  1. I think the 89 Lincolns mark7 and Continentals ran the 5.0 HO motors where as my 96 mark8 uses the 4.6 liter 4 cam Cobra motor (less the steel crank)
  2. OKAY HERE GOES! I did a lot of research on OCTANE and ETHANOL yesterday. By law ALL gasoline in the US contains ETHANOL even premium fuels. The exceptions are fuels labeled and sold as OFF ROAD USE only (farms, marinas with out vehicle fuel station and airports) Two states Missouri and Wisconsin I believe have specifically written laws that allow the sale of ETHANOL free gasoline but at a much higher price. Some fuel providers have a separate pump for Ethanol free gas but, the price per gallon includes a mandated FINE for usage. In Canada its even more convoluted Each province has its own laws and labeling requirements. Fuel there sold across borders must contain ethanol. With the loss of the Tetra-Ethly lead as a knock inhibitor most refineries have added ethanol since the mid 70's to premium blends to up the octane numbers long before the "fuel" crisis. Octane numbers are backwards, the lower the number the more likely the fuel air mixture is to explode under pressure? so 86-89 burns quicker and hotter than 91-94 octane.(straight gasoline without additives was sold as a cleaning solutions the mid 1800's and was responsible for many spontaneous fires, due to its extremely low ignition point) The use of premium FUEL ONLY is to slow down the burn on higher compression and performance engines, so that at lower RPMS the engines aren't as efficient but at the higher revs where thee motors live they make better power. Now use of Ethanol reduces the force per unit volume of the fuel (Octane is not a power rating neither is Cetane) that is why Alcohol powered cars have larger fuel lines and bigger fuel pumps! Research by an at the pump testing agency (you can find on line) shows that on average across Florida where I live regular gas contains on average 7% ethanol while premiums run around 5%. So premium does have less of the power robbing ethanol. In the case of my bike,as long as it does no harm to the engine, the difference in price per mile driven may show that regular is the better choice in a straight dollar world, however if I do get and extra 30-50 miles per tank now. the additional $1.00 per fill up offsets the hassle of times per month I fill up.
  3. Every bike i've ever owned, i've been told. run the cheapest gas you can DO NOT USE PREMIUM. Well that advice has served me well over the years. i buy regular or even economy at the few places that still sell it. I remember a discussion here about octane ratings. The consensus seemed to be be the same. low octane with the lowest ethanol as possible. Now my lincoln requires premium it says so right on the filler flap and the fuel gauge in the dash. Two weeks back I pulled up to the pump and filled the lincoln. The next afternoon I pulled up on the on the bike to the same pump and filled the bike with Premium, just like i did the lincoln. I realized my mistake when i looked at the toral on the pump! Well I expected the bike to start to bog out and carbon up in a few days, It hasn't so far. Also the fuel gauge shows me with just i bar over 1/2 a tank 110 mile in! Now I know the gauge can drop like a stone but i've never seen that sign a figure on a half tank. So i'm thinking the Premium is helping. I also found the file sticker and it recommends 91 octane not 89 like my other yamaha. So are there different "Build" on these bikes other than the CARB build for california? will Premium hurt it for just one tank? Does any one else run premium on a regular basis?
  4. What he said base is fixed but element rotates
  5. So the broview seems to be the lamp of choice? However in the video it shows that the bulb is rotatable, how do you know if its clocked correctly for you application?
  6. I told my daughter she talks way to fast for me, her reply is that I listen too slow!
  7. Watch Glimpse and other tracking apps. hey can really burn up battery time. I used to use WAZE because there's a lot of followers and it updates traffic in real time, but even when i logged out it ran in the background. GLYMPSE is okay i use it in afternoon traffic because she worries if i'm more than 5 minutes late LOL, but it to can drain battery. Verizon has an app preloaded (cost's to activate) that allows tracking of phones on the account, haven't used it, perhaps other carriers offer a similar option? I'm also going to check into the OK GOOGLE i like the idea of just pining every so often so it at least narrows the search grid so to speak. Now if some enterprising young phone stud came up with an APP that automatically sent a pin every 15 minutes or so......I might buy it.
  8. The Vision was my second choice when I was looking for a bike. The big draw back was the lack of 4 cylinders, and I grew up on Yamahas since i was 12 years old. Now the vision is gone. Tried a wing and a beamer, both felt like i was sitting on bike and driving I wasn't "riding" them. I tried my brother "ultra classic" nice bike but the price tag prevents that from serious consideration.
  9. I lost the wing nut that hold the seat on. i check under the bike, shook the bike in case it stuck. It must have fallen through a dimensional rift somewhere its gone. Got out the magnet check the corners the pile of soft dust everywhere. So off to "Home depot" gab another wing nut, put a little lacquer on the threads reattached the seat on, then on about my way. Two weeks later, I'm washing the bike with the garden hose, and i hear metal hit the concrete. THERE'S THE DANG SCREW!
