging through a box in the garage and came across those deflectors! Forgot I had them. Problem: they don't seem to fit perfectly anywhere on top of the lower fairing. I understand how they should fit.... But the underside of the top of the fairing isn't the same contour as the deflector. Anyone have pictures of where they are supposed to fit? My guess is it's a compromise. But I would like to get closer to where they were designed to fit...?
  23. It's an easy repair. You will need the gasket for the drive gear. Get a replacement (used) slave or buy the repair kit. While you are in there, take off the gear selector switch, clean the contacts and put back together. Search this forum. I shot some pics of the area while looking for a leak.
  24. That's interesting. Wouldn't think there would be any way for things to break in that box......
