  1. Loy, you are miss judging us _ not the other way round. In your OP you mentioned something we here know well. In time you will understand when you get a feel for the bike after some long days in the saddle. If you enjoy mechanics then you will be hard pressed to find a more rounded group of experienced easy going guys then here at VR. It's up to you, post a question or post results, maybe we learn from you? We'll see By the way Loy help us help you and others to keep the servers spinning just $12.00 for an add free site Patch
  2. Wow! A wife, 12 maidens in waiting and Carl is still wanting more. Thinking Carl's favorite 8 track goes like this: "See me ride out of the sunsetOn your color TV screen Out for all that I can get If you know what I mean Women to the left of me And women to the right Ain't got no gun Ain't got no knife Don't you start no fight 'Cause I'm T.N.T. I'm dynamite T.N.T. and I'll win the fight T.N.T. I'm a power load T.N.T. watch me explode"
  3. Not knowing how you feel about the Wing's? I think we have all met riders our age and then some that find them a very good fit. The FJ is an amazing sport touring bike, but not having room to stretch out makes for a short days ride, I find.
  4. Have to agree with Ph, it's a big deal and what about cruise? You could try making a cluster just to see what it entails, that might change your mind.. If the bike has been parked for many years you have many little things to contend with as is; and you really should ride it for a season to know how she fits you.
  5. Perhaps the family we create, nurture and protect is our greatest achievement. Thinking for many of us riding was what we did or do for ourselves kind of our Zen connection to the countless miles weathered hot, wet, cold and for me in one trip a week of snow. Younger I remember how great the saddle felt early in the mornings; how stopping along the way was inspiring, many times just to the sound of the engine ticking down, the smell of spruce in the air, the taste of a good smoke, a short walk to stretch our legs, a quick glance at the map then off again. Oh and lets not forget the old kick start days:) The memories stay with us we earned them even tho you won't find them on the mantle for others to touch we share them and we inspire. Lets not forget we earned them, the sport helped us manage our life commitments and, as they change so must we. On my last run to anywhere, the bike rolled over my foot braking some parts; now I kept the trip going but man it took way to long to heal, now I'm 4 months into a shoulder injury, 10 years ago seems like I could heal in under a week!? If Zen is freedom then we know it and can find it again, once we find that new to us path.. Below a couple of good memories, one is my oldest on one of the Kats
  6. While I believe in the saying "my bike my way" raising the limit has a cost and a risk attached. 1st the valve springs are old and will likely not be able to keep up: this can cause missing at the higher range. Once they become that stressed they will begin to crack and miss throughout, then break. The wrist pins are also at risk at higher reversed velocities (tdc) Again in an older machine you would need to factor oil pressure_ any loss would have adverse affect on the crank pin journals for the same reason mentioned above. Just a bit of hard earned experience..
  7. So I have zip experience with Ignitech units but, I can say that it is best to first get the ignition system in order before you trying any adjustments. The opportunity to tune advance is interesting, but my experience would be to tune within the ranges that best suit your typical riding. Too much early piston pressure can do a lot of damage. In any case the speed of which the ignition will work is crucial to the end tuning results. Again a gap test would serve you well.
  8. Mine was a Rupp?? pretty sure. For many years I couldn't ride so I concentrated on other aspects of life. Seems to me our elders back in the day use to say "You will know when its time" to almost any dilemma facing us. Don't believe you can keep a good man down or change his mind once he has reflected sufficiently on any matter; but, he may willingly choose a different path to explore.
  9. Unfortunately I went though the aftermath with the police after my sons accident while he was in emergency. There was quite an exchange between us. I had been called to the scene and was well aware of what took place and the speeds involved, also knew all the witnesses to the accident. I took offense to his allegations and ended up pressing the matter through the change of command. You could say he picked on the wrong dad. Recently I came across a local neighborhood man in his sixties cut off by a left turning dimwit. He too was pronounced DOA but had in fact pasted on the stretcher. I still see his mangled bike in the intersection every time I go for smokes. I had a sudden stop that caused my helmet to fly off, this was a full face helmet.
  10. The details that Bongo provided above are well detailed and worth your consideration. If you follow the instructions for soaking you will need to change oil after so I would make the best use of this and soak the rings as well. Patch
  11. As mentioned above I would check the side stand relay just to rule it in or out. Make sure the charging system is working, I gather the engine runs. For each light that isn't working there is a common ground, so I would in this situation: Check for voltage on feed ( colors change) Of course the bike needs to be switched to run ect... Check ohms from ground lead (black wire) to frame. switch off or connector separated.. If you use a test light/probe then if you probe at hot a wire say of flashers or brake light and if it lights, move to the black/ground with the light/probe, this will cause a path to ground if slipped in through the back of the connector still connected to choice of circuit. If the light goes on when the probe is on the backside of the black wire (don't forget to switch the light -say brake peddle) this will show a fault in the ground. Below I linked 2 wiring diagrams http://www.venturerider.org/wiring/90-93%20Yamaha%20Venture%20DA%20Wiring%20Diagram%20Rev%20C.pdf http://www.venturerider.org/wiring/90-93%20Yamaha%20Venture%20DA%20Simplified%20Circuit%20Diagram%20Rev%20C.pdf
  12. What a weird thing... And is the charging system working? You mentioned you checked relays, have you checked the relay for the side stand?
