1. Well...tried fitting the one damper I have to the bars last night. Duh! Never noticed I have Baron's 1 1/2" riser extensions. Those little rubbers are not going to fit the way they should now! Will have to figure something else out. The lower part of the fairing isn't hitting anything, but it's really, really close! Thoughts for a hot summer day when I can't ride...tool time!
2. Not having much experience with the 05 yet...I can only guess. Most of my past experiences with headphones and speakers come down to dirty contacts....which is why sometimes the speakers don't cutout. Maybe the Ventures are designed to leave some tunes on the speakers??? I would think that would be counter productive to a small amplifier that's struggling to be heard at 75 mph. I'm going with either a bad or dirty switch somewhere in the amp or a miss-adjusted/bad circuit if the switch is electronic. The latter would be my guess.
3. Something is to rich....for sure. Sucking off the bottom can be a major issue as well if the filter screens on top of the pickups are gone or shot. Doesn't take much to make a carb run poorly. Hope you figure it out. My biggest issue with the 89 is my right hand. Keeps wanting to crank the throttle! The 05 I don't have that same urge. Plus, the more I ride it (only had it one month), the better my mpg's are getting. Probably cleaning itself out with the Costco gas I buy and little doses of Seafoam 1st two tanks. No Seafoam this last tank just to see how things are going. Best mileage yet.
4. Well...another surprise.... The dealer guys and gals were really nice. I was 30 minutes early and they were happy to see me. Seems an RSV is a unique item! People came and went to see my scoot. 1: The new tire went on slick...they added balance beads (?) instead of weight balancing. Seemed to be ok coming home but lots of headwind/cross winds so don't really know. 2: Clutch fluid was dirty. Yep...good call, David. 3: New fuel filter was a good call as well...old one was a cheapie and was pretty dirty. 4: They went over bike with fine tooth comb...twice. Showed me everything they looked at. All as good. All on paper too...both for their records and mine. I did ask if anyone had any experience on a 1st gen...and no they don't. But one guy did say he would pull the manual and be happy to work on mine if I bring it in. He thought they should still have all the "special" tools and such. I got the feeling even the "young-uns" at the store like the big bikes! The guy who took my scoot for the test ride after service was young with a long pony tail...he was grinning! Made me smile. Oh...they did an oil change and filter as well....Yamalube 20-50weight. Total: $164.00 I'm ok with that. Yep...could have done it myself...but I wanted to try these guys out...just in case. I think they "passed the test", so to speak. Oh...Puc...forgot the trailer. Never made it to Harbor Freight. Barely had time to get breakfast and they called me that they were done! Walking back...got to watch bike go by. Not very often you get to see your scoot go by! Sure is pretty! david P.S. Mpg's up...46 mpg after 97 miles coming home. Took a detour... P.S.S. Other dealer never called me back....3 days. Sad on customer relations, me thinks.
5. Puc...shims...that's what I was trying to say! Thanks! I couldn't remember the terms. Anywho..I did that with my 650 after changing pipes and air intake. And Kevin...yea our CV carbs can somewhat compensate on their own...but not from sea level to 8,000 feet. They will run rich regardless. Need to make some changes..especially if you are running up about 9K feet in the hills. I remember that well with my Bugeye and those 2 SU's. So easy to change mixture on those with a knob at bottom of each carb as well as another knob on the distributor to change advance! Ahead of their time, those Brits in 1960! david
6. Totally agree with above. A known starting point is important when you buy a used machine. david
7. If Rick doesn't want the CD player..I'm interested in it. Would probably need the 13 pin (?) cable that runs from fairing to saddlebag as well. If it is run separately from main harness. I have a ton of CD's in my music library... Regardless....I agree the speaker holes would be easy to fill in...or a bit harder...cut out, build a box and use for sun glass storage, etc.. The tape deck and amp would be easy as well...just unbolt. Some of the wiring harness may have to stay...like the CD or CB...if they combine with main harness. May be separate...haven't looked. CB pops out. Hmm...I think you could easily get everything off..including the antennas and mounts. Just try to get as much wiring as possible. Interesting idea...with blue tooth you can do everything you currently have except maybe CB...and do so on your helmet wirelessly! david
