GM in-car distraction systems, whether you want it or not.
baylensman replied to CaseyJ955's topic in Watering Hole
I don't think we need to get distracted by your 2004 bowtie being more reliable than someone else 2005 blue oval or 2001 Male sheep. I have over 30 vehicles in the fleet several of the FORDS have well over 250K miles and so do several of the CHEVYS one has almost 350K miles. These are vehicles that are overloaded and driven by guys who don't own them or pay for the repairs. I've also got several NISSAN diesels approaching a half million miles, while the FREIGHTLINER lives in the repair shop. As far as ford and the "SOUND TUBE". Vehicle owners of both V8 cars and the turbo cars complained of not enough engine noise, IE the cars are too quiet and noise is part of feedback or road feel. The sound isn't over the speakers but rather a pipe that ducts under hood noise to the under dash area (first thing you remove when upgrading the super charger or turbos). I've had 1 touch climate control since 1987 is all my cars (FORDS) I've never been confused by the knobs dials sliders or button after the first couple days in the car. The 7" infotainment screen that i had retro fitted to my 96 Mark viii is as easy to ignore as anything else, it flashes and carries on every time a song changes on the radio and even plays the lyrics on some of them, i only use it in reverse. I believe all cars should have a permanently on radio receiver, that can over ride all the systems in the car so that COPS can tell you to get off the damn phone and pull over. Recent case of a women driving almost 7 miles thru town around various corners and intersections, being chased by police who were trying to let her know that the child in the back seat had gotten out of the seat belt, and was lying on the rear shelf. Her excuse for not pulling over!! Talking to her new boyfriend . Good and careful drivers like us will adapt to the ever changing vehicle layout (its been years since I've gotten my foot caught in the steering wheel trying to turn down the hi beams) While the're will be people who will be unable to handle autonomous vehicle and somehow still mange to crash! -
Lot's of folks out there doing it others making money selling kits.http://www.biodieselcommunity.org for Information. I'D have to wonder what is the break even on the cost to do it right versus buying fuel? Then there's the cost of repairs and filters if you don't do it exactly right. I know in our area there is some competition for used fry oil. Most of the restaurants in the area now have an all or nothing policy on recovery also. So for the most part the big guys are edging out the little guys. Think about it a company (WM or other recycler) invests in the correct equipment and then takes all the used fry oil. over their fleet of trucks they can amortize quickly

I've had a slip jaw wrench since the early 70's . They are not new! they come and go. Absolutely the best tool every when I was repairing bicycles and assembling swing sets.

As above it sounds like a pump issue. However the honda and other "easy pull" engine have a small bump on the cam shaft to release compression. The bump is so small that at run speed it has no effect but on the pull of the rope it just enough to stop that kick. That may have been smooth out over the years or there is crud under the valve spring. Just my 2 cents

The times are changing, I read an business article a few weeks back. It turns out most on line retailers loose money!! Those that do make a profit, its very small. Many retailers see it as a necessary adjunct to their brick and mortar stores. Those big retailers that invested to heavily in their gamble for online supremacy at the expense of their retail real locations are on the skids (Sears and Macys) while those that just use the web as an adjunct and don't give merchandise away to compete with EBay (Walmart Home depot and Jc penny) have climbed back into profitability rather quickly after the last economic slow down. We will probably see more of the ONLINE only outlets start to close up on us. This really affects older bikes and cars and any one into esoteric items (Russian ammo, Electronics). I'm already ordering two or three items from the UK because there is no longer a US based online outlet.

For the RSV 2nd generation the Broview S5 seems to be the bulb of choice. Good scatter direct fit. more light than stock with a lower consumption. Sold in sets of 2 usually still can find them on Amazon for $50-$55 .

v-max rear questions?
baylensman replied to baylensman's topic in Royal Star Venture Tech Talk ('99 - '13)
SO the link for Blue ridge MX is down the site is no longer available, Does anyone have alternate contact info for that company or john furbar or others who would do the Vmax gear change for me? -
IMHO the biggest need post disaster, is knowledge! Not food Not ammo not even a good knife. All of those are useless without the brains to know how and WHEN to use them. I know several "Preppers" They all boast about there "Stash". But, when you ask them Do you know how to prepare freeze dried food, skin or dress a carcass, dress a serious wound? I get blank stares, or Wife can cook, partner is nurse ect, then I ask if its a disaster and they don't make it what do you do?

I'm thinking this is my next project. A few questions for the experienced among us. I see a few rears out there with and with out drive shafts for sale. in the $95-$195 range. There is one a few hours from me right in the middle of that range. 1. reading the install and looking at the pictures. IS this a housing to housing swap, or do I pull gears the pictures look one one the write up seems to be the opposite way? 2. Not clear on the drive shaft issue, use the one from the V-max or the one on my bike? 3. which housings do swap? to fit my 2007 RSV?

As usual I come here and read "what's new" Then I start down the rabbit hole, someone ask about rebuild part whatever, i start searching myself because i'm curious because I may need to do it in the future. Here's my Thought/idea. Take time to search these forums and the other one (shhI know don't talk about them here) Assemble all the tips and tricks and organize them like a shop manual. So we get section one. general service and specs. section two engine issues, section three brakes and so on. If it gets organized along the lines of the shop manual it would be great because as we know the "MANUAL" does contain some incomplete information as well as outright errors. I for one would gladly pay $$ for a copy. Perhaps It could be a joint effort and benefit ST judes?

