clutch slave rebuild?
baylensman replied to suds's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
I did it on the 86 and the 96 overall i'd the first gen was a bit easier but neither is HARD just time consuming. Like others have said the upside end is easier to fix and easier to diagnose. and an empty master cylinder will feel "FINE" but may not be pumping enough fluid. -
what are you guys riding? I've had two RSV's and a RSTD 90% or my riding is in town commuting and I'm lucky to get 35MPG closer to 32MPG most of the time usuauly hit the reserves at around 125 to 135 miles then fill up on the way home so no idea how far reserve gets me. I never put more than 4.6 gallons in the bike ever!

so I got the valve cover gasket changed and rebuilt the clutch slave on my old bike. Well i tried to teach the boy child how to do it but i just had to get my hands greasy. LOL So during the process I see that the oil leaking into the head pockets has really caused one of the spark boots to deteriorate. Can the boots be replaced or are the once piece with the wire and coil assembly?

So on the son's 96 rstd. driving down the road today. speedometer acted erratic bike cut in and out a few times then stalled. he coasted off the road. smoke coming from under the seat. Poped the seat the positive terminal on the battery is melted, no the cable noanything else just the battery terminal! What could cause this and how do I fix cheap to get him on the road as the bike is his only transportation right now

I've seen on these forums someone offering a manifold for. Single carb I think. Add that to this http://www.ecotrons.com/products/400cc_to_800cc_engine_fuel_injection_kit/ and we might have something

Okay pretty strait forward. Gonna take the boy in hand, and work on his (my old) bike. Putting a new valve cover gasket on front cylinder, changing out brake pads (rear) and rebuilding the clutch slave inside the case. Did all of this before on either a gen 1 or gen 2 bike. Just trying to help my aging memory of any special things to watch out for when doing this job.

cold start up and fuel Smell
baylensman replied to muaymendez1's topic in Royal Star Venture Tech Talk ('99 - '13)
can you be more specific. what cuts off? the choke pops back in or the starter does engage anymore. or do you mean the bike starts then stalls right away? If the choke pops back in and has to be held, there's a little detent that can go sideways so you half to hold the choke a bit. If the starter disengage read thee forums there's a bunch of reasons from starter drive to solinoids and relays and bad switches. If you mean the bike fires then stalls and you smell fuel you got one or more weak cylinders, check plugs float levels and air tubes for leaks. Cold weather will accenuate any problems with a motor, something that doesn't affect your bike at 60' may kill it at 35'. My only other suggestion is move to where its doesn't get so dang cold 45" BRRRRRRR -
Did some checking and 14 mpg is about right for one of these trucks. to get it to 22MPG you need manual trans 3.73 gears or lower (3.55 3.40) tall hiway tires (no mudders or wide snowies) cold air kit (banks or KN) bigger exhaust ( at least a 3" down tube to start) There was some big changes in fuel mangement system between 93 and 94 the newer truck should be pulling 17 MPG around town and hitting 22 on the hwy Sorry but there it is a big difference in model year performance but its in the books

I am 56 years old and hold a semi responsible position at at large retailer, ( I can't be as serious as some but hey). I have two adult children, a demented Ex-wife and a very cute and cuddly new Girl friend. People ask my all the time why do I ride a motorcycle? Aren't you kinda old to still be playing around on that thing? And more in the same vein. I give all the standard answers. I like the fact that I get almost 40MPG in town. Its easier to park. I like the fact that with a flick of my wrist I can out run 99% of the problems on the road. I enjoy the fact that I can't answer my phone on the bike so I get a few minutes each day that I am free. I realized those are benefits or extras or perks but not the real reason. There is an unidentifiable feeling that overtakes me since my first bike way back in 1969, as I swing my leg over the bike and rest my hands on the oh so comfy grips. Tapping the starter and twisting the throttle as I begin to move, brings with it a combination of feelings, power peace and philosophical look at the world that I've never found any where else and I thank the stars above each and every time I ride .

Minneapolis Motorcyclist hits pothole is thrown to his death
baylensman replied to bill in mn's topic in Watering Hole
I hate to hear estimated speeds after the fact. I have a close friend who is a retired traffic investigator. He says police routinely over estimate speeds based on physical evidence. part is poor training part is they are told to round up whenever there is doubt. The distance a rider ended up after an accident on a bike is so variable its unbelievable. My cousin JC crashed at over 60mph and was less than 4 Ft from bike while Randy t-boned a car and did a superman at 20mph and ended up 30,ft away! -
Another interesting fact on the news about red light cams. Fatalities down but overall accidents are up! My idea is this solve the homeless and jobless problem. If you're out of work, go to the courthouse and register, get assigned a corner, get a digital camera. Stake out the intersection. At the end of the day email your photos to the police. You get 10% of every ticket generated. No more $10K cameras paid for with my money while a private contracter gets 40% off the top.

Its not a venture it just an Royal star. The caliper is old and needs to be rebuilt. the reason for a new one, is somewhere in the past one bolt was replaced and it seems to have been replaced by a us standard thread bolt. I was figuring instead of drilling and helicoil I might find a used one. Should be a single piston model.

Looking for a good used rear caliper for a 96 RS

Odometer question
baylensman replied to samklr650's topic in Royal Star Venture Tech Talk ('99 - '13)
Around 125 miles on my bike before I need to, hi the reserve. Most driving back and forth to work only 3.5 miles one way so its barely warm when I shut down. Can push it to 140 on a tank on the weekends if we do some cruisin
