Venture Patch - Iron On & Wash Instructions
petekadish replied to GolfVenture's topic in Watering Hole
I am certainly no expert on this subject, but I remember those iron-on knee patches my mom used to put on my jeans when I was little. They looked pretty good until I wore them, and soon all of the corners would begin to curl-up. Iron-on patches just never seem to work as well as we think they should. I always ask my wife sew my patches on for me for that just right look. Be Safe! Pete. -
You know ..., I have wondered about why the Honda badge on the trunk is upside down as well. The tour-package was a big selling point to me. I have checked on the availability of that Hondaline luggage, and it's pretty much non-existent. It would be interesting to speak with someone who knew what those accessories originally cost. I think that the original MSRP for the base bike was around $1,700 - which is what I paid for this one, some thirty-one years later. Crazy! Petew.

It was just one of those deals that I just couldn't pass up. So, last week I closed the deal on a 1980 Honda CB750 Custom. It only has 19,350 miles on it and the only damage is one the seat where the stitching on the seat has broken (which should be a simple upholstery repair), and a hole about the size of a dime in one of the turn-signal covers on the fairing. It came complete with the original Hondaline Touring Accessory Package - detachable saddlebags, trunk and a full fairing. Aside from adjusting the carburetors, and a slight oil drip (which I have yet to determine where it's coming from), it's seems mechanically sound and runs very smooth. And yes, the weather finally cooperated enough this afternoon for me to shoot some pictures. Good thing I did it today too, it's supposed to snow and blow all day tomorrow. Here's a link to my FaceBook Pics of this bike. http://www.facebook.com/album.php?aid=2437511&id=17809521&l=8cd24966d3 Be Safe! Pete.

Trip planning - Madison, WI to South Dakota - What to see?
petekadish replied to petekadish's topic in Watering Hole
Hey Steve! Thanks for the heads-up about the Crazy Horse monument. I was up there a few years ago myself, and I agree that it is totally worth seeing. I even put together a little video from our visit there. Check this out: http://www.facebook.com/#!/video/video.php?v=588608272319 Thanks & Be Safe! Pete. -

This summer (July 16th - 26th), we're taking a trip from Utah to Madison, WI for STAR Days. After the event, we're planning on a 3-4 day ride back, and we're looking for some ideas on any can't miss spots along the way. From Wisconsin, we're thinking about heading back on 90 through Minnesota and South Dakota. Then to Wyoming and Idaho, and then back to Utah. Once we get past about the middle of South Dakota, we know were we want to go from there. I just can't figure out what there is to see between Madison, Wisconsin and South Dakota. Anyone have any recommendations for things which we want to be sure to check-out along the way? I appreciate the advice as always! Thanks & Be Safe! Pete.

I bet that there's some good things there. Pete.

Also a good suggestion. I hadn't even thought of replacing the sprocket. I'll be sure to do that as well. I just want to get everything as ideally tuned-up as I possibly can. Like I mentioned ..., it's already in really good shape. But, it can certainly use a little more of my own TLC. Thanks! Pete.

Any helpful sites would be appreciated. Thanks! Pete.

Yeah, I only paid $1,900 for it. I got it off a friend, and since it was in exceptional condition, I offered him a few hundred more from his initial asking price. I road it last night for about 15 miles and I was so tickled about how tiny it feels compared to my '07 Venture. It feels like a mountain bike! I think that the first two things I will tackle on it, are putting on some new brakes and a new chain. Does anyone have any recommendations regarding chains, or are they all pretty standard O-Ring configurations? Be Safe! Pete.

I just picked-up a 1980 Honda CB 750 Custom, with only 19,000 miles. It's in great shape and it even came with original Hondaline Accessories - including a full fairing, saddlebags, and a trunk. I would like to get this bike tuned-up and in as tip-top shape as possible. Does anyone have any tips on great sites I could visit for this bike. My Venture questions and issues are all addressed here on this site. Now, I need something for this old Honda. I think that this CB 750 will will make for a pretty reliable second bike. Now, I just need to get as familiar with it as I am with my Venture. Thanks & Be Safe! Pete.

If the numbers are down due to the information being maintained as more current, well then that's probably a good thing. There were a couple of times during the past few years when I pulled-out the list while on the road, and I was kind of surprised how many phone numbers weren't good. On the other hand, I do remember sending out a call for help from Taos, New Mexico when I thought that my rear brakes were about to fail, and it was a Saturday night and I was sitting in a KOA Kampground wondering if I should press on to Colorado or fall behind on my travel schedule and wait for a shop to open the following Tuesday. And, one of our amazing members responded to my plight, and told me if I could make it about 100 miles in the opposite direction I was traveling, that he would pull the rear brake pads of his own bile and put them on mine to get me on my way. Sorry, I can't even remember who it was anymore, but I will always remember his generous offer to help. The rest of the story ... after a lot of thought and prayer, we decided to take a chance and ride through to Colorado very carefully, where the local shop took excellent care of us and sent us on our way. Be Safe! Pete.