Here is something painful to watch
baylensman replied to Du-Rron's topic in Royal Star Venture Tech Talk ('99 - '13)
Finally took the time to watch the vid. I'll be kind and say "he was nervous" when making the video. there is free editing software for videos out there. A little editing and it wouldn't have been so bad. As an editorial on how not to doit and be fumble fingered it was enlightening to say the least. -
Ride on and thump?
baylensman replied to baylensman's topic in Royal Star Venture Tech Talk ('99 - '13)
Again this morning it was chilly for florida (58' at 5;30 a.m.) I paid very carefully attention. I back up without power of course about 25 feet along the edge of driveway around her car to the center of the street. I start the bike and felt the "thump" it lasts less than 100 feet not yards, basically two and half lots, before it is no longer noticeable. 100 feet is what about 30 revolutions of the rear tire? So I guess i'm just being to sensitive -
We tend not to wax political on this site, so I'll keep it short and let you draw your own conclusions. 10 years ago or more (2006) under a conservative president with a mostly conservative legislature my Son decided to marry a girl from Columbia that was here on a "Student" visa. 1 trip to the Consulate in Miami for a certified copy of registration of birth (4 hours away) 1 trip to Tampa (45 minutes) to get paperwork fingerprint and photo, second trip to tampa to turn it all in and do an interview. Two weeks later I get a phone call as her sponsoring answer 2 or 3 questions. Two weeks after that, in the mail is a green card updating her permanent resident status, she is now an american citizen having taken the test and sworn the oath. Of course they're no longer married. Look what our Friend is going thru now. HMMMM. Around the same time(2008) My friend Phil retired from the county sheriffs office. he was fully vested in the pension plan at $3800 per month for life. At the time he was also putting away cash in a department run investment for retirement paid out over $400K. As the county refused pay out on overtime beyond 8 per week and he worked every detail and never took a vacation, he was owed 3000 hours compensation which was paid out at his closing rate as a corporal and differential for being both a vehicle and weapons trainer and riot specialist another $110k. This year Jimmy took early retirement from the same department, the last two years riding a desk as sergeant, New rules $3000 a month no lump sums dispersant of accrued time, now paid out monthly over 5 years, department run investment same deal lower payout and its over at the same 5 year period ( at some point the inputed CASH values were taken out of the annual documents) So instead of almost 1/2 million dollars of investable income around $240K over 5 years! There seems to be a theme among those on here that have recently retired as to their financial situation compared to those a few years before them. Folks its only going to get worse every politician on the continent sees every pool of retirement money whether is a pension plan a company annuity private investment, as an untapped resource to spend themselves back into office.

I believe there is a fill port on the top of the converter housing. at the far end from there is a plug to pull and check fluid level. Its like the old 4 cycle lawn mowers fluid should be visible after plug is pulled. No dip stick.

Ride on and thump?
baylensman replied to baylensman's topic in Royal Star Venture Tech Talk ('99 - '13)
A further point i've been overly sensitive to the quality and condition of my Rides over the years. Even on dirt bikes I could "feel" when something was stuck in a tread or rubbing under the fender. I'm also that way with cars. I can drive a car with the window up and a/c on and "feel" something that is off even when its minor. I've never had brakes pads hit the rotor, never drove more than a few miles with a flat. Or actually went any distance with something not right with out at least doing a temporary fix, until proper maintain could be done. I guess that's why I've never had a major failure, except for bad units from the factory (early 70's GM transmissions come to mind) -
So i did my own rear tire 6 months back, its been great. I installed ride on with the new tire. I've noticed the past few mornings, its a little cooler now in florida at 5:30 am. The rear tire has a thump thump thump for about the first 100 yards at low speed, the thump lessens then goes away and I don't feel it again the rest of the day. Even after the bike sits for 10 hours outside of work. Now yesterday it was very pronounced for that 100 yards but again went away. I didn't ride at all over the past weekend. The SO needed my around so I didn't get out. So that is longest the bike has sat in months. My question is as the Ride on is a liquid can it pool or puddle at the bottom of the tire, especially after a longer period of sitting? Then redistribute as it moves?

https://www.yamahamotorsports.com/sport-touring/models/2019/niken mama Yama has it listed as a touring bike right after the sport tourer or at the bottom of the lists. Available mid 2018 saw one listing for pricing at around mid $18,000's. May just be an alternative to a convertible as my knees get weaker but I can't see any listing for a reverse option?
-
Same light on Amazon is $40 cheaper. also on Amazon literally dozens of alternatives at 1/10th the price. I'd be afraid of turning my wrist and getting a flare on the windshield and blinding my self. I honestly can't think of a circumstance riding that it would be helpful. Now off the bike making roadside repairs maybe? Just my two cents worth:2cents:

Notice the air induction looks kind of vaderesque in this photo. Come on Mama Yama I WANT IT.

Sorry my PHOTOSHOP skills aren't the best. But I was daydreaming. I'm a STAR WARS fan andI love the Yamaha Raider and I think the V-max is an uncomfortable ride and poorly laid out but like the power so here it is. THE VADER 145HP V-MAX stuffed into a raider frame. Upgrade to the Bullet cowl version and get the 7" infotainment system and targeting computer!! Just like bulls eyeing womprats in beggars canyon back home!!

cooling fins, weather riding
baylensman replied to cruiserlover's topic in Royal Star Venture Tech Talk ('99 - '13)
neat effect did you paint the fins and dog bones to match the tank or is the camera just picking up all that blue? -

Yes there is less because we allow it. I res up in a house with 1 phone stuck to the wall, 1 TV set with 3 channels, and a shelf full of board games and another with encylopedias. As mom and dad both started to work to get the finer things CORP America found more stuff to sell us. Most families started out in apartments or bungalows and lived there through the birth the first and sometimes second kid before buying a "Starter" home, now young people are getting 100% mortgages and paying over half of their combined income to get a MCMansion. Reread both our posts I think we agree there's no money left but for different reasons.
