To pay or not to pay at the pump? That is the question..
baylensman replied to snyper316's topic in VR Polls
I've been lucky I guess. It happens in western florida all the time. According to a special report we have the highest incident of "Skimming" in the US right now. It has happened to dozens of people here at work and others at the park. The thing is even on debit cards you get your money back eventually, its either the store or the bank left holding the bag which means we all get to pay. You can buy card readers on line now for $20.00 and the flimsy coke machine locks most pumps have that cover the card reader are a joke. A guy pulls up, the passenger open his door to block the view, with in a minute. the door is open the new reader is installed and cable jumped to the main board so you get your gas, and the skimmer has your card number and pin in storage. Many of these skimmers looks so good many times pumps are opened and they aren't noticed. Some even have blue tooth so you don't have to reopen the pump to get your data! In many cases here in FL the thieves even carry "SECURITY" tape and put it over the door after the're done. -
I have RIDE ON in both tires and carry a compressor. I know this will start a fight in church I also carry a plug kit! Personally I've ridden for 52 years and have had plugged tires on those bikes with out tubes numerous times, and have never had a failure. When I was in the biz for cars I'd plugged literally hundreds of tires both belted and radial and never had a blow out failure due to the plug. I've also hot vulcanized inside patches both in the tread/belt area and the sidewall. I remember back in 1975 one girl came into the station at 8:30 with a flat, she couldn't afford the cost of the plug let alone a new tire. I did a freebie, the boss had gone home! I plugged the tire and moved it and its mate to the rear of ver VW bug and sent her home. 6 months later she brought the car to us for its state inspection, still had the tire on her car!

I'm also in the ride it like I stole it camp! I routinely drive in the 80+ category daily!! With the new F4 windshield i have little to no buffeting. As I cross the century mark its still okay as long as I'm accelerating when Level off at around 105 is when i notice the bags and trunk shaking a bit and the re-entry tiles falling off and other goofy stuff happening. So I've learned it likes 95 but not 105. PS Blue over black really the fastest color

Bike maintaining day for me!
baylensman replied to baylensman's topic in Royal Star Venture Tech Talk ('99 - '13)
I ride almost every day so the carbs have fresh fuel always. I use a rubber dressing and have never had an issue with slippage. I do use a quality vinyl dressing on the rest and it doesn't get slippery. I haven't filled and flushed fresh brake fluid I'll add that to the list. I guess i'll add the rear also. looks like i've got the whole weekend filled. -
So as the weather may suck ( calling for wind and rain ) I'm planning on the big spring maintenance on the bike. This is what I know i'm doing and would like suggestion as to anything else that should be addressed at the 22,000 mile mark? i've read about changing fork oil? I have no problems with the front end, i don't however have the service record for the first 5 years or 15,00 miles from the previous owner. is this something i should check? I have had the rear wheel off and did the lube on the splines and what not when i changed the rear tire. 1. Oil and filter 2. Carb sync 3. wash and lube KN filters 4. front brake pads 5. Rewire horn relay. 6. Double check all the wiring and placement of LED pods and there AUX lighting. 7. Grab a spray can of lube and get under the bike while its up in the air and Lube all the moving parts I see. 8. Put the Harley slips on back on. 9. A through cleaning with Magnum motorcycle juice, tire dressing, upholstery dressing.

Okay so I have synched the carbs and understand the process and it worked well in making the bike much more responsive. However, when syncing we are just bring the 4 units in line with each other at some arbitrary point. I'm wondering how I would go about leaning out all 4 carbs? While the bike runs well when idling its a bit rich, others have commented on the raw gas smell, its not like a dead hole or even eye watering you can just smell that slightly sweet note of unburned gas. The flip side is at a cold start even at 70" I need to either use the choke or jockey the throttle for 30 seconds or so to keep it running, after that it won't stall at all. Also my MPG is still on the low side of acceptable (30-32) around town. So the bike has KN filters and I switch back and forth between stock mufflers and Harley Pipes depending on how many canadians are in residence in the park, no other mods yet. Bike has 22K miles.

Wolo horns question
baylensman replied to baylensman's topic in Royal Star Venture Tech Talk ('99 - '13)
I'm thinking that might be it. If i remember correctly i had voltage to ground from both horn leads and one dropped to zero when i pushed the button. I'm wondering if the drivers side horn is in series with the other horn not in parallel like most cars. I yank it apart again this weekend (doing front brakes also) and try goin direct to the battery with the POS lead and hooking the ground to the relay and seeing if that makes a difference. -
Wolo horns question
baylensman replied to baylensman's topic in Royal Star Venture Tech Talk ('99 - '13)
tried both ways the wire is all 14 guage both hot and ground. Its weird as if the relay take voltage away instead of increasing. When i put the two stock wires direct to the horn and bypass the relay its louder! -
So I have a set of WOLO horns, when I first mounted them. I had hooked them up direct to the original leads for the R/H horn. They were extremely loud! I then followed all the directions on this site ( didn't buy the harness or relay here) as to wiring up a relay, this allowed me to move the horns down and use the offset stainless bracket that was bought on this web site. Well to make a short story longer, the horns now are muted, if i pull the horn and the side cover and go direct again the horns are loud enough to make me jump when I'm the one pushing the button. I've tried three relays now and have gone over the wiring diagram on this site multiple times and even changed wires around and still can't get the horns loud using the relay. i'm thinking of only using the trigger wire from the original harness to the 86 pin on the relay and using a separate ground on the 85 pin and taping off the other wire. Will this put to much "strain" on the remain horn wire on the left side?

