Welcome. Can't help you there. Never even thought about it. Others have. Hopefully, others will chime in who have done that.

Speaking of weather in Arizona. This past month of May has been fascinating! It has been way below normal temps all but 6 days. Seriously cool here. It snowed in Flagstaff 2 days ago. So what do I do when I wake up to temps in the 50's...go ride, of course! Took my normal zoom down to Rio Rico for breakfast. Came around a curve in traffic at 75 mph, and lo and behold, the right lane was blocked with hay scattered all over the lane. Thankfully, the guy in the pick up next to me saw the problem and sped up...while I slammed on the brakes and goosed the bars for a quick sideslip into the passing lane. Do I like the handling of the Shinko's? Uh...yea...I slid right in behind the pickup and he raised his hand...I saluted him saying thanks! I simply couldn't see anything in that lane except for the trucks heading down to Nogales for some veggie pickups. BTW, trucks going over hay bales on the road makes for an interesting visual. It's like the hay bales exploded! Back to breakfast...Had my usual except without the taters and toast. Trying to cut down on weight, ya know. I was offered their cowboy beans...what a good choice with eggs! On the way home...stopped for the obligatory pics...and then goosed it getting back on the slab. What a pleasure that bike is in 2nd gear! Breaking the speed limit in 2nd gear is a thrill...at least for me. And we do get there rather quickly, too! By the way, this area I stopped is now up for sale. One of my favorite places to stop and enjoy the views. Hope someone doesn't buy the land then close it off to traffic.

To be honest, I applaud what you want to do but really don't think it's going to work. There just isn't that much room underneath so the CT is going to be smaller than you might like. The one you linked to looks good, just wonder about wear and handling. My apologies about not jumping in earlier as I would have recommended the Shinko 777HD tire. It wears well and really handles nicely. So keep that in mind for next time...or not...if you are like me and really don't like doing that job. @cowpuc did it so often I bet he can still change a tire in his sleep! He is that good! As far as taking the bike apart...yep...I always take off both side bags and both mufflers, then put her up on the centerstand and lay her down on her front forks. Gives me much more room underneath the rear to work on her. And yes, I can understand your pain with all the bling on the bike. That's the primary reason I've kept mine somewhat stock. I just don't want to lay underneath there taking all the stuff on and off! Wishing you luck on your endeavor...and glad you are done!

Radio/CB System Won't Turn Off

:sign yeah that: Every issue I've had with the controller was cured by cleaning the connector. Wouldn't think it would be a problem in Arizona. I always believed the dry heat killed off those pesky contamination germs! My bad...grins. -

There are two seals I can see. The inner seal I think goes over the lip toward the inside of the piston. It looks like it from this thread I found... The outer seal is easy.... https://www.venturerider.org/forum/showthread.php?116337-Clutch-Hydraulic-Rebuild-Tutorial- 36 replies

This company is selling out of it's 2 wheel tire monitoring systems. Half price. Will sell until gone... https://www.tiretraker.com/products.php?cat=4 I know nothing about the product or company but they do seem to have a good reputation... The only issue is they recommend that motorcycles install metal valve stems...for obviously important reasons. Like safety!

Due to a server malfunction a number of years ago, some of the pics got misplaced. @Freebird is our owner and with some luck, he'll find the pics from the above posts and bring them back. In the meantime, search the forum...you may find some other posts with pics of the seal. May have to define your search terms a few different times. Oh, on the bottom of each page are some related post suggestions. You never know what you may find following some of those link suggestions!- 36 replies

Glad you found the problem. Did you splice those wires or did the PO? I ask because I would wonder why someone (PO) would want to do anything with those wires. They are well protected. We have a member here who makes accessory harness's if we want to add some electrical stuff to the bike...but it would NOT be connected to that plug! The other side of the fairing has a 12 volt source (cig lighter outlet) that can be tapped into easily without any cutting or splicing. FYI. Plus, you may want to take off the tank and see if the PO has put the bypass for the ignition harness on. I suggest that as the RSV sends a ton of power through the ignition switch, causing the ignition switch to fail at some point from all the current. Bypass harness is small, cheap and sends most of the high end current away from the switch. it's plug and play as well..

Well now I'm sad. I just found an auction house. In January, a Yamaha YDS-6C was sold for $11K !! Beautiful shape too. Not that I could have afforded it...by any means....sigh. https://www.mecum.com/lots/LV0119-347915/1969-yamaha-yds6c-scrambler/ To many other scoots that I loved are there as well. Norton's, BSA's...Yikes!

