So you were right kind of, you were running out of gas compared to the throttle plate position. If you have experience with say Holly’s or slide carbs you have just experienced Constant Velocity and its venturi process. The CV needs a constant velocity and the tuned balance that the air box provides. So because you in effect unbalanced the air stream pressure, the venturi was incapable of opening the mains. This is why I was asking if you could feel vacuum at the diaphragm/ which is a vacuum actuated piston that pulls the main tapered needle up the main jet. All is well that ends well;)

  4. Yep it is the top of the pinion gear. That nut hold the pinion to the coupling gear keeping both in place.

  6. here, you likely have a manual but so w are on the same page start at 6-11 http://www.werder.ee/Manual/XVZ1300.pdf Rule each one out starting with the position sensor
  7. You could check pump volume. When you say it runs well in 1st and second, it rpm and throttle position that matters right. Remember mine is a 91, and I'm not sure what yours is, I checked your profile? Are you running stock setup?

  9. The floats I set while I have the carbs open! Before I set them (regardless of what carb I am working on) I make sure that the floats will not bind in any position! Then I set for the recommended float height. If you have the carbs off again? Do this: place your hand over the intake and spin the engine no more then 5 turns, repeat on all four intakes. Does the vacuum draw hard and hold your hand firm? this will hint at the "tightness" of the low pressure/vacuum. The above is just my way, you may not be comfortable doing this. What about the slides? clean? are the ports on the casings developing vacuum, check with your thumb while cranking.. There's a small o-ring on one of the corners when the slide caps are off you should see easly..
  10. Refer to post 19 Refer to page 6-32 3: o-ring 4 28 ounces of oil in total or measure down. The closer you get the rebuild to standard specs then the liter the oil you can choose, minimum is 10W Regarding Eand units, they are check by applying voltage. They should buzz with either brake is apppied. Roll the inner tubes on a flat surface checking for a smooth roll. If not replace or bring to a hydraulic service shop for straightening. Poor the contents of the outer forks into a clean container, then stain looking for bits of metal or rubber. You will likely find the crash issues lying in the bottom of the outer tubes. Regarding springs, once you get this far you are likely best served by replacing them. Note: if you see excessive ware on the inner bore of the outer tubes, look into replacing them.

  13. Fuel filter Air filter ( the whole air box needs proper integrity) Fuel pump pressure I always set the floats while open. Also submerge them looking for bubbles. Now I have found on the "gen 1.5" that the floats can jamb, so I check this before final set of the floats by being a little aggressive with them through the expected travel. The ears that the bar travels through ware a bit or the bar does? Once I found that the float body swelled a bit, not sure what causes it? However I will note that one of the 2 bikes we ran last year had seen a lot of pure seafoam sitting in in the bowls, someones effort to avoid pulling the carbs.
  14. Good morning Doug, I did try to catch up a little last night and thought it best to wait till morning. I am a project guy, I receive input many times during the course of a working day Often find it helps to simplify information while keeping in mind expressed concerns. The very big problem for me is spelling out what comes so easy to me when expresses verbally! The anti dive aren't difficult to check, in my opinion should not be bypassed, should be maintained. Now I'm going to explain what your mind and reflex all ready know. When you run quickly and want to or need to stop suddenly; do you lean forward or instinctively ignite the kinetic springs taking a reverse lean? That is an electric impulse sent through the nervous system, same exact thing for the anti dive units! They slow the front compression which in turn helps the front tire maintain "form" and very importantly maintain the rear tire patch grip by slowing the forward motion of CG. This is the very reason for the "designed" interlock braking system on this beast of a machine. Next the supplement, I don't think I've read it? I use the hard copy and use it for order of... and design tolerances. I am lucky enough to be able to see improvement potential based 1 on experience, and 2 as a challenge; everything can be improved and is why I enjoy old bikes and cars! So where are we at the moment with the forks? What can I do for you to help you get started? I noticed in a post that Freebird recommends a different brand spring for the gen 2. So begs the question, has he been bribed by another brand, could be? Just look at all the advertisements we have to put up with on this forum;) Or is the recommendation based on experiment, fine tuning and shared experience? Hmmm Everything wares out. Feet flat on the ground, how tall are you? My feet are flat to the ground on mine and that is what I want, she's heavy. How many mile on this bike?

  16. I can see how some may resist; but the 1st pic is simply stunning! I assume you don't use this ride for touring, rather shortish weekend rides. I would not let my best, favorite girlfriend, talk me out of the side bags! Nice job!   17. 2 things because you are stuck and yes its late in the day for an answer... So last fall I had this happen on one of the bikes (but I always tour with tools) Use what ever a quarter say to remove the drain plug, take a coffee stir and gently wiggle it up touching the float. She's likely jammed side to bar! Next best is to remove the air filter, cup your hand over the over the carb while turning the engine over.. Then lift and repeat while continuing to spin the engine! You are oscillating the bowl pressure! You aren't far off cowpuc that can happen at the carb vent, worsens with high temps....! For future disconect the fuel inlet from tank above pump, mix a 50/50 of seafoam and gas run engine, when you suspect dirt in carbs.. Not this time Funny now, I just checked the date,oh borther
  18. High probability you have a sticky main? Prove it by checking temperature on all 4 at the exhausts. If they are close to equal within 4 minutes of run time its the main. If not pilot or plug would be a good start. Yep they run pretty good on 3.
  19. A question for gen 2 : Do you not need to use liquid gasket at the swing and the final drive?
  20. I guess on my 91 I was just lucky, I had to make a minor repair to the board and I think prairie... a remember helped me sort through it a while ago. The 86 was really rough condition!
  21. Well it was an 86? and nothing worked, the fellow brought me a ebay unit, and that was a mess so I had to mix and match and combine two speedoes to make one working unit... Talk about patients I'll find a pic and upload..
  22. I understand Doug. I am going to try to explain in a basic format the complex yet simplicity of forks. The springs are less than 1/2 the value. Simply put they provide the brute forces. There is a lot of gyro force that is included in the design of the forks. So another important item is oscillation. In reality these are the most important designs concerns. So keeping it basic- on mine I had a problem with high speed wobble, not a very technical term; however for those of us unfortunates that know what this experience is, quite spooky! Breaking it down wasn't hard I built frequency and what ever tipped it into wobble. ( its a high speed thing) Without going into too much detail the forward height must be balanced. Thee spring has to keep the extension or form, so it too is tuned via progression. Progression can be long or short and anything in between. So again we expect the spring to absorb energy, then we expect the spring to maintain form. This is a part of spring design and the other most important is heat treating!!! The complexity is really in torsion/twist and dampening. When you crash, the length of travel exceeds expectation, you have in effect applied to much force or possibly exceeded duty cycles! What really happens is the dampening failed the spring "usually" that is assuming the spring is still within design spec, or has not yet exceeded duty cycle So again (yah I know I say- so- a lot) we ride sport machines not family vans! The forks are very important and worth every penny to maintain! There is zero reasoning for power when we as pilot can completely dominate, ok control- it! keeping it simple take a rather large rubber band, between to extended fingers stretching the band with elbows bent out- the band is the spring the supraspinatus, infraspinatus, subscapularis, and teres are the dampening forces or balance!   23. Reading this and I just remembered last year I had to rebuild a dash using a mix of parts. I also had to rebuild the speedo... yah man lots of fun, I have pics of that I should post? na.