  13. Did this all start after "also swapped out side stand switch,"??
  14. Did this all start after "also swapped out side stand switch,"?? I have seen similar reverses as you mention in your OP. Usually the reason is a forgotten ground or missed reconnect. An example, you have no flashers, can you measure power at the connector to the flasher behind the plastics? If so this is like the dash you can measure power. Now can you measure power in to the flasher? Remember your probe is set to a different ground path so if you read 12 Volts then you would think its a broken/missing ground! Same flasher connector power feed side of connector one wire is or should be hot, the other wire is ground - now using the ground side of the connector, switch to ohms and measure ohms from connector ground to the bikes frame! If the reading moves to 0000 then that ground is good, So if there is voltage then you have a bad ground or no ground. ohms will show open/broken circuit! You need to test your grounds.
  15. What year of bike are we talking about? 1990 V Royal
  16. Here's the link for the class system repair below. Now on mine after following through this, I still had issues although less often. The following year I opened it up again and using my phone I took some closeups and found additional pin sloderings that had fractured. After fixing those it has been problem free for a couple of years now. http://www.venturerider.org/forum/showthread.php?493-CLASS-E4-Error-Repair Not sure I understand the neutral switch question? If your bike is in gear and the side stand is down the engine will not turn over nor should you want it too! If in gear and you pull the clutch in she should turn over, that would be expected - providing the side stand is up. Only if it is in neutral will the engine turn over while the side stand is down, this is what is expected since I believe 1985 or 86.
  17. Well if you're pressed, you can always old school and do without for now. Remove the cap and carefully push it onto the spark plug conductor, secure with a tie rap. Straight down no side to side! Don't forget to change the oil.
  18. Looks like an easy fir for you. 2 unmentioned items: 1st there seems to be a minor oil leak? Next is, whenever an engine is run with a miss or as in this case a constant no ignition - the vacuum generated by the intake stroke of that piston will still draw fuel from the carb. So this means the oil in the crankcase has a reduce viscosity, and should be changed... true story(:
  19. I experimented with an injection system some years on a German unit. I had a sequential ignition firing sequence, the Bosh coils are very expensive and had a proven track record. Those coils deceive when measured, (2 coils per cylinder) but I was convinced that they had reached max duty _even though they fired. The coils proved to be the answer. The moral here is, it's not about chances they all drop dead at the same time rather, how well/fast they charge and discharge and more about duty cycles then ohms readings. If you believe the above then you can relate this to my mention on that 1 pickup coil as well.
  20. I also wrote to Shinko this morning and received this just now. "Hi Patch, Thank you for contacting Shinko Tire USA. The Shinko 777 series tire would be a great choice for this motorcycle. These have the same speed rating and the rear tire has a higher load rating than the stock tires that came on this motorcycle. We appreciate your interest in Shinko tires. Sincerely, Kyle Kosberg Western Power Sports/Shinko"
  21. Yes it has to be ignition. If it is all 4 then its TCI or harness to and or from the control box.
  22. “ is that often your point gets lost in the brush” True I know this can happen during my postings. I will usually see a question though where others read noise; and if I can, I will go out of my way to help the OP. Here I did not see a question in the OP, I read a comment that he purchased! I’ll try a different tack; my experience with Shinko was mixed. I found them to be what Shinko claims that they are, an economical based tire with a long tread ware expectancy. I also found that I did not have confidence with the performance. This is because I like to push a bike through whatever the road offers. Here was my mistake in choosing Shinko 230s; I don’t fit an economy based tire. With regards to Shinko 777 every review I have read is saying that they are an economy cruising tire. This may be a case of myth becoming legend I’m not sure of this, so I made a call to their technical support. They tell me the 777 are a softer compound and while rated as a cruiser tire the load rating was high enough for the Venture. Now for some of the other points, I choose not to run Dunlop’s that’s not to say that someone else shouldn’t. The Elites have been around for a long time, lots of guys swear by them. Elites were what were on my Venture when I purchased it. Outside of the1200 klms to bring her home that is all the riding experience I have with them! The Dunlop brand are not on any of my bikes and it’s been that way since the early 70s I think. While on my tour last year my Shino’s were spoiling my ride. I chose to change them in Montreal, a large Canadian size market and where I expected more options then what turned out to be the case. I decided on the Metzeler brand even though I read there had been issues with their early releases! I like the tires, they go well for my style of riding; but the Michelin proved to still be a better tire through deeper puddles. If I am veg with peripherals in a post this could be based on value or how I see its pertinence. I don’t ever claim anything past my experience. I have been open with the forum on my written English
  23. Well looking like a wet one tomorrow, likely you will want to ride through. If not we can share coffee at Lake Chestermere 20 minutes east of the city anytime after 1:00
