@N2MQK PA OK we accept your apology but you owe us a breakdown or another problem to work
-
My opinion regarding both yours and JB recent first post were excellent post from a troubleshooting perspective! The problem for Carl is more like Puc and I, we really provide Carl with the best of his migraines. But that is only cause we care so much about him! If we didn't do for him as much as we try too, then he would spend much more of his time playing in traffic, give a while you'll see So ATF was never a good idea tho at first and many decades ago it was common place to use it for stuck piston and rings. What we found out is that the ATF would flash at combustion temperatures cause a varnish to the honing. If carbon removing was easy to do the Direct Injection in gasoline engines would have been a better form the port injection systems and would lest much longer than 20k miles. I have read and seen including on my own stuff that there really isn't mush passive chems that work all that well, and I'll leave it at that. In the past with the link below I have achieved as much as 22 lbs per sq reductions after treatments just as described in the post but, it takes soaking time. The creep I you will also soak the valves after spraying it thru intake and exhaust ports, then the running cycles do the rest... The final results aren't know for a couple miles tho.. https://www.venturerider.org/forum/showthread.php?137296-A-Case-for-Fogging&highlight=case+fogging https://www.venturerider.org/forum/showthread.php?141445-87-VR-carb-problem&highlight=case+fogging

Guess its time to tell the kid the truth about the club, so, here is where you are hanging out How many of us wish we were peeking over Carl's shoulders as he reads? Between mine, Pucs and these new detailed threads, Carl must be taking time off of work to stay caught up! LOL It will be interesting to get the readings Puc mentioned off the charging system. Yes I would use the SeaFoam in the crankcase, but I'd use cheap oil for the continued flushing. I would also try turning in your pilots 1/2 turn for now until you can lower the rpm to adjust them correctly. If you find this doesn't improve by increasing the rpm after you turned the down you can go back. The concern we have with the stator is in part because it is not belt driven it as we know is driven straight of the end of the crank. Nothing, is for nothing, it there is a short in the system then the low rpms likely are not producing enough power to generate past the short and may be why she gives up at a thousand!? So best we just get it checked off the list

Try a bypass at the petcock. Are you in the Calgary area?

Looking for a place to post this Ignition system explanation so here it is. I watch these at higher speed setting on youtube to cut down the viewing time. Keep in mind that TCI and CDI work differently: https://www.sportdevices.com/rpm_readings/CDI_and_TCI.htm#:~:text=CDI%20Ignition%20makes%20the%20spark,using%20a%20SCR%20(Thyristor).&text=This%20type%20of%20ignition%20makes,before%20the%20spark%20is%20done.

Mach, in a forum or club like ours we try to share knowledge sometimes its very specific other times it takes the form of a more general understanding in theory! Analyzing a complaint over the net then coming up with a plan can take time. Yours was very specific containing all the clues I needed to understand the main issues! As I mentioned you had already gone thru much of what we needed to know in your first post. The problems you found or created afterwords are incidental from my point of view. I also mentioned that your procedures were out of order and is why you find yourself where you are at the moment. You said the carb was rebuilt; now you say it was cleaned changing only minor parts! The reason I asked about the jets is very clear to me and others. The pairing is a general notation and is a valid one. Within the forum many know where I was going with it and, some rookie somewhere sometime down the road will read it and learn from the queue. As you mentioned you have been a lurker for a long time then you also know I am not a halfway kind of fella, all in or all out. Your answers are a combination of the first half and the second half. The first clue was the pilots. Assumptions are they say The Mother to many of our problems, not answers Best of luck to you

Sorry Ben! What were we discussing again?

I guess you have made contact with cowpuc or viewed his channel, he knows most of these hard to find issues on this model. If he's not pitching tent in the dessert he'll chime in.

Like you guys it is difficult to asses what is going on and for what reasons. Casey sometimes your post force me back into my comfy chair backrest! And your spelling is near perfect too.. I really like Zag's KISS approach to the veritable intake (which is essentially what it is) I have rebuilt many of them over a range of engines and yes the actuators can be a headache. One of the issues with most sport/performance engine tuning's has be the marketing behind fatter jets, richer this and that's for reasons not well understood.. The switch to LAMBDA reading is finally changing the thinking by arming the buyers with easy to understand measures. Now the fact remains that these over rich mixes have shorten engine life cycles. There yes I agree with Puc a compression test will serve OP well here to see what he is building over.. We spend large amounts of $$$ for every CC of air we can pack in so carbon just simply destroys the efforts not to mention pre ignition issues! Which brings again to light what TCI and advance setting is she running? Pipes: The rule is equal out for 8 to 12" eq. to port dia. that stays in place unless we move collecting or collector above when demands fit the decision. With or without overlap we strive to maintain a flow or a draw out and is why we collect. Also this might be a touch technical but, we need keep in mind percussion waves which will disrupt flow causing it to reverse! Good thread because y'all make it so

Would you like me to keep breaking it down for you? If you feel it is too overwhelming I would suggest you develop an action plan first, then repair and test each repair before moving on.

