  1. So heres the truth: Bum and I are just Canadian forward. But we are just the surface. It really is our hope that young remembers stick around. If you choose you will thru your sharing of mistakes under your finger nails, learn confidence. That is really what the sport is about! Dad and Carl set this forum up to carry on well past us old timers. So ask now, gain that confidence but, don't stretch beyond it. What do we have to offer the younger crowd? History, that's real, all we have in words we shared. What you all do with it well we'll be looking down and seeing if you's is using it fairly. (no ego) We lost a lot of great guys over the years. The important thing to remember about forums is that it is always ok to agree to disagree! And, in that is the best of advise we have to share! Don't enter a group experienced with a chip in your eye. Dad taught us all that, and, Lord knows we put him thru the paces that one ting, " OH you really want to know what I think" let me tell ya, you've just been told// Of course Carl is always trying to keep the peace.. yaknow be a Canadian, when really some of us just need to set the roof a blaze yaknow like bros at the kitchen table! For me tho I love/hate everybody equal, because if I don't like them, likely I am meeting their wives at the boarder anyways ( not allowed over,, its just a big miss understanding, of course) The thing is is that this joint of all those that have treated me BETTER is a cool place for a mans mind to hang his hat. Read the old stuff to get to understanding of the wealth of experience, and make that a part of yours. There really is no magic to what we know. So just flow with it, pass it on, just accept as most Canadians do, that we is just better at some thins (knows whats I means)
  2. I hear what your say Bum. As you know I have work on and owned many different motorcycles still own too. Yes I can if I try hard to adjust a rocker to a faint lead but I'd be really hard press to get it to 122 lbs. Yes if I were less confident I would perform the leak down test before I get to the lash! But I'm not so I see more sticky rings then I can tribute to lash issues. Also as you and I know, sludge holds btu's longer than a proper cooling mix. The constant heat that must have been cooking up front there on those jugs and the obvious lack of engine maintenance leads me to think that that engine needs a soak and a rinse But the lesson you bring forward is valid
  3. I came across this Voice segment; I don't usually post this stuff but this one struck a cord with me and knowing the types of Gents we are likely there are many among us reaching out to the less confident we meet along our journeys at a point where there are more years behind us than hills left to climb. An evolving story in my life in making good on a rough start: So out of the guys I hit the streets with were 3 brothers; you may of read me mention "three tongues" well he had 3 brothers 2 of which were always not far away from the the group. Three tongues had training as a street boxer, the middle brother had a natural gift of gab, looked like Donny Osmond. The third and youngest Art decided to study CungFu and live the life. We all here read much of my story but Art became a casual encounter. Many journeys later and while in my traveling days I had a chance encounter with him; I was by then a hardened fellow over following with confidence he was frail stuttered rounded shoulders no eye contact. As the evening turned to night I turned all my focus to him and just listened. I asked him how he felt about his decision to immerse into the life style and could there have been a moment that broke his sprite? NO NO I am very confident in my life style, watch. I must admit watching him in the yard was graceful. Every step was sure footed every strike was textbook. I felt like a blind bull in a china shop! My time in Montreal was always short lived in those days and just like that I was gone. Art decided to get back to spending time with the groups Mum my Mum. One day help her move some stuff he had an accident involving his right wrist severing everything. Eventho there were plenty of witnesses to what and how it happened he spent much time in the hospital for surgery and psychiatry. Turned out he suffered from anxiety. In those days few understood it as a permanent type condition. When I think back I now know every day and several times a day he had to be brave enough to get through each day. His fears were so different than what I had to overcome. As you's know I have a group I work with, all of us have a difficult past and we just get what its like to live with the memories and tendencies rooted in our nature. But we can and do well. So one Friday during C19 we are gathered on the patio and we speak a mix of slang's some french some english some street code. That day a new server was filling in a young guy say 26 named Cole. We caught on to him standing close enough tho looking down leaning on the wall listening in on the conversations. It was a hot day and some can really put it away, my youngest son was sitting with us for a while just soaking it all up. Like me he writes and of course he is still just finding out about my past life. Getting back to this Cole fellow: he serves this guy off to the left who had just sat down and before his beer was served he raises his voice to us in french. He made his way over to our group and shared with us who he ran with in MTL and his way of earning. His history raised a red flag with me and it was time to get him to move on just as my kid sister was joining us. Unfortunately he decided he wanted to stay even tho consensus was to leave. He began demonstrating an interest in sis with much vulgarity and then came his choices. He thought about it for a few seconds made some promises guys like that can't keep and left. However