I come from the old school of biking... fall down, get up and try it again. Problem is that I’m not as young as I use to be and there is much more knowledge and insight now. There is also a difference to dirt bike riding and riding the open road on a cruiser. Having said that, I read the book about two years ago and would highly recommend it! It’s a good book for anyone who currently rides or is thinking about starting. There is no such thing as too much information when it comes to motorcycle safety. That’s what me’s thinks!

I chopped 4 1/2 inches off my windshield for that very reason. Now I can see the road from over the windshield about 25 ft in front of the bike. Got caught in some very heavy fog twice this week and each time was late at night. The water particles that collected on both sides of the shield did not allow me to see through and I keep it well polished with Plexus. if not for being able to just see over the top I wouldn't have been able to see at all. Coatings like Plexus helps and I won’t be caught without it, every little bit helps. I even put it on the outside of my glasses and face shield. However as you slow down I find it becomes less effective. With darkness, water particles (usually full of road dirt) collecting on the shield (both sides), reflections, limited visibility, road spray from other vehicles, compromised traction and all the other hazards (did I mention CRAZY drivers) ... If I have to be out I want to see where I’m going! I don’t like looking through a shield in anything other then daylight and sunshine.

I always feel much safer in full gear but admittedly don’t always wear it. Many accidents occur at intersections so it’s important to know the rules of the road and to be paying attention. As you know that’s not always going to be enough and from time to time there is always someone who is not paying attention and will come flying through. I don’t know how many times I’ve been sitting at a red light, two bike side by side. The light turns green, one bike proceeds, then the other but the car behind advances when the first bike lets off the break almost hitting the other. What people often forget is that only one vehicle is allowed in an intersection at a time and if a vehicle is in an intersection when the light changes they have the right of way to clear the intersection. It seems that people are in such a rush, so impatient and often distracted. This is an expense to us all in more ways then one. Thanks for your write-up it was well done and a good reminder for us all. As our membership numbers increase so to will stories like this. I’m glad to hear you faired well and wish you a full and quick recovery... you are that much wiser now and hopefully so to are we all! Cheers to that!

Magnetic Oil Drain Plug
dragerman replied to Hulk's topic in Royal Star Venture Tech Talk ('99 - '13)
I found these great little magnets at Princess Auto. They’re about ½” round, 3/8” thick and flat on two sides. They are remarkably strong and inexpensive with a polished finish. I stick one on the outside end of the oil drain plug for the diff and engine. I also put a couple on the outside of the oil filter itself (don't forget to take them off before you throw the filter out!). No one would know they’re there and like it has already been said... “it doesn’t hurt” -
I bought a 2006 Venture from Mikes Famous Harley Davidson down in Delaware and I live in Canada. I shoot over the boarder for my warrantee work and have no problems getting it done. Dealers up here have their noses out of joint and don’t want to warrantee US bikes but that’s too bad for them. They say they can’t do it but if you are from the States and traveling in Canada and need work done they can do it. What happens is that they get reimbursed by Yamaha US instead of Yamaha Canada. Not only do I get the work done in the States but I also get a good feed of Buffalo wings! Canadian dealers complain about loosing business but do nothing to be competitive. The amount of money that I saved on buying over the boarder is more then what their warrantee is worth. I was prepared to do without the warrantee but am able to get it anyways. The same is true for parts! For example a Canadian dealer quoted me on a set of WWW Dunlop 404’s. He wanted $229.00 plus %15 tax = $264.00. Then he wanted to charge me 1 hour labor @ $85.00/hr plus tax = $97.00 for a total of $361.00 ... and that’s just for ONE tire! ... I bought TWO tires down in the states delivered to a US address. I pulled the wheels and had the tires installed and balanced for a grand total of $245.00 that’s for TWO tires! Now I’ve heard of guys getting a set of tires installed and balanced for as little as $500 Canadian and considered that a good deal. Well by my math it’s still too much. Warrantee or not, shop around!

Money order is in the mail! Can't wait to get mine Already have the mudflaps on... guess I'll soon have to post some new pictures.

Good write-up Seaking, I’m glad you mentioned about the “tires”. Cold tires can be particular problem when first starting out if the bike has been sitting in the cold. The only other thing I’d like to add that often gets over looked is that it’s important to eat ‘properly’ before you go out in the cold. Your body needs fuel to keep warm! The bottom line is that if you do get cold ‘manage it’ don’t insist on riding. Make frequent stops, warm your gloves in a washroom hand dryer, use hot packs, get a room, whatever... know your limitations, act accordingly and be safe.

Now here’s a handsome looking bike, it belongs to GaryN. The picture was taken at Carl’s meet and great. I think they look great with the black cherry and now have them on mine.

Very good, I got a pretty good chuckle from the second last one.

Question for all the electronic Gurus
dragerman replied to dragerman's topic in Poor Man Tips and Fixes
See, that's what I love about this site... all the answers are right here! Thats really great, I'll check with Raido Shack (again) and if I have no luck with them I'll make my own. Thanx! -
I’d like to make a headphone adapter that will allow me to plug a 1/8 stereo into the factory headset plug on a 2nd Gen for music listening. I’ve got a noise reduction headset that I’d like to install in my helmet and plug directly into the bike. My thoughts are that if I get a male adapter and the 2nd Gen and the wiring diagram for the headset plug that I could make an adapter to a 1/8 female stereo plug. This (I hope) would allow me to plug in the noise reduction headset. Can it be done and do you think it will work??? Secondly, does anyone have the wiring or schematic diagram for the headset plug that shows what each pin is for?? Charlie

K & N, do they help?
dragerman replied to Kross Kountry's topic in Royal Star Venture Tech Talk ('99 - '13)
I drive a 1995 Chev Suburban with a 6.5 turbo Diesel. I installed a K&N air filter on it and now 13 years and 341,000 kilometers later it is still going strong. Not sure how much I’ve saved in paper filters but one thing for sure is that it’s paid for itself many times over. That truck has hauled ass big time and lord knows I don’t spare none (and I’ve been on some dusty roads!). Never once have I ever had any concerns for the filter aside from knowing it’s time for a cleaning. The other thing is that when I decide to clean it I don’t have to run around looking for one to buy. It’s more about economic sense then performance but if a little comes my way ‘more power to me’ ... Hey! I just made a funny! My K&N’s will be going in the bike next week. -
Decided not to buy 2007 venture
dragerman replied to Bobcatpat's topic in Royal Star Venture Tech Talk ('99 - '13)
Going back to the original question “any suggestions”... I’ve got one... Anyone lending money wants securities for their financial considerations and will often hold a lean / collateral when doing so. They also assess the risk and like when the purchaser has an invested interest (because it reduces risk). Having said that a new bike could be worth anywhere up to around $17,000 (give or take). The purchase price of the used bike (supposedly like new with only 500 +/- miles) is only $11,000. That’s a difference of $6,000. Suppose the vendor gave you a receipt for $14,000 stating that he received $3,000 non-refundable down payment, balance to be paid in full by ‘whenever’. It would now appear that not only are you saving $3,000 off the price of a new bike but that you have also invested a $3,000 down payment. All you need is $11,000 to close the deal. Say what you want but the reality is that the bike is arguably worth that much anyways. Just because you got a good deal it doesn’t mean the bike is worth less. The bottom line is that you must be able to afford not only the $11,000 but everything else that goes with it like insurance and your travel to go get the bike etc. Getting the money is easy, paying it off is the task. Good luck with what ever you decide. -
... that's what me thinks.

It’s too big for a souvenir but kinda gives a whole new meaning to ‘rock and roll’! Glad no one got in the way of that.