  10. Had a similar event here in FL. A friend was in an accident, his fault. Damage was L/H outer rear bed panel, tire, wheel, and tailight around $1000 in damage but they "totaled" it. The first offer from the insurance CO was ludicrous $2400. Called BS on the adjuster and said if you can find a similar vehicle with in 500 miles i'll take the offer, he then proceed to highlight the upgrades ( chrome step bumper painted to match cap, lap top power ports etc etc.) Well they called back the next day with a much better offer, $4800 but wanted the truck immediately. Well unknown to them I'm in the auto business and in our area almost every "totaled" car goes through a local clearance yard. The yard then re auctions these vehicles to other salvers or to used car dealers, my friends truck already had offers for over what the insurance Co offered from two different used car dealers, they planned to "wash" the title and resell the truck for almost double what he was given it was on a dealer lot about 60 miles south of here 30 days later with a $9500 sign in the window. Florida now has "Rebuilt" and "salvage" titles, I bought an SUV for my girlfriend that way paid about $3k less than a similar "used" SUV at the dealer. The other reason for such a quick pay off and pick up is to remove an "At fault" vehicle removed from circulation quickly and either get it stripped or rebuilt, in case of litigation.
  11. The thing I find most frustrating about texting and driving is that the technology exists to stop it! I know most of you have heard about Poke'mon Go. well when you start this game it can sense how fast you're going and the little screen pop's up and says your driving don't play the game, of course the game has an override so that you can say you're a passenger but. An app that senses any motion over 5 mph should be placed on every teens phone! Make it not removable and not over ridable. If you're a passenger you can't text either! Also if you get caught by a cop with a phone in your hand and you are over 21 well court ordered app install! Just like breathalyzer for offenders. Several states have Cell phone laws but it is not a primary offense. meaning that the police can't pull you over just for cell phone use, they have to see other behavior or offenses.
  12. In the city... Herds of young women in yoga pants and t-shirts
  13. I am a big sci-fi fan. When the internet just starting getting hot 1994/95. I was gifted a set of paperback books. These were the Lensman Series by E.E.Smith. I since read and reread them 20 to 30 time the original space opera. Well anyhow my email and screen name started out as "lensman" "gray lensman" or "1stLensman" evidently others had the same affliction as I and revered Doc Smith and choose similar or the same names. Well evidently Ebay had an issue in 99 or so and I was forced to changed my screen name there so as I am residing in Tampa Bay a I added Baylensman to my Ebay handle and left everything else alone. My internet service provider (old dial up account) went belly up, so I had to create a new account with the new angle "Broad band" or cable modem crowd. So i used the Baylensman" handle there, and everyday else, since then I use it when ever possible.
  14. Me " why does divorce cost so much" Attorney "It's worth it!!!":amen: Friend" "why did you get divorced?" Me " have you met my EX?":yikes:
  15. I hate to admit that I omit the brain bucket occasionally. Usually on excessively warm mornings, i'll through it in the trunk. I'd say 98 trips out of a 100 its on my head.
  16. Look here http://www.laminarlip.com/royalstar.php plus a 16.5" tinted F4 windshield I'm 6 ft she's 5'7' and sits up behind me. with this on, we can talk and her hair doesn't knot. with out it she's gets air blown hair and cut in here eyes even with wrap arounds. Also I can ride slower in the rain with out getting wet. Its not for every body, but I like it
  17. I've seen it done. On the car show circuit, a lot of guys carried bikes to get around some of the venues were sprawling (Carlise was almost 14 miles of roads in the fair grounds) Comments about frame rails are well taken. The one i saw had a 2" x 4" box tube under the existing frame rails using u-bolts similar to the square type used on big rig rear axles. The flooring was peeled back and the sub floor was treated to some 1"x6" cross laid to the sub floor ( 45") . He had gotten a door from a box truck and used half of it so it swung out. Last I saw he was talking about a winch because it was a real BI$#@H to load. when I saw it he had been on the road for 3 or 4 seasons and never had any other issues. He said he never hauled with the tanks full. He even went so far as to take the fresh tank off and plumb for site side water. I don't know for sure about moving anything else around. Us old car guys were pretty handy with the improvised engineering, to save a few bucks!! Home made campers and roll back on old pickups. Even saw a few extra long vans with tag axles!!
  18. Getting old or turning into your parents. I found my self one day yelling at my son to "take a picture and close the fridge" as it passed my lips I thought Oh man I am my dad!
