Post 16, 17, 18, I KNOW eh, and how many times have they.... to us? May I.. So in 79 two of us in the old Marconi dungeon tool crib looking for "the 1" drive drill" There was me with no schooling and the other with a certificate of smarts! There were 2 such drills dating back to the 60's; we'd sometimes use them to drive the tower winches, one worked and one not so much! Late night and we were preparing for a tower project in a hurry to hit the road! So which one? "I got an idea" said the smarter of the two of us, I'll rap a rag around the chuck and you trigger it quickly! Thanks for posting the numbers and the plug. Some assumptions: My first thought is combustion temp is too low? Next and is what I don't think right about the design of this conversion is that, this setup is in fact a 4 into 1 adapter, not an intake manifold! This poses a stoichoimetric problem that you will not find a work-around for. What is missing is the obvious lack of plenum. This can be broken down into more challenges such as port turbulence which is a big one, then fuel distribution which in this configuration you will not be able to correct through jetting or mixing volumes! Try this, run a scale of rpm's for 30 seconds shut the engine down and quickly pull all the spark plugs as fast as you can, how wet are they? Know the throttle positions for your next test ride; divide your throttle at the handlebar, note your cruising rpm then when you get back remove your un-tuned air filter setup, looking down at the butterfly, what is your guess of position when you twist the throttle to match cruising speed? 1/4/ 1/3 1/2??? Or snap a picture of it. Think of this, this setup compounds ambulance from the induction to the back of the intake valve. Can you smooth it out? Not likely, so you have to expect separation of air/fuel mixtures. Another tell sign is the rate of which rpm's climb, if it somewhat smooth, steady and slow (what the girls) verses smooth and fast; then it is an induction issue. What is your compression readings at 5 cranks? Do the numbers climb quickly or slow to reach max pounds? Patch

I see your point, especially under cold or wet conditions where crushing spark is everything. So and but; in this complaint how would you justify the clue of the enricher improving conditions? Doesn't add;) I beginning to think it the EGR??? Yep! -

Not to say it shouldn't be checked but,, ignition misfires would show up where he says he isn't having problems. Just sayinnn -

Hmm, I could say yes but each turn of the set screws effect the outcome. Not sure I have the english to explain what or where the balances lie. on First we must expect a starting point; So I have a unique tool I use for carbs, cars, bikes or benching experiments. I can run a plenum completely off scale yet hit posted standards. If you're still following then here is what I am trying to say, Vacuum is a chase,,,, one overly high will compensate for one short of expectation. When balancing 4 into one harmonious unit, you need start off an equal platform! At throttle yes, I would find little argument at idle (regarding sync) tho/ and while vac is @ the highest, its a crap shoot because of the other variables that work against the camouflage of base vacuum... So to answer the question, I say start the process off @ standard, then we have the answers.. I am a high performance guy who enjoys combustion, could care less about the rest, so it has to fit my logic. I've asked Puc to join the conversation, he usually makes sense of my translations so lets wait for him to chime in.. -

Choke does in fact solve all the problems : the enricher is below the throttle plates! so I know it's lean: not necessarily and yes at the same time. The problem becomes that the cycle is lean or starved in this case of both air and fuel! So look, you must bring to spec the carb x 4 each must work as designed; then you must bench set the throttle plates before installing and after you assemble them, or you play with the devil. I am going by memory here but as I recall on this model it is the second port up from the bottom that the bottom of the plate should intersect... Now some will say the top or the bottom of the plate, no argument from me on either, it will start and run either way then you dial up or down your rpm to suit! I set the mix pilot at 1 to 1 1/4 turns out when I know I am jetted correctly, if im running a jet scale to see what works best then I might change the initial setting! Start at 1 1/4 turn after you bench set the throttle plates! This will work providing the carb is in proper order, no leaks anywhere, fuel or air. -

All right lets review. First I'll touch on the compression: compression should be the first check before rebuild of carbs. The compression readings over 5ish strokes speak volumes to the experienced fellow. The ceiling of of the rings represents the overall condition of the pump/engine. A low compression verses a slow to build compression means bottom line the rings are not ceiling/locking. There can be valve seat issues as well and that is proved separately... Moving past valve issues what we need to know is the low standard expectations, will she pull enough low pressure/vacuum to draw fuel and atomize? Storage is a crank that doesn't get to rotate; the pistons and rings remain parked where they stopped. If a piston x 2 stops at the bottom of the jug it is close to or in the taper, if it stops at the top then it is close to the carbon ring at the top of the jug. 1 or a set of valves are open and the others close, either way conditions are not equal! The pilot circuits: What can effect them, we covered blockage, we covered main air jet, we covered plugs, we covered gaskets. So what bench setting mark did you use when you put the carbs together? Does she run or maintain idle when choke is on? Patch -
I disagree! The grease is non conductive this is true, it also does not bleed and that is good! The bullet shaped contact will make local contact, I promise.