So I've read the articles with the same fervor as a starving termite finding a balsa wood airplane. I've sat on a bunch and driven a few, and talked to countless owners at local bike nights ( you'd get the idea that I like bikes) I've come up with a few observations. Who's buying, for the most part ( again non scientific poll here) middle to upper middle aged or pre retirement types ( bulk not all) Mostly guys , mostly have had other bike bikes before, most also drive later model trucks! I was shocked but I'd say 70 or so of the folks over the past two months have had a late model pick up trucks in the stable either as a back and forth or a work vehicle. What I got from most was the big three COMFORT, POWER and EASE OF USE. Most want seamless integration with their phones as a number 1 or 2 priority, They also don't want to fight with the wind or keep bugs out of their teeth Its not about the fastest but about the "feel" of speed, Most everyone wanted to "feel" that being thrown back punch as they accelerated. Not crazy fast like a VMAX or BMW but being able to pass someone or pull up on a ramp without up shifting and down shifting like a madman. They all said i want to be able to use my phone of the bike with out having to pull over or hook up 6 different cables to my helmet. Considering it an older crowd who grew up with travel tickets and folding paper maps the insistence on GPS was amazing even for those who never get more than 100 miles from home. In summation I think both Yamaha and HD came close to what the main street market wants. Talking to a few of the younger guys, the biggest factor in getting a tourer is the rear seat and the second passenger, quite frankly mama enjoys her comfort also. One gal told me I had him buy the "Oh ****" handles for the Harley the first week, because she wanted to hold on when she stuck her face into the wind. I see the evolution of the tourer like the 80's mid to full size cars, gas mileage, power, reliability are second place to number of speakesr and total number of cup holders and whatever gimmick tech is next. Which bike will the be the first to handle a whole six pack! We've gotten to the point where having a total LED light package is more important than displacement! Whats next retractable rain shelters? Power assist braking and steering? How far are we as bikers going to go in removing us from the "experience". Not us per se but the next generation of riders or should I say buyers.

Windshield Questions....
baylensman replied to BratmanXj's topic in Royal Star Venture Tech Talk ('99 - '13)
I have the tallest F4 they make with the vent and tinted. You won't notice the tint but it does help. the vent is perfect I'm 6ft and the girlfriend sits with her helmet just above mine and has no buffeting issues. The F4 is also great in the rain, it sheds water like a ducks back. Also the F$ is just a touch wider it really helps with the hands. -

YAMAHA ALREADY HAS A ROBOT DRIVER TO TEST BIKES. HOW LONG TILL THE SOFTWARE GOES IN THE BIKE AND WE HAVE SELF DRIVING BIKES? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ISz8Mvs7GcE -
Funny thing that, a few years ago when the exchange rate went the other way, I didn't see or hear and Canucks offering to pay in Canadian bucks for US good and services especially here in little Canada, Largo FL. Population fell 30% this week as they all started for home!

AS others have stated we don't know what lead up to the "INCIDENT" was the biker trying to get the cars attention (cell phone or wallet on the roof? Something few off car earlier? Or just trying to get the guys attention for a real or imagined infraction?) There is simply no excuse for what was done in that video, I don't care what lead up to it good or bad. The car and its driver were in no imminent danger. Escalation of violence is its own crime in certain jurisdictions. I Agree than any biker who challenges a car had better be ready to move, don't assume the other guy won't dare to respond.

So i get to work early this morning (5:15 a.m.) As i pull I up I see the Bosses bike parked in the first slot. (boss is also my little brother). I thumb in and head into the accountants office and grab my morning load of papers. Say hello to all and as im heading ou,t bump into little bro, ask him about latest trip and so on. He follows me out the door ( i work in another building and drive over to it) we start talking bikes for a few minutes. He's showing off his new handle bars ( new harley can take up to 14" without changing cables) After market drive off center stand ( I wish i had one) His new driving lamps ( hi intensity LED) everything bought and installed at daytona last week. As we walk around the bike I see he has no hi way pegs! well it seems that his new dealer installed peg fell the f$@k off!! so he took the other off so as to match. He found the missing peg in his saddle bag! the newly made front vent on the saddle bag allowed easy entry. The new vent closes covertly with fiber reinforced packing tape! This began a rather long recital of other bits and pieces that have come loose or needed adjustment on the bike he got in october of 2017! Now I can't really say much as I lost a 6 mm bolt in my shifter in the past 10 years, so I can't claim that Im that much more reliable.

no idea whats wrong, PLEASE HELP!!!

ALL THIGS BEING EQUAL I'D STILL LOOK AT THE FUEL. When I sold lawn equipment, We would tell customers either empty the tank and run the crb dry or use a fuel stabilizer if the equipment runs less than once per week. I've seen summer blend fuel (regular gas) gel and cloud up in less than three weeks in a closed container. In an open container (your fuel tank assist vented) I've seen again in a open glass container the ethanol pull in as much as 1/4 the volume of the fuel as water -
So this is like the third bike or pieces of bike, i've seen in the past 6 weeks on my typical route to and from work. All three have been early morning (dark). All have been on the bigger (6 lane) road when traffic is still sparse. No evidence of excessive speed or lane change or direction change. I think it a visibility thing. I have a headlight (LED BROWVIEW) Hiway lamps permanently on (AGAIN HI output LEDS) A full complement of bright green LEDS all over the big (48 on each side) As well as the two projectors at the back of the bike pointing down. AS well as a lot of chrome and stainless The RSV is not small neither am I, I've been told before after Blowing a horn to get attention that they just didn't see me!! DO we unconsciously edit out things like bikes pedestrians and other things that aren't cars when we drive? I'm beginning to rethink riding into my retirement, maybe now is the time! I almost convinced my self last spring when she stopped riding with me to give it up. I kept the bike and started to use it even more for daily transportation. Now I love to ride, but I love to hunt and fish and I haven't done those in almost 20 years mostly because of where I live, but still! Is it getting worse out there?
