My hats off to you Carl, I applaud a man who stands up for what’s reasonable and fair. In my opinion they should be talking to people like you for solutions, people who have years and experience that would add credibility, sensibility and realism (words not found in political dictionaries) towards solutions of this nature. But then again that would take common sense and here in lays the dilemma.

Sounds like it heated up as a result of a bad connection. You said its come loose on you before so perhaps you weren’t getting a proper connection. I run the same bulb and haven’t had a problem.

Very interesting, I do see the similarities. Did you order the ‘sample kit’ or product? (dah, sample kit, that’s what you said... it's ok i'm awake now) It might be a good idea to test the product on an old tire or bicycle tire first. Also, I used a small piece of paper towel as an applicator, it allowed me more control of the product... I didn’t want to get any on the threads. Keep in mind it will leave a bit of a sheen (which I think looks pretty good). Let me know how it works out for you! I’m just about to change my back tire and the white wall is still looking great… it really helps with the maintenance.

Seafoamed Plugs
dragerman replied to MasterGuns's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
Some plugs may be more tolerant then others but I’m sure if you follow the Sea-Foam product instructions it should be ok. Personally I think that in general fuel additives are used excessively and without much benefit. I agree that one full can of Sea-Foam seems a little much for one tank of fuel, more is not necessarily better. If the product is going to work it should do so when used according to the manufactures instructions. Too often we look for a quick fix (understandably so) and reach for a simple solution. I believe these products have a purpose but I tend to be a little cautious as to ‘how much’ and ‘how often’ I put anything in my tank. In Canada a 473ml can of Sea-Foam can cost about $12.00, it takes about 9 ½ cans to make up one CDN gallon for a total cost of $114.00. That’s the equivalent of 26 gallons of fuel! I don’t know about you but I can drive a long way on that.- 13 replies

Yes, it was an amazing experience especially to ‘bee’ so close... believe me though, it wasn’t by choice. At one point I had more the a few landing and walking on me, at first I danced like no one has ever seen but then I realized they didn’t seem bothered by me. I thought of the bee keepers and as much as I didn’t like it I didn’t panic and calmly brushed them off. I was more concerned with one crawling down my shirt... then on top of the dance you’d of seen me strip!

I was down at the dock taking some measurements at the bottom of the steps when I heard a humming noise that got louder and louder. I thought it was an approaching aircraft as there has been a fair bit of air traffic as a result of an air-show over the weekend. It was getting rather loud and must have been fairly close because I could feel a vibration in the air... it was then that I looked up and realized I was amidst a swarm of bees! The bees made a cloud that was at least 25ft in diameter and were blocking my exit from the dock. After about twenty minutes the swarm was starting to thin as they were collecting in an adjacent tree, they didn’t seem too interested in me so I cautiously made my way past them and out in the clear. What a relief! Buzzing insects make me nervous and can be quite startling for me (especially when I’m riding along and catch one in the helmet... don’t ask me how I know!). I’ve never witnessed anything like this before so it was quite an experience. Here are some photos as they started collecting in the tree…

That’s awesome Bob... I’m very happy for both of you! I guess deep down inside every 1st Gen’er there’s a 2nd Gen’er just waiting to break loose!

Cleaning the white walls is not the problem... it's having them stay clean for longer without creating a safety issue or harming the rubber.

Hey sleepy, you were asking about the product so here you go... Over the last few months I’ve been experimenting with a product and I find it helps tremendously to keep the white walls clean and looking white. It provides a coating and helps seal the rubber to prevent brake and road dust from embedding in the rubber. The product is “Inflatable Boat Protectant” and it’s made by Strico Products Limited. I’ve been using this product for over ten years on my Zodiac and its great stuff. It’s designed to protect the boat material from UV rays and subsequently the coating also makes the material much easer to clean. I thought of using this product on the tires one day after having worked so hard to clean them up. I did want time to test the product before I mentioned it on the forum, it’s been almost three months and 6000 miles and thus far I’m more then satisfied with the results. *Please note this is ‘not’ a cleaner. The product is designed for PVC and Hypalon and is also suitable for Vinyl and rubber. It’s a milky liquid that you apply with a ‘small’ (about 1 sq. inch) sponge or piece of paper towel. Although this product has a dry finish and does not wash off with water *Do not put any product on the part of the tire that comes in contact with the road. I put two coats on in the spring to test the product and another two coats when I washed the bike a month later and haven’t put any since. Just wipe it on and let it dry about 10 minutes between coats, two coats should do (more is not necessarily better). I won’t have to put any more on for a while now as it seems to hold up very well, even after washing. It will dry with a bit of a sheen (which I think looks good) but more importantly it makes cleanup MUCH easer and you won’t have to scrub so hard or as often to get the ww’s clean. I wipe mine with a little Vim and I’m done. It helps keep the white white and the black black, I also use it on some of the vinyl. Use what you want to clean up the tires there are a lot of products that work just fine. Just make sure that when you put this stuff on that the tire is clean and dry. You won’t have to be as aggressive with the cleaning after applying the Strico. Now for the bad news, this bottle has lasted me for a while, I’m not sure where you can get it or if it’s still even available. I’ll go back to where I got this bottle and see what I can find out, in the meantime if anyone else happens to know where it can be found please lets us know.