Could be air maybe? But did you know that hydraulic fluid from a once opened container can spoil? If it turns out not to be air, I would change the fluid being careful to drain and wipe before refilling. You cap vent is functioning? Patch -
As\mentioned if your front is out of order, things like one fork stiffer than the other, weather that be spring or air related she will want to fall off in a lean. The good one or stiffer one I should say will tend to push her over... The same thing can happen when the front is too high and stiff.

Yes sir Puc both are very good products when applied like you mention. A GF of mine who had been in a rear end collision some years back and suffered severe whiplash really enjoyed my MKII ride but, she couldn't handle the wind buffering for long at all; shame really cause she enjoyed the same adventuring as I! Well I thought about changing the windscreen, or maybe a headrest like some of the old Cades had... I sure liked the way she rode the back, long legged woman, man oh man could she bring life to a campfire.. Yep I remember her fondly certainly worth the head rest idea! What's that song... When We Were Young and not so long ago.. The first ride on my MKII was a rough one, I was way north and leaving late very tired and wanting to ride fast and hard. As it turned out and many of us old timers know, start a ride that way and accent on the hard becomes the game... Well cold rain dark skies endless miles no rest areas, stations or motels, the lights from passing cars trucks, the water they kicked over, I couldn't see thru the bloody thing and made my mind up to cut it down first chance! If on that night I had come across a patrol car I would have flashed him down, thrown my hands up and said, arrest me officer, I must still be wanted somewhere?! I did cut it and just kept doing that till I hit that sweet spot that not only could I see freely over it but that the wind effect was so minimal the bike simply performed better out here in our prairie winds! Well that's my tale of my windscreen, and a sweet memory named Sonya Patch -

Good to see you posting Kev! This dielectric grease stuff just keeps getting rehashed! The location in question is ideal for dielectric grease, zero doubt about it. A thin even layer on all bearing locations. Here's a quote on it's use.. "Does dielectric grease improve connection?Dielectric grease will actually increase voltage breakdown across insulators, especially in the presence of moisture. ... Silicone dielectric grease will prolongconnection life as well as, and have just as good conduction performance, as a properly selected metallic powder grease (conductive grease). "

Thanks for the Link Condor! Yet yesterday I found that even pics that I had imperviously uploaded didn't want to... No big deal just need to adjust. Somehow tho yesterday from my phone I managed to engage Google share??? Man was I pissed! I did a search found I was in good company with many expressing infringement. Its getting to the point or already there "likely" where intellectual property only belongs to the internet mega's, turning on apps, cameras, mikes, gps.... In the long run I believe this new behavior will backfire pushing the world back to 2 cans and a piece of string

New only one Dutchmen before, couldn't get a straight nonevermind from him neither! And Carl, don't think we don't know why - you lost the other riders in the rain - on your way home... Lockup your daughters the desperado Marcarl is comin to play grayer and older now he knows how to break away braking any the rules on his way still sewing oats and rolling in the hay and breaking daughters hearts along the way... LOL

Its small Cha, sits in my right saddle on the hump, always;) They put out quite a bit of heat, the jel fuel tin last a long time. Boils water quick for coffee I being a morning porridge guy... It will shake the frosty mornings out of a tent depending on the type of tent you use, mine are netted top I crack the zip about 4-6" cook breakfast and get dressed in the warmth. Tent's that are more sealed will condense moisture on the sides, so let them dry while prepping your bike. One caution here Cha, never pick the can up with a flame on, the can is hot on top and the jel liquefies under heat; what you do is snuff the flame with the lid is all then after a minute or 2 you screw it down and its jel again. I've had mine for many years, made for a backpack the can is the mass so small. I have polished wind screens and the best and safest way in my opinion; cut it down below your line of site! Absolutely the best mod for it! Tend to your visor and carry anti fog with rain repellent in a small spray bottle from a dollar store! Remember Cha: if you pull in to a station and run thru someones mess then wipe the tires before getting back out there; I use wd40 on a rag I'll keep in the rear pocket sac. When walking to your bike, always stair her down, you want to have a mirror image in your mind of what she should sit like. See a drip? Make sure its not yours, tires nice and round? Disks not showing spots, jugs look clean, forks are up, quick check for bug splatter... Note your mileage at the pumps don't need to be precise; here its LT per 100 klm 1/2 a LT per 100 difference means somethin is up, so fallow the clue or keep an eye on it! If you haven't already change the air box seal, that thing causes more grief with carb slides, valve seat deposits and lost riding time then a nagging wife! For the pennies it worth keep it in good shape. WD40 for quick wipe downs on almost everything is hard to beat, That cloth goes in the other rear pocket, always keep those rear pockets partially zipped! WetOnes a must for seat, helmet inside and out, removing grease off your hands,,, Dry snacks in the trunk, bars, jerky, nuts and sweets, extra water... My opinion never run out of water.