8. At the dealer today...no one on the sales floor was aware of any new big bike coming from Yamaha. Of course, they were rather young...some still in diapers. The floor manager....(not quite so young) wistfully said he hopes Yamaha does come out with another big touring bike. He could sell it. When I rode up on the 2nd Gen....they all came out to look at the "big" bike. When I mentioned I had a 1st gen as well...I got the "Deer in the headlight look" from some and a few smiles from others. The guy who test rode my scoot after service...was all smiles, however, and was bragging to his service buddies about how comfortable the ride was. I felt good! david
9. Excellent! LOL!! Nailed it...I want two! david
10. "Prayers Up and Blessings Down Rick!! " Quote from Cowpuc. I can't say it any better! Rick...heal fast, rest easy! Your friendship and skills are appreciated more than you could know. david
11. Our are carbs adjustable? As in..are the sliders grooved to allow different settings for mixture? If yes, there is your answer, If no, another ball game. Different jet sizes. My guess would be contact a dealer in Albuquerque area...ask them about the problem. I would think they have the knowledge of jetting at higher altitude... david
12. Note to self: Never hurts to ask. This morning I called the RideNow PowerSport dealer on Ina rd in Tucson. They responded to my questions. 1: Yes they would mount the new tire for me, check the bearings, check the rim, balance, etc. for $50. 2: I asked about flushing out the clutch system...sure...$55. DOT4. 3: I asked about fuel filter...sure for the cost of filter. They will throw in a safety check on the rest of the scoot. So tomorrow morning I get a nice morning ride up to Tucson!! ... and get to go explore Harbor Freight a few doors down. Always willing to look for things to add to my wish list! david PS. the same brand dealer on 22nd street has yet to return my phone call...from yesterday. I've bought a bike from them, been in for service, bought parts...not one word back. Told the lady on the phone that they lost me...
13. I'd probably kill myself trying that. Got a little collapsable mirror I can hold down there while I'm sitting on scoot. About $3.
14. Here's some pics of my HD muffs and the way they are mounted. Not my mounting idea, but I do like it...
15. I stand corrected. So why the difference in red line management? Was it the 5 year warrantee? Or...was it a change in the motor? Curious... david
16. Yikes! After reading these posts...wish I could make it! Just no way with moving youngest back home from college, etc.. Wishing everyone a safe trip and a wonderful time! david
17. Read through the report. Interesting material there on Yamaha and it's corporate philosophy. Successes and failures. Good read...thanks.
18. Nah...since the 2nd Gen was last changed what? 5 Years ago? I'd say they stopped making changes and went right to development. Due this year.
19. What did Yamaha change on the motor to cause the rev limiter to be lowered with the 2nd gen?
20. Dion, Thanks for the link. Wish I knew why my searches didn't turn up that thread at all. I tried a whole bunch of different search terms, too! Well...now I know. Thanks again! david
21. Sometimes with plastic, once you've repaired the inside, the outside will hard to see. Just make sure when you pull the sides together, and the outside seam is nicely aligned. If the seam still bothers you after the repair, take a sharp beer can opener (old kind) and carefully run the thing along the seam. Goal here is to make a V-shaped groove. Then buy some black ABS and melt it into the groove. Stinks so be prepared. Sand flush and re-paint. david
22. I've owned two Clearviews. VStar 650 Classic and VStar 950 Tourer. 1: Like that it comes shipped with protective film...I can ride it and see if I like the height. If not, return it. As long as film is still on. Little weird riding with protective covering but you can see enough to zip around to try out screen. 2: Recurve really helps shape the wind. 3: Service, shipping and value....is top notch. I'm sure F4 is close. However, I emailed F4 over a week ago about a 1st gen windshield and have received no response yet. To be fair....same with Clearview 4 months ago. No response....from the marketing guy. So this I call a toss-up. 4: Price is comparable...plus if they have a blemished screen...it will be a bargain. Don't know enough about scratch resistance differences or construction material differences to make a determination there. My 950 Clearview is still in excellent shape after 3 years. Hope this helps, david
23. OK...was playing around with the one damper I have....I'm feeling dumb again...can't seem to figure out how that silly thing is supposed to fit?? Of course...the parts diagrams don't do any good! david
24. Hi Jim, Nope haven't done that. Not sure I need to. I'm ok with going 180 miles on a tank. My butt requires a break usually before that anyway! Good to know your gauge has two bars as well. So does that mean that the last two bars (1/4 tank) are really what's in the reserve? Guess I'll find that out after I get the bike back together. Need to do some work on scoot....then once together again...I'll fill her up and see how many gallons it took to get to that 180 mile mark. If it's about 5 gallons...then I know I have about 30 plus miles as well for reserve...good to know. Thanks for confirmation, Jim. david