I bought a refurbished XM antenna from Radio World and so long as you’re happy with the price you should be in good hands. I’ve also subscribed to XM radio but keep in mind that it’s geared for the US... they don’t provide Canadian weather or traffic. All considered it’s an expensive way to listen to music. I did get a bit of a break from XM when I complained that they wanted to charge me full price but couldn’t provide me full service... that’s when they offered me a seasonal rate. Six months for $65 and the other six months for free. I was also a little disappointed that they removed the Led Zeppelin and AC/DC channels.

Lower left fairing needed
dragerman replied to MasterGuns's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
jasonm is right, it can be fixed. Here’s the product I use http://www.plastex.ca/, you can do things with this product that can’t be done with others. One of the members on this site dumped his bike and bust the lower faring, not only was it broke in many pieces but pieces were also missing. We had a long trip planned and had to get the air intake covered so I suggested he bring it over and let’s try to repair it with the plastex (I had bought a kit to have after I seen a demo). Long story short, it’s still on the bike today and unless you got down on your knees and looked real close you’d never know it was previously damaged. That was a year ago and he’s put many miles since. -
99 RSV Gas Mileage
dragerman replied to Yamastretch's topic in Royal Star Venture Tech Talk ('99 - '13)
I’ve been monitoring my gas consumption for a while now and use the calculator to help http://www.rbcroyalbank.com/RBC:RCd0Jo71A8YAAFW4V7I/cgi-bin/carloan/gas.pl . The way I use it is I start with a full tank, ride, then when I need fuel again I fill it as close to what it was when I started and write the mileage on the receipt. When I get home I pull out the receipt and enter the ‘distance traveled’ and ‘amount of gas required’ on the calculator and it tells me my rate of consumption. The speedometer on these second gen ventures are pathetic in terms of accuracy, and seem to be out by approximately 7%. This will affect your fuel calculations if you don’t have other means to accurately determine your distance traveled. I use a GPS, have punched out the fill neck on my tank and have taken many readings starting from a ‘full’ tank. The bike runs great and the plugs and tailpipe show the bike is burning clean. I don’t smell fuel from the exhaust, am running with K&N filters, iridium plugs, burn regular fuel (87 octane) and have synced the carbs. All my calculations are done riding 1-up however I’ve made no concessions for speed, terrain, temperature, head wind or weather. What I’ve found is that my mileage will very from 38 to 48 miles per imperial gallon (32 to 40 miles per US gallon). I’m sure I could bring those numbers up if I tried but that would mean installing a heavier throttle spring! ... These are accurate readings for my bike so as you can see the mileage can vary greatly. I’m satisfied that the bike is running well. -
We were so poor growing up that mom use to cut the bottoms out of our pockets so we’d have something to play with!!! So-o-o-o, that’s got me thinking... cut the pockets out of your pants then catch some wind up your legs (flow-through ventilation). I’m not sure if it really works but think of all the fun you could have!! :rotfl::rotfl:

... I agree! Bob I must also say that I admire your patients and sense of commitment... it’s certainly a labor of love. You’ll have all that much more to feel proud of on your next ride!

Dropped my Helmet, need reccomendations on replacement
dragerman replied to Sunman's topic in Watering Hole
The Reevu seems like an awesome helmet but if you’re riding two-up can the one in the back see what’s going on in the front! -
Amen to that! It seems there are so many willing to take who have not yet learned how to recognize genuine need or how to give. That’s a ‘pet peeve’ of mine and I could go on but I won’t... you’ve summed it up quite nicely by way of actions and I take my hat off to you!

My priority for accessorizing the bike has been towards safety and comfort and this mod certainly fits the bill. Not only does it afford a little extra safety in terms of extra rear lighting but it also adds to my comfort knowing it’s there... never the less, ride safe and watch your back! Thanks for your help too Sonny, it was team work!
