For all the problems I've had with the moneypit, I can finally say persistance does pay. Left Oak Ridge at about 7am friday morning, with the thought that this trip will make or break her. My brother and I headed for hinesville Ga to see my son. He was on my goldwing, and I on the moneypit. The first thing we hit was the dragon, as he had never been across it before. We stayed on us129 all the way to athens Ga. from there ran ga15 down to wrightsville, then ga57 to glennville, then ga 196 to hinesville. the only bad part of the whole ride was low flying clouds on the dragon made the road wet, and no chance for pics. Remember they were racin in atlanta this weekend, so didn't want to get near there. Came back thru atlanta yesterday as he had to work this morning. 450 miles at 80 plus. Neither old bike missed a beat, I wasnt worried about the wing, but was a little apprehensive about the vr. Anyhow, 954 miles over the weekend, and both performed really well. I want to thank all the guys on this site for their advice. without you, this was never possible. And by the way, I made this trip after having my appendix out 2 weeks ago.:thumbsup2::thumbsup2:

Ya know, Comments like this are what make me think that if I ever get rid of the '89, that I will be pointed towards a Honda. The local stealer for example- when you walk in the door-you MUST go through the showroom to get to service or parts. You have 4 or 5 salespeople attack you on your way to the back, then when you get there you have to stand in a 4 or 5 people line to get waited on. I hope the people on this site know how much their knowledge and advice are appreciated. While I may never know it all, you folks have got me to the point that I'm not afraid to tackle any problem that may arise with the moneypit.

Welcome to the family!! I've got an 89vr and run Avons on it. They seem to grip real well and wear pretty good. As for seafoam- It does a good job cleaning carbs and such- just dump it in the gas tank. Do not however use it in an old goldwing. You can find it in most autoparts stores as well as wally-world. My 89 was all together when I got it. Looked pretty good, but not well cared for. These folks have helped me bring it back from the graveside. You're gonna be amazed- Just ask and wait. I don't think that you could ask a technical question that nobody can answer.

Seafoam works great in the moneypit. When I put it in the wing the bike runs fine but you can shut the thing off and when you turn on the key after the bike sits (it doesn't matter how long- a minute or 3 days) the thing backfires like a 12 gage shotgun. That's just the key- haven't even hit the starter. That's the only time the thing ever does it, so I don't use it in the old girl.

Hey mama, what time are you guys on the chat?

It's cool here, 70's and 40's but beautiful out. However, I had my appendix out yesterday, so can't ride anyhow. I think I would rather have rain.

That's another job on the moneypit done. Between the advice and freebirds writeup on forkseals in the tech library, Oh and a trip to home depot and sears, while I surely didn't get it done in an hour, I now know how to change the seals in the forks on a vr. Tomorrow is valve cover gaskets. Anybody got any suggestions? Trying to get the bike ready for a trip to south Ga the end of the month. I had been thinking about selling this thing this winter, but at this point, I think a coat of paint and a sattelite radio, and I might just keep her. Can't swing it this time, but I think next go round I might try to get in on the deal for the MAC mufflers.

Looks to me like you not only got wet, but you got the Rodney Dangerfield no respect reward as well.

Ok, I found the idea for a tool to hold the damper rod in the forks . Simple enough, makes me wonder why I didnt think of it. Anyhow, can anybody tell me if a 15/16" bolthead will fit the damper rod on my 89VR? If not what size is it? Black Owl said he thinks it is a 17mm, but here in east Tn, the boys at home depot don't speak in mm. Just the same Black Owl, thanks for the input.

As usual, the moneypit is giving me grief again. This time, I'm trying to change the seals in the front forks. Got the wheel, fender and all off. I'm down to where I'm trying to break loose the 10mm allen on the bottom of the forks. The bolt just spins. Muffinman said that a couple of the guys from WV have made a tool that they use to replace what yamaha calls their "t handle for tightening and loosening the front fork holding bolts." When I looked in the shop manual, this thing looks like a really long 3/8 drive extension. If so, I can probably put one together. The next question is what size socket goes on the end, and do I need to worry about the outside diameter fitting down inside the tubes? Waiting on a little feedback here as at the moment I'm at a standstill.

