I checked the U-joint and all looked well; nice and tight, it was pretty clean in there too. I have the wheels back on, everything tightened IAW the book. I'm looking for that little black bracket that holds the lock in place on the right side saddle bag, the little, tiny screw that holds the bracket to the lock is MIA too. I had to remove the lock because it wouldn't turn far enough to get the saddle bag off the bike....I think I will be riding tomorrow night! I picked up some Stainless Steel screws that hold the windshield. These are a touch longer so they start a bit easier. I have new seals for the elbow by the water pump, I hope to install these soon; the leak is pretty slow but nevertheless it's a leak.... The needle bearing in this 2nd wheel...the needles don't rotate at all... NORMAL? I replaced the 2 bearings in the wheel but not the outer needle bearing in the drive, Yamaha says it rarely needs replacing...any thoughts on that?

So what's the big deal?

I was a C-130 mechanic for 5 years in the USAF. I cross trained into Transportation Maintenance thinking I would get out of that mobility stuff....It didn't work out so well.... Anyway... No one explained the brake to me, I don't think I ever played with the brakes....anyway your explanation makes a whole lot of sense to me... however this isn't something that gets removed routinely like a tire on aircraft but I bet you're righ because the thinking probably transferred to the clutch from the brake design side of the engineering house....yeah; I think you're right! -

I would try a hydraulic supply outfit, or you could start with an outfit that lifts trucks, installs suspension upgrades for towing, air suspension systems suppliers...I'm sure the fittings are metric, it wouldn't take much to make an adapter though if you got a drill press and a tap and die set... -

I'm no engineer. It's been my experience that you USUALLY can't go too far wrong installing parts or performing repairs the way the manufacturer recommends. HOWEVER!!! Yamaha is LONG on telling WHAT to do but really SHORT on HOW to do. Yamaha went to the expense of producing a video (we used to call them "training films" but then we used to refer to another kind of film as "Training film(s) too huh Gunny?) showing how to install the clutch disks and plates. -
Exactly how do I jumper the CMS.
dna9656 replied to MasterGuns's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
Hey Gunny! So far as I know LEDs don't make any heat, maybe these do I donno. I sure would like to know how to jumper the 83 to 85 CMU for this and the rest of the LEDs in the running/tail/blinker apps. Maybe in this app the CMUs are the same? -
To all those (and you know who you are) that are into lots of lights on your bike; be they LEDs or incandescent here's an idea for you! What if you could make any surface light up with electricity? Imagine all the body work on your bike becomes a brake light whenever you use the brakes? There is the option of your whole bike glowing like a low flying UFO! Check this out!!!! What am I looking for, obvious damage, excessive play (slop), in all.....anything else?

OK I got the old bearings out, the new ones in and while it was off I took the wheel down to a guy that mounted and balanced my new tire (from Amazon) for a KILLER price!!! So it's out to the shop to put it back together, hopefully I can go for a ride tomorrow!

Well the bearings I originally ordered for this project arrived today. I am just going to remove the bearings now in the replacement wheel (the outer race of the needle bearing is in the original wheel forever I'm afraid) this weekend. I'm just too bushed to start thatjob tonight. I can ride the Road Star till the VR is up and running.

There is a torque chart in the manual that might have the figures you seek. A word on the FSM: It's OK on telling you WHAT; but short on telling you HOW.

Wow what a thread! A long time ago I had a Yamaha 750 Special (triple) Street bike. Some liked it, some didn't. Anyway it had a leaky folk seal. It had those boots over the seals too. Well I ordered a set of fork seals from Dennis Kirk. I put them on with some tranny fluid as lube. One seal still weeped a little....o at work we had a hydrological shop and in their consumables they had some seal back ups; (name is prob wrong) they were made of Teflon, it was three or four turns long, if you stretched it out it looked like a spring but would collapse like a slinky toy. I wrapped this around the fork tube under the boot and above the seal and my problem went away. I am inclined to agree with Skydoc, if there's no nicks on the fork tube those bushings could be the issue and probably are. If it isn't this I know that hydraulic actuators can get re-chromed and repaired, I had a guy that sandblasted the actuators on a Mobilizer in the military, we send them down town for a re-chrome and polish, worked like a champ when we god them back.....forks are a lot like actuators....