it wasn't the best experience for Cole. As the crowd lessened Cole approached me and we stayed late after closing and chatted. He spoke of some personal things and then after a time I asked, are you being threatened or intimidated by someone? Is there some way I or we can help? And then he told me that he suffered from anxiety. This time I knew better what he was living thru. Question is or was how can I make a difference? Most of us face days, watch our children face their challenges and we share our experiences and confidence that tomorrows always begins with a new sun rise. But, how can we relate to the fear of getting thru today to just face it again and again? I know now wisdom that I can put to words that can ease that kind of pressure. Sure there's medication and if one suffers then one should accept it as a natural part of their life. But if the medication does not allow one to live free and in confidence surely there must be something we can provide? And so I come back to the beginning of this post: Down at the very bottom I am going to share an inspiration that was given me one night. The date is or should be posted of when and who inspired me to pick up the pen again. Make me this one favor in return for sharing it; don't come away with a tragic sense of my youth because, that is simply not how I believe it to be. To get here I needed to live as I once did! The poem has already been copy right, a small piece of a larger collection. PS. I write as I read, if you don't like poetry do yourself a favor and skip it Oh Patches oh Patches speak to me please Make me cry make me bleed I beg you- bring me to my knees my tissue is near to wipe the tears Tell us again in a new way of the 60s 70s and 80s as we dare to peek past another door to your past Wrap it all up spin a tale as close as you dare to keep it real- keep us scared I want to feel your pain and hear of love lost too Patches Oh patches I know no other poet as you Spin our emotions let us feel as you do Why tell us why was early life so cruel to you Why did your mother and others not save or protect you- can it be true How could they beat you to spare you to beat you again and again- seems to cruel How do you trust how do you continue to love after what they did to you Tell us about the gangsters and the mad man that fathered you Patches oh Patches can you still feel your pain- when you write we certainly do Did you really lay your life down for your family and those you called friend- can it all be true I just can’t imagine how hard it must be to be you- we never knew -just what made you Please write some more we need more find another door we need to explore just one more door No one takes me there as when you open those doors it’s true we really want to read more So unlock another door let us peek past into a difficult past that is rightfully yours- please share one more Patches oh Patches how can you pause when we beg to feel more of those years you deplore Patches oh Patches please don’t say you won’t share anymore The end Patch Yates 10/01/12 inspired by Lally
  4. When I saw the pic of the rad hose the first thing I thought was Iron water. I once lived on a strip of land surrounded by fresh water but our well was so high in dissolved iron our heavy filtration system could keep up and was plugged in just 5 month. Or septic was just as bad. PH is a subject I haven't thought of in a long time but I do know that PH is a consideration that is balanced when you are dealing with coolant fluids. Most cleaning solution rely on temperature to reach a performance level. Is why I am aggressive when choosing one where I know I can get away with it. "slow to drain" that can be just as Bum eludes to or it can be sludge? I had this old swamp buggy 4x4 when it was cold my front wheel would drag not turn? I went to drop the diff oil yikes... So I filled it with thinner ran it lightly then drain rinse and repeated. Rich: like Ben says lots of potential reasons for this. So is low compression a cause. 1: deal with the cooling system 2: remove the carbs 3: soak the piston rings That's how I would plan it out. I'm going to vote a firm NO for the valve lash as the compression is too high for leaking valves.
  5. In which case I would be straight up with the shop, after all you are paying by the hour.

Personally I think the people and the courts are moving in the right direction. You'll note that past contractors are not immune to liability back 10 years. Many many times I have expressed that our ability to remain in business revolves around our ability to remain insured as a business. All our work was done above board documented and shared responsibility with like mind professionals. Each one of the contractors had to have proof of knowledge and coverage in the field for which they bid. Sub contractors are the backbone of construction. I have never known a sub trade to be held liable for 10 years though. Product manufactures yes. There is a kink in the maintenance repair work in this case that has been documented and will generate leverage! Epoxy when miss used in concrete repair is both common and misunderstood. It can not be used just anywhere. Nor is it a substitute for approved concrete repair or restoration work without following procedures; on this all the certified manufacturers are covered. Who isn't covered are those that were under contract to manage and approve the repair work on behalf of the owner or charter. This is going to be industry shaking by the time it concludes and, will have far reaching effect across our boarders.
  7. Coming back from a long trip some years ago my 91 began humming at speed. Then I noticed when parking the bike that th rollback was excessive. I pulled the final drive apart and found the pic below. I'll say this, it would be unwise to ride until you go thru it, NO shortcuts.