  19. Well my son bought a new to him cbr600 f4 (1999 model). When it comes to mechanical ability I'd swear he's adopted. Anyway he bought this bike used about 150 miles from knoxville. He test rode it, everything was fine, he got about half way home and it quit. Well he called a friend got the bike home. I Talked him through some basics as far as diagnosis. Long story short, bike starts and runs now, but will cut out after a mile or so. There are several cracked and missing vacuum lines, which he is slowly learning to fix, I think thats the main issue, perhaps some bad or old gas and some loose connectors too. If anyone in the area can spend a little time looking and listening in person and pointing him in the right direction it would be a great help. I'll do what I can via phone and Skype but nothing beats being at ground zero.
  20. Forget PSI and ratios. get a level check the floor at both locations I'll bet money that while both floors appear level, something is tricking your eye and the bike is leaning an inch or so more at the lower at one location. Lots of place where cars mysteriously roll up hill, with a good level and transit the find the the surrounding terrain fools the eye and the vehicle is actually going downhill.https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Spook_Hill when you park at the place where it doesn't leak. drive it up on some scrap 1" x 6" and then put the kick stand down and see if it leaks then. Just my 2 cents (inflation adjusted to $.0007)
  21. WELL THE PICTURED ITEM GOT MY MOTOR RUNNING! I just might need to by a back up and keep it in the work shed!
  22. So lots of thinks happened together, which may lead to letting the bike go. I'm healthy and all that the issues are more complex. Her health community regulations getting more restrictive. Thinking of letting go of my hotrod Lincoln and the bike, and picking up a newish convertible for basic transport beach cruising. Now she loves to ride or used to, until her eyesight had issues, which the doc is correcting later this month maybe. then a 3 month period of steadily clearing vision. SO I don't have to make up my mind today. If her peripheral vision comes back it won't seem to her like cars are coming out of nowhere, and she may be able to relax a bit and enjoy it again. right now i'm driving the bike back and forth to work so its getting a whopping 12 miles a day of use, 3 or 4 times a week. The question or dilemma is would selling now versus later when the weather turns warmer make a difference in sale price, making it advantageous to sell now? What are the 3 or 4 biggest issues that I can address myself that would turn off or impress a prospective buyer on our bikes?
  23. Had the crank sensor problem myself. Seems the little bolt loosened every so slightly then a peice of sticky paper from the new radiator hose rode the belt around and stuck to the sensor and lifted it up every so slightly so i had intermittent contact. It appears that the"'ecm" only uses the sensor for start up! However it check it every so many cycles so you get a weird error code if the sensor is in its up position ( away from the pulley). The "ecm" check fuel pump relay, crank sensor and one other if any of the three is out it wont start, and it disables the other two so if the crank sensors shows bad at start up the fuel pump relay is locked out so your testing can show fuel problems however when you hit the brakes to park the sensor can drop back down and then it will restart after sitting if you do a coast in it may not "fall" down until the next time you slam the hood. It took three back yard mechanics with sensors and code boxes over a month to find it
  24. Okay so been thru several cords now hooking the iPod to the bike. The issue seems to be the AUX port itself. I haven't torn into it yet. Has any one tinkered? i was wondering if i could leave the deck in place and "unscrew" the bezel, or is there a nut on the back. The std 1/8 phone/stereo plug is pretty simple there is usually two partial collars, and a third "finger" that are made of springy brass or plated steel. the 1/8 pin goes in and each level of the pin makes contact with one of the three. sometimes (most times) the collars loosen a bit so you end up with intermittent contact. So i want to pull it to and tweak it so it can go another 10 years or at least to another owner..(whole other story)
  25. I don't know if you have and "cloud" type storage attached to your phone or computer. You have to double check the settings on both. Had and issue where i would download a photo from "Myfiles" to my phone to forward to someone. my phone would copy this once when i dowloaded then once in the sent folder ( at this point 1 copy in "Myfile" 2 copies on phone) my phone is set to auto back up to several sources. 2 copies of the photo go to my cloud storage "myfile" and also to my google and samsung phone back ups. ( now 3 copies in "Myfile") If i needed the same photo again for a different installer and forgot it was already on my phone or I was to lazy to search. i download again then send (now 4 copies on my phone and after back ups 5 copies in 'Myfile" and 2 more to each google and samsung. I'd get tired of memory issues go back into my phone and clean out all my duplicates and some originals. well my phone would do its outback up thing and sometime in the next 24 hours i'd get a message about file transfer pending and I just hit okay now all 5 photos of the same shower come back to my phone in the Photo directory not spread out in the sent directly and upload directories. It was a cycle until i changed the settings on my phone and computer to "not back up from other sources" that way i had one copy on my phone until i told it to save and one copy on my "myfile" account
