  1. The biggest reason I hated selling my VStar 950 Tourer was the engine was so strong and sweet. Look what they've done to that 942CC beastie! Nice!
  2. If I wasn't a lifelong Yamaha fan, that is the scoot I would have gone with before I bought my first 1st Gen! Thanks for the pictures....pretty! Keep healing @cowpuc....glad to see your forum fingers are working great! Grins!
  3. Yes, I was talking about Mr. Butler. If you explain to him you want the seat front end narrower so it's easier for your legs to swing down AND you would like another inch or so off the seat height BUT want more dense foam there to make up for the comfort lost....then see what he says. If he can do just that, he will. And his work is excellent. My 30 inch inseam and good boots allows me to flat foot my 2nd gen and 1st gen (barely). As far as the 130 tire handling? Well I'm going to find out this Fall. I'm going to "assume" the steering will be lighter and take it from there. Should be fine since the 2nd gen is so stable to begin with!
  4. The primary differences between the VStar and the Venture is going to be comfort and weather protection. I owned the VStar 950 Tourer and just sold it. Wonderful cruising bike...really liked it but one to many in the barn. Weather protection was non-existent despite the largest Clearview Windshield with vent! The 1300 wasn't much better and the bars were to wide for me. I'm 5'10" and nearing 70. I have the 2nd Gen RSV and have no problems with it. Yea, it's a bit top heavy and cumbersome at low speeds. That you will notice right away when compared to the VStar. But there on out, there is no comparison. The VStar is a cruiser...the RSV is a Touring bike. As mentioned, the rider's seat can be modified by a gentleman here in the site to narrow the front end a bit and add some padding. That will take care of your short legs and feet on the ground comfort level. I'm at stock seat height and no trouble flatfooting. The front end can be lowered (free). That, and a 130 width front tire instead of the 150 width...will make the scoot much easier to handle at slow speeds. But again, despite my elderly bod, I muscled my stock 2nd gen around AZ Rt 191, (The Devils Highway) and it's hundreds of hairpin 20 mph turns for over 100 miles and was still in better shape than my friend riding his HD Ultra Classic. He was whipped after a 12 hour day in the saddle...I was tired but could have gone on. Remember, I'm not young anymore. That says a lot to me for the comfort of the RSV. Get a ride on one...you'll see what we are talking about. There really isn't any comparison....but at least now you know what to look for. This should help you decide if this bike is right for your riding habits... My forks moved up 1 inch to lower the front end...Also you can see I have the Baron's 1 1/2 inch extensions on the bars as my arms aren't very long... Me at a break on the Devil's Highway... Hope this helps....
  5. So where do you recommend would be the best place to post Venture sightings? Here in the Watering Hole?
  6. Primer? Let the paint shop give you their recommendation, if you are going to use them....
  7. The S5 is still around, have to search. But I believe it's been supplanted by the S7 or S8... http://www.ebay.com/itm/BroView-S-Series-S7-H4-HB2-Headlight-High-Low-Beam-25W-4000LM-pc-Kit-LED-Bulb-/182775271003?fits=Model%3AS5&hash=item2a8e414e5b:g:CUsAAOSwHqRZwI9L&vxp=mtr http://www.ebay.com/itm/BroView-S-Series-S7-H4-9003-Cree-8000LM-Headlight-Dual-Beam-50W-White-6500K-LED-/232493583912?fits=Model%3AS5&hash=item3621b28e28:g:XxYAAOSwQG5ZwMgI&vxp=mtr
  8. Before you do anything else.... rDrain the clutch system, refill with fresh DOT3 and bleed. Try again. You may have to bleed and flush more than once to get the crud out. After doing that a few times, and if you still don't have a clutch, then time to think about rebuilding master and putting in a new slave. Slave is located at the bottom center of the motor...hidden .... left side.
  9. Welcome to our group. Your bike is a 1st generation Venture. The very first thing I would recommend is to go to the Read only technical library on this site. Under "Forum". Download the service manual. Second, start reading all about the clutch...the 3rd topic under the 1st Generation tech library is about rebuilding the clutch. Third, after doing all of that....if you look on the right side of the page, near the top...you should see a small rectangular white box area. That is the search function. Type in your search words, IE, clutch, or master cylinder...for example and follow the suggested threads. Also, if you find a thread that is close to what you are looking for... look down at the bottom of the page...there are other suggestions offered by the site that will probably pertain to what you are reading. They are in order of age/date. Doing all this will keep you busy repairing and shining up your bike! If you get stumped by a post....shout out and someone should jump in shortly with some thoughts to help. If you haven't joined, this is the best $12 you will ever spend! Do so... OH...take pics of your bike. Before and after... and post here. We like to see what others do, how they are doing and, of course, pictures are worth more than a thousand words around here! They also help tremendously to solve problems when we can see what you are referring to. Again, welcome...and enjoy your bike! (can't wait to hear what you have to say when you crack the throttle for the 1st time....heehee)
  10. Another Venture sighting, this time a two tone light colors? I-19 heading northbound just before the San Pedro river bridge....around 12:15pm today. Geesh...where are these people coming from and why aren't they on our site???
