  1. Since I'm going to be leaning my trunk back at some point soon...so the back rest better fits my "Better Half"...it was suggested that I strengthen the bottom with a stainless plate. So let's take this one step further: Someone should be able to make an aluminum or stainless plate that is attached through the current 4 holes and/or bonded to the bottom. The plate would have the current contours of the bottom and offer support for the majority of the bottom. I would think using epoxy type material to repair cracks on original bottom before bonding plate to bottom would be essential to making a good repair. Thoughts, anyone?
  2. ((Truthfully, I may just end up painting both sets of bags the wine color of the bike and switch back and forth until I settle on which way to go.)) That's what I would do. Use whichever bag system suits the ride. Why? 1: Versatility. 2: You will always be pleased with the scoot.
  3. There is that!
  4. http://www.venturerider.org/forum/showthread.php?80885-Removing-the-tape-deck&highlight=removing+radio http://www.venturerider.org/forum/showthread.php?41100-tape-deck&highlight=removing+radio http://www.venturerider.org/forum/showthread.php?499-Headset-Pin-Out-Diagram http://www.venturerider.org/forum/showthread.php?73541-Mp3-on-1st-gen&highlight=remove+cassette+deck http://www.venturerider.org/forum/showthread.php?88766-PRV175-Install-Keeping-Built-in-Amp-and-Controls ++++++++++++++++++ And lots more. You have to change the search parameters to get different "looks" at the situation. Really depends upon how much you want to remove or replace. Everything from the antenna to the speakers to the CB, radio and tape deck can be removed and discarded. Hope this helps... david
  5. Take the TCI out and cut it open. There are capacitors in here that go bad. Look for heavy corrosion on circuit boards. These boards get wet and gunked up after 20 plus years. Plenty of pictures and help in previous posts.....do a search. There is even a step by step...but I can't find it right now... david
  6. TG36, Do a search of the forums. There's a ton of info here on cleaning up the bike when you take off the old audio stuff. Some members have put the replacement radio in the same area as the old stuff. Lots of pictures as well. The CB comes off the right side...the cassette, radio and amp...off the left side. One antenna wire running back to rear. Of course, this is assuming the bike is stock. Keep searching and use different search strings. Let us know what you decide and take lots of pics! david
  7. I always start with choke, then after a few minutes...off comes the choke..let her idle for a minute or so...then off I go. Habit from the car days with choke I guess.... Never had any problems...in cold weather or hot.
  8. Richard, Does everything else work as advertised?
  9. If memory serves, the control panel is a sealed unit. But I would still take the control panel out and spray some electrical cleaner in the am/fm button area...working the button. I would also spray the multi-pin contacts the panel sits into...both sides. Then look carefully at the cables between the control panel and the radio unit connections that the unit plugs into (ones you just cleaned). Last, check the wires between the bottom connectors and the wires going to the radio. I find it hard to believe three radios are bad....hence the suggestion to check out the panel itself. These units were very well built...as evidenced by the fact that they still work 25 years later. Let us know what you find... david
  10. I'm interested in same concept. Mounting the HD heavy duty license plate frame and lights is a bit much for the license plate frame on the bike. Be nice to figure out some support... david
  11. CJ.... Great ride! Thanks for the pics! Never been on hiway 50... On my list, though. David
  12. Hi, BJ.... wow... Nice run! Thanks for pics..... And BTW... scoot looks great!. That bladder thing....tea makes it worse for me! But I hear ya! Enjoy... David
  13. Check plug wires and caps. The scoots run pretty good on three cylinders...
  14. So Larry..in essence...you tilted the whole trunk back? If yes, I understand and agree...a good solid brace underneath would be perfect. Thanks! David
  15. Pie Town, New Mexico.....
  16. I concur with Bob. I shift when I feel the revs are getting up there. It's a "feeling". I try for the same revs as the `1st Gen I have. Usually that equates to around 4K. I do stay in 4th for anything under 60mph. She is comfortable at that range and gets better mpg's than if I shifted to 5th at that speed. 5th truly is an overdrive...as is 4th! BUT...the only real way for you to figure this out for yourself is to do what Flyin said...wind it out in gear and pay attention to engine vibrations and sounds as you go. When you hit the limiter...shift. You'll know when...it's like the bike throws out an anchor! Do it a few times to get the feel of your bike. Be advised...hitting the rev limiter in 4th will put you way over any speed limit in the US....so be warned. Heck...I can break the freeway speed limit down here (75) in 3rd! I would hit the limiter in only first three gears just to keep out of jail....!! BTW...when the higher rpms get excessive...that's a good indication it's time to balance the carbs. Normally, you can hardly feel the engine running these V4's are that smooth... Enjoy! david
  17. Beautiful. Enjoy the ride, the rest and the Memorial Ride.
  18. ((I often wonder what the Venture Royale could have developed into had they not abandoned it in 1993.)) My mind boggles with the thought. They were ahead of their time at that time...all they had to do was continue development.
  19. @VanRiver - Green Valley. South of Tucson. Come Fall...when I ride up to Phoenix...we should plan and meet and eat!
  20. Steve, Put the axle back in place without anything else. Does it move in/out freely? It should. If not...your pumpkin is out of line. Loosen the four pumpkin nuts, put axle back in...tighten nuts. Try axle again. Should move in/out of the rear arm holes easily. (long shot) When you tighten the axle nut, you are compressing everything into position. So there is movement between the swing arm, the bushings/bearings...etc.. Tighten the axle nut then look at the caliper, the washer, etc., can the axle still turn with a screwdriver in hole? What's to tight? The next step would be to go back to beginning and re-assemble everything..making sure the washers and stuff are in the proper place AND direction. (if memory serves isn't there a piece or two that needs to be facing one way??) OH...are the swing arm bushings good? Not compressing something in the arm? Just trying to think out loud here... Hope you can find it... david
  21. James, whereabouts in Az are you? OH...in 1986 I would have bought the Venture. Hands down.
  22. One thought when putting fairing back together. Seat the screws first before tightening them. You may have to wiggle the fairing to get the screws to thread. Other that that, it's a very easy procedure. Once off, lots of room to do things....like add LED's instead of reflectors using Dion's wiring kits! (shameless plug) Grins! david
  23. When RB gets back in the saddle...let him work over your pillow tops, Dan. If he narrows the front a tad, you'll be able to reach the ground easier. Plus he adds a touch of foam...making it a better shape. He did my VStar...the factory seat was sad....and I sold my Mustangs as the re-worked stock seat was now better! Mr. Butler...I'm waiting patiently so you can have fun with my pillow tops! david