After any flooding oil change is expected. The word should have read (reducing). The thinner the oil the more creep it tends to have. Just as a side bar: the viscosity and tolerances have effect on pressure as well as cushioning
-
Yes they are at the limits. Another solid report back I must say! So what to do next eh? Usually we see this effect at higher rpm ranges where it can develop a consistent miss do to angle which of course carries thru effecting ignition duration which means time laps in fuel ignition! At zero advance the timing is set @5*.... you can of course check that with a timing light off of #1 . Of course we cannot recommend not changing them, that is your decision but they are due. Again my initial query of voltage at the coils would still be in the direction I would head first. Another would be pulling one fuse at a time as the bike struggles thru its low rpm. The first one I would pull is the head lamp. Curious to know what is the battery voltage when the engine slows down? I assume you know for a fact that all jugs keep firing at low rpm? In all cases the best ignition system checks are done using a gap tester, here the minimum gap is a solid 1/4" larger being better.

SO boys we have a brother that feels he is not so much at home these days. I have had the pleasure of swapping stories withem. I was taken by his take on book covers. I think I get his view but maybe deep down it isn't so? We exchanged a bit, I posted these to him one on one and, sadly I have not had return from him since! So has anybody body seen/heard from our brother Poppa Phil ? "Is this about race Phil?" (me) "And here I has the audacity to think no one was listening." (Phil)

Smoke On the water.. Well I play a band in my yuth before I was tucked away, this song was one of them. Now whiles life was a fording my steel I found a deeper Purple that kind of fit, here it is by Grand Funk

Wow what a great song for us in the club, "I" that other kind" so right on! You should drop in to Mama's cafe, we kind of just let loose there... We share so much and spin vinyl till the wolves howl. Just the other night Puc and I (after the kids went to bed) start talking bout Tip, I calls her Tippy cause she has to tippy toe past Puc to take my calls! Anyways, turns out we (Puc and Me) both appreciate the same things about Tip/Tippy which as I read many years back is a result of brain wiring,,,, anyways kind of a long story and Puc was drinking Pepsi straight up and couldn't get to sleep. I on the other hand was mixing my Pepsi with Lambs Dark, hopin he fall asleep so as I could play Tippy our song>>> But I think Puc has cought on to Tip/Tippy and Me cause he was playing "My girl Bill" really I think Tippy prefers my weeping melodies https://youtu.be/Ki78MK9JywE

I like it! Why is it this song reminds me of traveling the West in the Late 70's not sure? I do know in those days and thru my travels I found being stuck broke down is sometimes one of the loneliest moments remember thru my life. Yet as I recall there is really no better place thru my travels then being broke down in these Prairies, somehow and thru that mean heat wave dancing off the black tops there always seem to be a Puc wondering round willing ready to share a jug and a helping hand! Some even come along with Chicks named Tip Here is one of my favorites from Led... As @LittleSparkPlug can attest to

not yet it is too early to think past the flooding effects she just went thru. tho check the oil for reducing caused by gas migrating down the jugs....

RSV down while on vacation in Black Hills..uggghhh

so for next time, try standing the bike up, then with full bowls and help I guess so she can't tip over, rap the bowls as was mentioned. -
Eh guys, want to thank y,all for sharing in this thread; your thoughts and comments have been very rewarding. Certainly a symbol to which this club remains a well woven and worn sweater. I want to post a song that dates back a touch, first tho, I know there is something of a disconnect between our to countries. As a "Kanuckian" we have often witnessed first hand this "American Experiment" triumphs, falls and losses: they as always have been felt and discussed North of 49 and, is how JFK said it was meant to be, and I agree. While still adding to my music collection I came across a couple tunes that struck me tho not both related to this post, I wish to share this with y'all hoping you see and feel as much pride in it as we do here to the North. Was this symbol the makings of Hollywood or of the people; thinking now the last of many last Spock lines

Well @Surfrider I have a secret to share; I envy what you remember and feel for that life and that man you called Dad! We do not all receive such a blessing to begin our journey with. When I learned to read I wasted no time becoming more than a fly on a fence post. One lesson that always stuck with me is the one sure thing about energy & matter can not be destroyed. Yes we can manipulate it, we can reduce it but in the end and in some shape and form it remains. So as was your Dad's energy is still his energy; and so as I see and believe it all that he was he still is, and lives within children, grandchildren for generations to come! Want proof