  11. Note to self: If the oil level is still at the "full" mark after a bit of running, loosen oil drain and let some out. Don't want the excess oil to get blown into the air box and create a mess. Halfway mark is usually max....
  12. If you paid for coverage, you should have a case. Even if they are correct, if you were not informed and paid the premium and it's listed on your policy, the burden should shift back to them. Legal beagle time.... At least for an opinion.
  13. Hi James, Absolutely...but try to come down after the 16th of October. I'm shooting and editing a grant video for a company.....I should have some time after that. Be out of town in Oregon visiting my sister until then.... As well as putting that video piece together. Have maintenance almost complete on the RSV, hope to get to the VR in the next month as well. Looking forward to getting together with you.... D
  14. Only when running on all four carbs? Boy... That would be quite rare to have all four carbs leaking. So..... I'm going for the fuel line or fuel rail has a leak and it's running down all carbs. Take off the tank..... Scoot should run for a few minutes without tank. Look for leaks under the air plenums.... Dry off the top of the carbs first... In fact... Dry them completely. Then run test. You can run scoot longer with tank on table near bike and long fuel line.
  15. Excellent news! Prayers Up! ( Never hurts to keep them coming)
  16. 3pm today. Light Brown 1st Gen sighted heading northbound on 19th avenue... North of Dunlop. @Freebird. Would it be a good idea to add another forum under the general discussion area for venture sightings?
  17. Bill, I haven't painted an entire panel but what I did do was easy. I sanded smooth, then painted with color, covered with clear. By not masking the blend areas of old and new, (thanks Jeff), the color went on nicely. The clear was not masked either. Took two tries on the sanding as I didn't get it smooth enough and it showed. So sanded off 1st attempt and did again. Only mask areas where you need color separation and use the factory lines. The only issue with paint is you need to take panel in and have local shop match. Colorite will not have proper color for our older bikes as the paint formulation used today gives wrong color for our older paints. At least it did with my 89. I ended up taking panel in and local shop made a small batch for me. The color matched perfectly... Despite the years of sun exposure. The advantage to matching! I bought a tiny spray gun from Harbor Freight. Only held a couple of ounces, but that would be more than enough to do most if not all your panels one light coat. Light coats are better. Clean gun after every use! Follow paint shops instructions on temperature and time between coats. Oh...I test sprayed using water on the wall of my house to set pattern and density of paint spray. Then didn't touch controls! Got a nice light spray without to much overspray. If I can find my posts with pics and info I'll add to here. But you can find it faster as I'm out of town... And yea.. You can do this. It was easy and fun. Prep is the key. Found thread. http://www.venturerider.org/forum/showthread.php?119659-Doing-some-repairs-to-89&highlight=Painting
  18. I tried the beads on the front of the RSV but guess they, dealer, didn't put enough in as the tire bounced all the way home and back. 35 miles each way on the freeway. They replaced with good old weights.
  19. Then that's not a problem in Arizona. None of the counties have emission test for bikes anymore. Yay!
  20. Mover, is it gear whine or electrical whine? Both go up and down in pitch with engine speed. If you can hear it sitting still with motor reving, it's electrical. That usually means a poor ground. Split fairing and clean audio connectors. If it's gear whine, turn down your auto leveling on the audio. It tends to increase volume when you aren't talking, making the road/ engine noise louder. Suggestions that may help...
  21. I asked the original question because I bought a couple of those cheap pumps before I knew about their failure rate. Hence the thought of maybe taking off the points and stick them in the bag of parts. Guess I should find them and check the pipe size first. If it's correct, use that pump as a spare. Otherwise, pull the points and save them as emergency points.
  22. Flag etiquette. Assume flags mounted on luggage rack. So what side is proper for US flag if flown alone? If flying two flags, does US flag go to the right or left?
  23. My thinking it would be the latter. A fire breathing, rip snorting powerhouse....detuned just a tad for smooth, mind blowing acceleration and 40 mpgs!!