Ronnie, That's good mpg's for an RSV hovering around 80mph! Glad you had a nice ride!

My 89's favorite hiding places are on top of the radiator, on top of the exhaust collector and behind the motor but in front of the rear shock. I finally got tired of mirrors and snake lights. Ordered a tiny camera that plugs into the phone. Has a led ring light at the end of the stalk. I can see! Found 2 nuts hiding in the 89 that way. So before you go "nuts", get one of these little cams....fun to play with too! https://www.amazon.com/DEPSTECH-Semi-rigid-Inspection-Waterproof-Adjustable/dp/B00STB0EW6 I know nothing about above cam....just included the link so you would know what I was talking about. I've had my little one for 3 years now. Still works...

James! Let's do that. You have missed the absolutely best riding we've had in years for May. This morning it was 48 degrees in Green Valley. Nice riding. I'm hoping the weather will co-operate next week when you come down and we can ride! Maybe a run up to Prescott for an all day adventure! Regardless of the weather, looking forward to having our meet and eat somewhere in the wilds of the desert!

Love that 2 cycle sound! I may have to find a 2 cycle just to putz around on! I've been trying to find a YDS-6C. just to rare I guess. My 1st Yamaha. Pic from internet.

Considering trading my '83 in on an '89 Pros and Cons?
videoarizona replied to luvmy40's topic in Watering Hole
I have an 89....and it's a great scoot. Differences you will note: 1: Heavier. So a bit slower than a MK1. 2: Brakes better. Not perfect, but better. I'm still linked and that works well for me. I still get good rear end stability when braking due to the way it's designed. 3: Electronic anti-dive. Works, just uses battery. It's interesting to sit at light at watch the battery meter go down a bit when you put/hold the brake on. Not an issue, just be aware that it's there... 4: Changing tires is easy if you kneel her on the front forks as said above. But I still take off the mufflers and bags as it's still far easier to get to the axle nut. I loosen the nut BEFORE I put her up on stand and down onto the forks.... As far as MPG's. That's really dependant upon wind, speed, etc. I've seen 33 mpg's to 45 mpg's. Current trip yesterday...155 miles in 4th gear most of the way at 60 - 65mph on 2 lanes...got 39mpg. That was a full tank.....not into reserve yet. (155 miles, 3.92 gallons...39.54 mpg) The secret to mpg's is similar to the MK1's. Cleaned plugs or new, no brake drag, easy on throttle (resist twisting that thing!) I love the gear ratios on the MK2. I think they are perfect for a sport touring bike. 75 mph is around 4200 rpm and she will climb hills like that, get good mileage and is smooth as silk. 2nd gear is the fun gear....and you can hit 100 in 4th. Scary too! Check rear end by driving...slight acceleration then quick off. Should be minimum whine. Mine still does that, but it was worse when I got it. Found the rear end of the drive shaft was connected to the rear gear to the pumpkin which was broken. The bolt holding the gear was broken. Kevin C. figured it out from the pics I posted. Similar situation in front end of drive shaft at the Ujoint. The bolt can break. Don't know if it's a bad heat treatment when forged?? Who knows, but they can break. it's not a driveability issue as the driveshaft is driven by the splines. But it's whiny as all get out if one or both are broken. I just bought a used rear end and slapped it in. Done. Check forks. Bouncy...progressives. Check all the gear on board, CLASS should pump and hold air, radio and tape deck should work, CB should work. Check the coolant reseavor (sp?) for clear clean coolant. OH...when you go to lift the lid for the coolant bottle, turn on the CLASS system (Key on acc position) and watch the display. If it flickers, you will have to solder the connections on the board at some point. E4 error. Easy peasy to do. The lifting of the lid flexes the connections of the white CLASS connector under there. Mine is almost all original. I did replace the rear caliper with a blue dot one. Old one finally froze up due to age and my bad maintenance. I kept forgetting it was there. My bad. Brake lines are still original. It works well and I know, should be replaced. I've had issues with cassette deck. I've worked on mine and have a couple of extras. The belts just don't hold up well with the heat and dryness around here. Sometimes, I'll push a cassette in and 5 minutes later it will start playing! I like cassettes in that I can make my own mixes. I've had plastic issues. Fixed most of them...maybe I'll get around to fixing rest....or not. Check the trunk light. Make sure it turns on/off when the lid is raised/lowered. The little switch can get dirty or wires broken. Could drain battery. Tool kit should be in bottom of right saddlebag, strapped in. Plastics look decent in pics, but verify the tabs are there by removing the fuel tank lid, and the 2 sides. You can see most of the system from there. Make sure the 2 phillips screws on the fuel fill lock are snug. Anyway...you know the rest. Just some ideas. I love my 89 but have to sell it soon. No time left with current set of toys to keep working on her. I've been slowly fixing things since I bought her...but now have to much to do and have run out of time to even ride her. Yesterdays ride was wonderful....but sad. His price seems reasonable. If in decent shape. Let's face it, these are old scoots. There will be issues. Good luck...let us know how it goes. -
Tom, I'm going to try the wooden unit. I've got packing material...so I can customize it for a good fit. I like wood....although the plastic printing idea is cool...for sure.