  8. Just my thoughts on how I would approach this project. But first I would be hard pressed to assume the bike is toast, they just don't have that reputation. I agree with Bum on the flushing part. I however would be more aggressive in choice of chemicals. That said after flushing I would pressurize the cooling system and monitor for pressure drop. Now in this case a leak down might mislead you. At 122 the crankcase pressure must be up? When we run into that issue testing becomes a game of experience to determine or separate the issue of having pressure on both side of the piston rings. Look up "a case for fogging" here on the forum, tried proven and tested, its also safe. For me there is little doubt she'll come around.

Well I have worked across this country since the late 60's My insights into large projects was gift to me by a building inspector that showed an interest during his off hours. Since that was in the 80's and I as mentioned continued to work across the country I have met the odd one that either thru arrogance or in disagreement with standards (Canada still leads building code requirements) has bumped into one of my english efforts to their superiors. I can't recall a time that a proper didn't soon decision followed. The inspectors responsibility is to perform due diligence in accordance with the approved drawings and stamps that are on record for the project permit. In most not all we have a stamped approved in good standing safety, architect or engineer for each schedule of the project. They are not to be argued with by building inspectors, period. Structural of any kind in this country must be drawn by and stamped by engineering. He must approve of the methods, products and environment their engineered instructions are follow. Here why: due diligence for his license, insurance and every stake holder of the property. The inspector has to abide by this rule. The only exceptions that come to mind is if there is a amendment to the permit or that one schedule effects another schedules liability or the neighboring properties.
  10. Remind me as the thread is quite long, The bike system is charging, the coils checked out, the grounds check out. Did you check the pick up coils? And fuel is getting through the carbs? All the connections have been cleaned?
  11. Time to pass your knowledge on to the grand kids. The bowl drains are small like 3/16 maybe?
  12. For kinky guys like myself that enjoy fooling with combustion and have spent in excess of 10gs on a single experiment I have had my share of wins and losses. I found this video looking for simple demonstration of the dynamics at play when charging a combustion cycle. The CV carbs are much more complex but the principles at play remain. We have some threads here where we dive into fluid dynamics CV carbs..... Just one other comment: Today we can choose to not use a throttle plate to control air/fuel charges. This in turn causes other effects such as decreasing vacuum but that decrease also lowers piston drag making for quicker response and more energy delivered to the crank. Has a lot to do with the HP/torque ratings we can achieve with smaller displacements. Now you know what I know;) Show the vid to the kids
  13. Yaknow new members like you, problem child 1968 and others make this club a cool hangout. Unfortunately no chicks swept me off my feet Saturday night so I made it home relatively early; tho I was feeling somewhat like Kris singing Sunday Mornin.... Well good onya The brake peddle sounds like a week return spring and some lube needed on the bush the peddle pivots around.
  14. OK if you go back to post 8 looking at the coils the red/white wire is the path to the secondary side of the coil. So if you probe from the red/white wire to the end of the high tension cable there must be a reading. You've proven they fire so the can't be open or broken. The next thing that is troubling me is the burn boot. I'd like to see a pic of the plugs say with the cylinder # showing. Often we have seen these old bikes with modified jetting. This can lead to heavy carbon build up which leads to detonation problems. This takes a compression test to be able to rule on. You can borrow the tester from a local Indy shop.
  15. Well I'm going to print this off and look at the schematics again. Surprised a bit that the color codes are only two colors. On the other hand if I am reading this correctly the coils are firing. You say measured twice but at what temperature? So I'll right a new list of known symptoms as listed in the thread. A question: When the bike is running is it charging?

In my experience complacency is the biggest factor. Last night when I was walking around the club I walked over to a part of the center I hadn't been in a long while. I see the North/West side corner of the build wall has had many re pointing repairs done to it. None of which were professionally executed. That work was a waste of money. We have had a couple of down pores here after weeks of crazy heat waves. The exterior walls are completely saturated and of course the concrete upper foundation wall is spalling the rebar is this with rust. I haven't concern of major collapse but certain much of the large brick will bulge then fall. I put tougher a plan some years back for a large shopping center in another city for structural work as well as modernizing the exterior. The developer hired a new property manager after submitting the project turn everything upside down. I walk for the project at that moment, years into it they have more mess on there hands now then at the start. The property will likely be sold at a loss to the investment group. So goes to show you the process can get pretty messed up by the unknowing serving. At least 2 more buildings are now condemned in Miami this week, is it clear to anybody why now, how old were the reports. Complacency.