All; When I got the bike I didn't have any tech data so I thought that the bearings I found were the axle bearings; they weren't' they were the ones you see when the diferential(?) is off; I lubed them.... Here is what I found: http://i280.photobucket.com/albums/kk195/dna9656/th_IMG_0409.jpg http://i280.photobucket.com/albums/kk195/dna9656/th_IMG_0408.jpg http://i280.photobucket.com/albums/kk195/dna9656/th_IMG_0414.jpg Collars new and old. I have the spacer out too, it's rusted but serviceable (cleaned up on the wire wheel) I believe. If any want top see a pic let me know. Now the larger bearing came out, it was missing 3(?) balls. The outer race of the needle bearing (the inner race and needles are on the floor) is corroded in there. I Dremelled the inner bearing race of the needle bearing till it was thin in a space of about 3/16ths" wide then tried to cut the thinned out outer race. I think the hub is FUBAR. It's not moving or breaking. I think it's seized in there pretty tight. I have 2 other rear wheels on hand. Opinions?

I see a LOT of questions about the same/different part(s) used for such and such a year or that another year. So far as I know; and from what the wise heads here have taught me is that Yamaha changes the part number when the part changes. In other words if you need to find out if the kanutsenator for the thingamajig on the 1987 Zort fits the '85 or 96 model look it up in the parts catalog. So far as I know the whole fleet shares the same muffler bearings...

No; because all over the site it says "coming soon" or "this is beta test". -
Oil level is correct, 1/2 up the site glass.

I thought they were decorative! I will order some plugs and replace them just for the piece of mind.... Thanks Kevin! -
Funny you should mention that black spot. That black spot actualy turns clear, the spot under the exhaust is carbon and water from the washing it got yesterday! the spots appear to change color in each picture. they are from opposite sides of the bike! Isn't that wild?! [/img]

<img src=[/img]

As some of you know my '84 VR is on the lift for a rear wheel bearing transplant. So I found oil on the lift deck. I think one is from the cylinder COVER, Cap (the striped rectangle on the side of the cylinders); from the right front cylinder; does anyone have any ideas on the other?
-
No not yet; I just got home! I have 2 spares if it's worn. You're talking about the hub that holds the 5 or 6 studs...what would I be looking for (or did you already cover that criteria?) I was getting ready to go get the wheel off the bike. ALSO I noticed in the "DRIVE SHAFT" IPB (Illus. Pts. bkdn) that there are MORE bearings inside it. Shouldn't these need to be replaced as well?
-
So is there ANY reason I shouldn't, can't, or need more, MAY need more parts to install the spare wheel I have on the bike until the parts get here? Could I need a shim where the 4 studs on the wheel assembly connect to the swing arm? I see they are no longer available but came in 30, 40 and 50 thousandths...shouldn't be too hard to get some made....I know a man..... There is no shim on my bike currently...how do I determine if I need one? I bet this is a machinist's job needing dial indicators and machinist's bluing to check gar patterns right?
-
Yes I have the manual; the manual that tells WHAT but not a very good job at telling HOW. I have changed wheel bearings in cars and trucks, transmissions, transfer cases etc. and installed seals in same. I have put bearings in LOTS of stuff, I have done my own (most of) car and truck work all my life. I'm 58, spent 20 years in the USAF in aircraft and vehicle maintenance. I know that when you smack a bearing with a 2.5 lb. hammer and drift for 20 minutes it should move, the bearings in the front of my VR didn't and I really couldn't get a good contact patch on the bearing anyway. I was reluctant to put any heat on the aluminum, I have a map gas hand held torch. Tomorrow I will experiment on the spare rear wheel I have.
-
So when I tried to remove the FRONT wheel bearings it was next to un-doable so that job went to the dealer. Anybody got any words of wisdom on removing the rear wheel bearings?

Like flyin' said "Yes it is at the lever. There are 4 wires going into it as there are 2 separate switches that are clutch activated. One is for the starter circuit and the other is for the cruise control. My bike is still buried under snow so I can not get you a pic for a few weeks yet." I would be getting into the parts book, there you will find IPBs (Illustrated Parts Breakdown) or Exploded Views of the assemblies. This way you will learn the systems and where everything is. I'm still learning... I know there is the one on the clutch "LEVER" (or handle as you an i would call it) and there is one in the engine/transmission case and tough to get to. The switch I have is the side stand switch. If you've ruled that one out you know it's one of the others...The weather here is a balmy 60 so we have no snow and my bike is on the lift, plenty of guys here have pics though, Kevin and Dingy come to mind as the Picture Boys....