I still need a case too. Been to darn busy to think about things like this. Sigh!

Southern Arizona around Tucson area. Nicer weather than Phoenix, less traffic and nice 2 lane roads... Come on down...

Nice ride yesterday morning. I do like the Nogales, Patagonia, Sonoita loop run. Breakfast at the Stage Stop Inn. Still good food! It was chilly out in the morning....wanted to get an early start...but not going to put my long johns on! Arizona in May??? Really? Where's the Global Warming?? So sat around...check the scoot over then took off.... In the pic above...see the mountain range over the windshield? In previous posts where I comment on the far mountain range and where I live....well....this is the other side of those pictures. I live on the other side of that range... Stage Stop Inn.... Had a nice morning...4 hr ride. BTW, if you remember the rattlesnake from a different posting? Well....after 40 plus years in Arizona, saw my 1st Gila Monster in the wild. I walked with him for about 10 minutes as he walked down the street where I live. Pleasant enough fellow, though not much of a conversationalist....protected by Arizona law now.... As I was riding around the curves of the bird sanctuary in Patagonia, I thought...hmmm... I haven't heard from @VanRiver in sometime?? We usually meet in the Spring... So James, where art thou?? Here's hoping all is well up North!

It's not the mileage, it's the time since built. 2002 is 17 years old now...and that's lots of time for things to get dirty or corroded! The switch could just be gunked up...as I would almost be willing to bet that the bike hasn't had much maintenance either with 7K miles in 17 years. Old oil contains acids, etc.. As to your question...yes...I think it would be possible for a bad ground to the instrument cluster could cause all your issues... Take your time, and don't shotgun it. One thing at a time. Besides, I'd look at this as a good learning experience for you on learning about the RSV. They are almost to reliable...so it's a good idea to get a baseline idea of what's been done. By you doing it!

The neutral light can be various things. With me and others, it's the neutral switch which also controls the shift indicator which the RSV doesn't have. Why? I have no idea....silly for Yamaha to leave it out. From my 1989 Venture Royale, I'll point out the switch. I would "assume" the switch is still located in the same place as it's a V4. general area: Left side. Remove the intermediate gear cover (to the rear of the larger stator cover). You will need to replace the gasket and be aware the bottom screw/bolt has a tiny copper washer that needs to go back on in same spot. Intermediate gear cover off The white/cream colored switch is the neutral switch. 3 screws. Do not overtighten when putting it back in. Rear of switch. There is an "O"ring around the inside that keeps the oil at bay. Clean the contacts. So...again..."assuming" the RSV has the same set up, this is usually where the neutral switch issues come from. Other areas can be found by tracing the wiring schematics in the service manual, downloadable from this site. Dirty or bad ground in a switch that is part of the circuit that keeps the bike from starting (sidestand, emergency switch, tipover switch, etc.) or any connection in the same circuit that is dirty can cause the same issues...

Take the front fairing off. Go through all the connectors and clean and re-seat them. Use dialectric grease around the plugs before you put them back together. Don't get any grease on the pins though. Also, look for a ground lug going to the frame in the front. Should be one if memory serves...maybe two. Take the connection off, sand and clean the metal and connector and put back on. Tighten. The dash/instrument panel is plastic and the electrics need a good ground as well as a stable power source. IE, the connectors must be clean and seat well. Do all this and you should be good to go. If this fails, find a new/used instrument panel on ebay, pinwall cycle is one vendor that sells good used parts.