  17. LOL Must say you seem be working with much diligence, nice to see. A pic of the for plugs would be nice to see from the bottom looking up. Quick building carbon on plugs such as these almost new ones is a sign of poor combustion heat. The good news is your coil voltage reading are close to the battery voltage, a sign of a good harness. The gap test should be a minimum of 7/16 th if memory serves. What causes this high voltage is the secondary side of the coil. Now this is also very important, a cold reading is or can be misleading. I find a quick check for spark test at least gets us started as me might get lucky. But its the hot coils that cause the intermittent problems more often. Check with the gap tool checks the whole system the probing of the individual components is confirmation and where the money gets spent. nice work
  18. Going to try and keep this short?? Often guys turn carb syncing as a cure idle issues which really is not what syncing is all about. The first trick of the mind is to level the readings out as the solution. Fact is is that what you are doing is reading vacuum only on the intake strokes that can be generated by 1 properly working cylinder effort in rotating the crank. If we want to balance airflow only then so be it. But it will not smooth out the idle or lead to a more equal fuel air charge. Everything we do when building and tuning is about transferring reciprocating force into rotating / torque as efficiently as design will permit. This is where we get into Volumes of fill capacity. The throttle plates are the most troublesome restriction to filling capacity. They also represent the most outbalance in intake flows, however they do provide mixing of the 2 part charge. I don't know when or how tuning became so grouped into one event? Tuning requires adapting to engine condition as a whole. If in the case of volume we need to understand the ability of the strokes to muscle thru the 4 required strokes. Carbon buildup hinders this process especially for volume capacity. Ignition triggers and voltage failures are both common and easily solved and should be the second test when working on an old machine after compression.
  19. Just to close the comment/remarks drawer, this membership here in the club has given me more over the years than I have been able to return in kind. (I think that's english) Your plugs are showing 2 different issues, so let the guys know the plug number, the caps will need attention and is a proper place to start. The wet plug will lead you to a path that will generate the quickest results. There is a tool I recommend that is cheap and easily found call a gap tester. I always ride with mine in the saddle bag. Say $10.00, using it just cuts down on the work or, will certainly point you/us to the right location (s). One of the clubs here in Calgary is closing permanently, it is our old guy hangout in these parts. I'll be away for a bit likely till tomorrow afternoon, as we all raise the roof one last time. All the steps are listed in Terry's thread models are different procedures remain the same. Just don't skip over the questions or measure halfway; and you'll come out knowing how to help the next guy that buys an old bike
  20. So yes as for the popping coming from the carb. The "backfire" means just that. What happens is just like what Terry is going thru. The combustion area becomes to wet, every so often the coil will fire which causes a misfire. How does it happen? Glad you asked In this case and with this ignition system there are 2 reasons for it: The coils are not being triggered in sync with the engine timing. This is what we are looking for as to what the cause is. The next reality is this system is based on "wasted spark" that means a coil is triggered on every exhaust stroke as well! I am going to briefly explain combustion, my hope is that you can visualize the single event that begins the combustion cycle: Each combustion has a duration (time) this is further explained through propagation (the progression of ignition to the fuel/air charge) This can be visualized by 1 single sheet of tissue crumpled up into a ball the lit at the top - as the flame spreads the tissue and flame change shape or propagate the time this takes is called "duration"! The exspansion is the energy that drives the piston the crank and the valve train and that is continuations. So if the duration is to long then the backfire will light the next charge as it enters past the intake valve on the intake stroke causing the "backfire"! Next you misinterpret my disadvantage comment. NO reason for you to know my background but enough to say I have worked thru many disadvantages turning them into advantages. I'll share this too: I have been working with a 38 year old that was hit by a train suffering many injuries including head trauma. He is visually not the man he use to be, he walks like a toy soldier, his beautiful loving girlfriend and mother asked me to help him. To be honest with all I didn't believe I could but I found a way and I now know he can, So I persist because he tries. I have a small group of PTSD that I work with as well. Each one of us is different but none of us ever laugh at the other unless we all laugh together. Oh and I also train good people to defend...... None of or any of the above is done for profit. I think I am qualified to know a bit about disadvantage to advantage
  21. I posted the above yesterday as the forum went dark. The new format for the forum doesn't seem to lend itself to the format I am use too. So what ever are the new cut and past or quote and comment tricks are, are beyond me. You'll have to open the quotes and read thru
  22. Obviously you found a gap in our collective memories. Buts there's hope Dad will likely right a software patch soonish