1st gen rotors?
6pak replied to PEIslander's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
83 to 85 are interchangeable, as are 86 to 93. yamaha part#s are 1984 right front and rear 26H-25831-01-00 left front 26H2583101-00 1987 right front 1NL25831-00-00 left front 1NL25831-10-00 rear 1NL25830-52-00 The two will not fit each other. different part#s, and look different in the yamaha parts fiche. try ebc. i bought a new rotor for my 89, $162 plus shipping. I think freebird had one from an 83 a while back, depending on which one you need. If he cant help ya I'm sure somebody here can. -
what do you want 2 know? I drove for 15 years and was a cdl instructor b4 the dot sidelined me

Glad to here they're both gonna be alright. Shouldn't be a problem with his leave. CO should just extend for whatever time he needs. What I remember about crashing the wing, is that it happened so quick. before you know it, your in the ditch. And you hurt. I had 3 cracked ribs, broken collarbone, and 15 stitches in the head. What I remember most is that the roadrash hurt more than everything else together. Stung every time I moved. Is the bike repairable? looks like an older model honda.

How long should the dealer need?
6pak replied to ventureblue's topic in Royal Star Venture Tech Talk ('99 - '13)
:mo money:And I thought I had it bad having to wait for a week on parts that the stealer probably has in stock for the 2nd gens. I don't know if I could handle having the bike in the shop during riding season AND a payment book! -
:soapbox:Well, I knew it would happen sooner or later, especially the way this driveway is (thats my story and I'm stickin to it). You can see from the pics why I left the thing lay until I got home from work. I dropped it on the way to work last night. Said the ---- with it and got in the car. With where it was laying there was no way that the "walk it up" pick up theory was gonna work. It took my brother and I on the bike, and Nancy shoving a chock block behind the back tire, as the hill is steep enough that the thing will roll even in gear. Minor cosmetic damage. The thing layed there all night, cranked right up, and didn't even complain. The only thing I can think of is that 1-I didn't warm it up enough and 2-the hill was pretty slick from the rain and 3- Hey, I know know that the emergency kill works when the thing goes down.

Moneypit clutch-Thanks Y'all!!!
6pak replied to 6pak's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
:mo money:OK, so ya got me- fair is fair. The winners are Squeeze and Mike. Thanks again, all. I didnt even catch that- my bad, Squeeze. -
I would just like to say thank you to everybody that gave advice and suggestions concerning the clutch on the moneypit. And the winner is.....MBrood! After reading everyone else's advice-he raised an interesting point. Knowing that I had just put a kit in the master cylinder, including the rod that works the thing, he started talking about aftermarket cylinders and handles. That got me to thinking- I have a black brake handle, but the clutch handle is polished metal, and when I bought the bike there was a broken black handle in the trunk. He said that if I had put in an OEM pushrod between the handle and cylinder-that the rod may be too long- filed off 1/8" from the end that goes into the handle, and no more slip. It seems that you always have to have a little handle free play to ensure no pressure in order for the return to be free. After filing down the rod, I've logged about 700 miles on the bike, 200 yesterday at 90+ temps. To quote Forrest Gump "that's good, one less thing". Thanks again guys.

Noise from right rear
6pak replied to Dano's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
My bike does the same thing, except the noise is at any speed. Changed the rotor and pads a couple months ago. Couldn't stop the noise- looked at the rotor and seemed to have an awful lot of side to side movement for a new rotor. MAW sent me a new one. Put that one on , same thing. They sent me another, figuring may have been a bad shipment. I haven't put the new one on yet. Now I see that there is some kind of adhesive that I should have put on the back side of the pads? Correct me if I'm wrong, but wouldn't that take the slack out of the pads and make them ride tighter, thus cutting back on the noise I get from them and the rotor making contact when the brakes aren't applied? I understand that some noise is to be expected from a floating rotor, but it would be nice to quiet it down some. -
Clutch-here we go again
6pak replied to 6pak's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
You all called it-the return hole was plugged again. Will try to bleed the system clean. If it works-good, but at this point am planning on changing lines this winter. Unless somebody knows of a way to flush all the crap out of those 18 year old lines? -

6pak replied to 6pak's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
:fingers crossed:Here we go, will check the above and get back 2 y'all. If the return hole is plugged, I may have to change the line. Possibly new fluid being vacuumed through the old line broke something loose inside. Will keep ya posted. had the bike since April and haven't logged a thousand miles-the wing on the other hand---It's seen a lot of the road this season. -

Yamalube 15-40. As I have now had time to cool down a bit I'm wondering, could I have missed an air bubble, and would that cause this, clutch handle is stout. Are you at RB? Is the rok fab still in ludwigsburg? -
Well, it lasted a week- Went for about a 20 mile ride today- had to stop about 5 miles from the house and let the bike cool for an hour. The warmer the thing got, the more it slipped- Didnt matter what gear. It got so bad that just before I got off the road I nearly got run over pulling away at a green light. To refresh y'all- It's got new plates, boss, slave, rebuilt master and barnett kit. Anybody got any ideas? Or does anybody wanna buy an 89VR?- I've had about enough.