What are the odds of catching this on video?
petekadish replied to helomech's topic in Watering Hole
Deer are everywhere here in the U.S., and experienced riders try to always be on the lookout for them. The fewer of them we see near the roads, the safer we feel. But, I have to admit ..., I would love to see some kangaroos bounding around in the wild once in a while - just not on the roads. Be Safe! Pete. -
"Darlene" has started to groan when I first mount her
petekadish replied to bknsaddle's topic in Watering Hole
This winter, and for the second year in a row on my Venture with 47,000 miles on it, I again began to hear the "groan" as the cold weather set-in (and no, it wasn't my bones - but they kinda groan as well). So, I began carefully researching everyone's comments regarding this issue here on this site. I then printed them out and presented my findings to my dealer. I explained that while the groaning was not necessarily a "shock-failure", it appeared to be a strong indicator of a potential or pending shock-failure. I also pointed out to my dealer that there were in fact a number of individuals who had their shocks replaced under warranty, and that I would also like mine replaced rather than just trying to make the groan go away with lubrication. Well ..., I'm a happy camper now. Escape Motorsports in Provo, Utah took care of me and replaced my groaning rear shock - all under warranty. Without the supporting information from the VentureRiders on this site, I'm sure that I would not have such a strong case in requesting this service. Thanks to Escape, and to all of you for your great contributions! Be Safe! Pete. -
There's just not much comment which needs to be made to introduce this video. The video itself pretty much sums it all up. Enjoy & Be Safe! Pete. [ame=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xZ15mbuE_pw&feature=player_embedded]YouTube - Let's Ride Motorcycle![/ame]

We road The Chief Joseph Highway and The Bear-tooth Pass last summer. Amazing! Even in a car it would be an awesome drive. And yes, the weather up in those parts can shift and change at a moment's notice - and, it's usually to something colder. And, don't forget to check out Utah. Lots of awesome sites to see here. Be Safe! Pete.

I can hardly believe this story . I have ridden out to the Shoe Tree twice over the past couple of years. It was such a fun and unique site to see. http://www.facebook.com/album.php?aid=2420572&id=17809521&l=bb6cce3228 ____________________________ Updated: Jan 05, 2011 12:34 PM MST ...Well known 'shoe tree' destroyed FALLON, NV (CBS) - Authorities are investigating who cut down the historic "shoe tree" in Nevada. The tree is located about 50 miles east of Fallon, NV, and is believed to be decades old. "On New Year's Eve, some patrons came in here and they said, ‘Did you notice the shoe tree got chopped down?' and everybody is in disbelief," said Greg Del Pepozzo, owner of a local store. "We went and looked out the window and it's not there anymore." Churchill County Sheriff Ben Trotter said it did not happen on private property and may not be a crime, but they are looking into whether it was vandalism. The Nevada Tourism Commission said the tree got its name after an argument between newlyweds, during which one tossed the others shoes in the tree. When they reconciled, the other reciprocated, and people have thrown shoes into the tree ever since. A memorial where the tree was located is planned for 2:30 p.m. Feb. 13.

Please let me know if you would like any ride tips or location suggestions regarding Utah. I am very familiar with much of the state and many of it's seemingly endless places to visit. Beside, it would also be fun to personally show you around the Salt Lake City area and around our beautiful mountains, canyons. There are lots of friendly STAR folks around here! Pete. http://www.star431.com http://www.star152.org

There are a number of us who would be excited to share our amazing mountains, picturesque deserts, and carve some canyons with you. Just make sure that you're long enough to see more than a tiny fraction of it. There's a lot more to Utah than just Moab. Just give us a little longer to get the snow melted. Be Safe! Pete.

My backrest is actually a "Utopia", which I had re-covered by Corbin when they built and covered my Duel-Tourer seat. Pretty much all of the reviews of the Utopia or the Diamond-R seats which I had read are very good. I have been perfectly happy with mine ever since I bought it. I also had Corbin build me a convenient little pocket with a Velcro flap in my backrest where I keep my fuel-record book and a few other small odds & ends. I can send you some detailed close-ups if you like. As far as your wife getting off the rear seat ..., my wife (Sandy), learned this little tip from another woman which she always uses now. This is the way she does it: When I stop, I put the kickstand down. With me standing over my seat and with both hands on the handlebar grips, Sandy swings her right leg over my backrest, pivots on her rear-end, and then slips-off the bike like you would get up off of a chair. This technique works pretty well for her, and helps her from having to either swing her right leg over the trunk or having to step off over the rear seat - both kind of awkward moves for some of us folks who are a little older than we used to be. Happy New Year & Be Safe! Pete.

Imagine seeing this on a bike in Yellowstone
petekadish replied to friesman's topic in Watering Hole
I like to pull off to the side of the road where nothing is going on, and then start pointing and staring off in to the distance, and then soon as a bunch of cars pull over to see what I'm looking at ..., drive off. -
This sounds like the beginning of an identity crisis. Wouldn't this turn all of the H.D.s in to Indians? And ..., I can just imagine what it will be like for all of those H.D. customers having to call customer service/support and having to deal with those call center representatives over there. Pete.

I have seen the process of professionally "claying" a vehicle on television, and it was pretty interesting. For those not familiar with the process, it's kind of like what we used to do when we were kids with Silly Putty and the Sunday funnies. The process is supposed to lift road-grime out of the pores of the paint. And, from what I saw on TV, it looks like it works really well. What I wonder though, is would the results be noticeably different on a black (Midnight Venture kinda black), paint job. Typically, I keep my bike obsessively cleaned and polished anyway, but would "claying" on an already really clean, black bike make any worthwhile difference. If it doesn't, I don't want to waste the money. That detailing clay is expensive. Thanks! Pete.
