Good stuff guys! Rod you know how I feel about this and also what I use when I'm shooting a problem. Of course I haven't the fancy equipment you have but then again I do keep more girlfriends and so less disposable tool kit $$$ But for others reading, one strand will show continuity or proper voltage yet not have the capacity for load. Coils or windings produce the resistance assuming that is what we are shooting at, without that you have a dead short. If we have voltage that measures well but can't carry the required amperage then its kind like a knock at the door only the muscle needed to actuate the door simply isn't present... The other side that trips some of us is the return or grounds completing the circuit, if the ground can't handle the load the same happens but on the other side of the door... Signal voltage is different tho, we are not looking for muscle we are actually reading the noise it makes and so care must be taken when shooting controls such as electronic modules.

A simple trick that flies in the face of Einstein tho aligns with Galileo, is to simply open the bleeder and the fill spout, fill the cup full, place a catch basin up high and allow to drain. If after say an hour the catch basin is still not collecting then you will need to disassemble until you find the blockage. Sometimes it is rust related other times it is as Luv mentioned, on the 86 I had to remover and clean the cup, not a hard job but it is tight to remove. I cleaned it and blew out the passage there is a conductive float which should also be cleaned. The rubber line should be check for collapsing as well, then bleed at Spence said.

a few words on an unfriendly shop keyboard so skip past my spelling... In all project bike needs a plan. First there is the simple stuff, the obvious things we see and make sense.. Bikes these ages have like mods some well done others just poor attempts. Start with the basics, compression testing is a basic, leak downs are followups; a for example could be lash issues, cracks, or misaligned ring gaps! In OP's first postings the compression numbers state, the engine is tight there no leak down is necessary and offers no additional guidance regarding trouble shooting! This thread is classic volume and ratio issue, period. And our club has all the tools in the form of experience to get thru such. The problem on both sides of the net table is trust, ask we answer. Are all problems easy to correct; no and explaining the reasons are technical so choose what and how much you are ready to learn or choose to trust and follow the shared experience. Electrical problems are the most common with old bikes regardless of brand name. Like timing angles and combustion pressures the theory is not for every one, but the basics with minimum investment and feedback the club can walk you thru what ever the results are. Pick a project bike and describe the issues, answer the questions with results and allow our experience to fill in the gaps. It can be a lot of fun and, in the end it remains your accomplishment!

Not sure you will see this but I can add a bit... MiCarl is correct the gaskets are leaking. The rear plug show signs of light recent carbon only the redish is fuel type for the most part. The business end of both look fresh enough. The front ones tho show cold so is where I would start! First check voltage at the coils, looking for close to battery volts, 12ish. Then check for spark you - can gap test or, if you have an old timing light use it on the front ones... Note: the spark testing method @Marcarl suggests is part of his therapy and NOT supported my the membership! If the spark test taste good then check carbs

The final drive post you haven't my experience with. Take a look at the picture below, consider the causes of such a failure, then consider the potential outcomes As you see by the pictures the threaded shank fractured some 90% before the remaining materials twist action. Now picture your drive shaft, now picture the angle after the wheel jammed, to where was that defection stress transferred? So in the name of shared experience: if the lash increases or you hear a groaning noise down low park your ego and take a peek. You mentioned the 455 being balanced and blueprinted used for towing, can you not see the contradiction as it relates to fuel economy? Assuming you understand why we use the term balance & blueprinted, have you ever known a balance and blueprinting not match to the cam, intake and carbs targeting a high rpm range? Vacuum is a sliding scale its higher or lower readings are based at throttle position angles scale wise, yes, can it teach a somebody with a heavy foot to back off, yes and was the marketing behind the economy gauges in the 70's, agreed. Does it apply to the 455 balanced and printed in a land yacht pulling and RV, well that is humorous in this so called "expert" opinion! I had no idea you had no idea what that implies when you used the term "balanced and blueprinted" and for that I apologize for embarrassing you! You mentioned your kind of tubing manifold and, you notice the invite to engineering comments? I with purpose avoided comment but for someone mindful of economy I might add you have once again confused the principles that apply.. Time for a battery maybe in that meter? This is why I prefer the automotive automatic meters, kind of like measuring voltage at many points over a bike or car, if we forget to monitor house voltage well where is the loss in the harness or the battery -

By memory side stand is the 1st one on the left, and I think pump was the 4th? The good news is it is in chapter 7 for you model. Testing: well I like the method you just perform on a bike this old. Like Fool just mentioned the next step for guys who enjoy this troubleshooting part of the game, we now have discovered a potential hidden/hard to find problem. So we want to subtract it! Most know I suggest reading the voltage at the coils first thing, however, what I've realized over the years is that I and others know why and what to expect for what will read low. That however does not lay out the basics for understanding The Why's. Put it to you's this way, if you now read the voltage at the coil instead of resistance and you find a lower than expected say 10V you know it is coming from that leg of the harness some 30 years on in its life! Its not always a connection, sometimes its the wire! So the way above is just another doorway in. The above does not replace the impedance measures of the coils, the coils might be good yet the harness not be: the coils being a part of the larger picture! Don't wish to get off track or complicate matters but, the magic happens when you dissever an unexpected reading's : there's a problem lets break it down moment and isolate it, and is what we mean by subtracting! Testing the secondary: well in theory yes you should but because we may doubt the harness, have not yet subtracted it, not sure it is the best choice tho, The readings should be 13ish I would bold enough to say the difference in the harness would only matter if you were on the edge of passing them. Fool your thread was the last of my reading last night, man trips like that eh, make our loved ones wonder why we do it There was some good input can't remember the fellows name tho. In the end which was the most likely cause? the black wire at the corner of the battery rack? This thread will serve other for years to come -
Be careful on that T-Can it is a notorious for left turns off the highway don't lockup that rear wheel;)

So I should record all these measurements at a cold start, and then after a ride, and take the meter along and if it acts up, stop, unplug the tci and check? Good thing my tci is duck taped to the top of my airbox, very easy access. Yes that would be best -

I am going to open the schematics and take a fresh look right now Spence I'll get back to you with a fresh look at things. Now to be clear, when the bike fails, the engine stops firing on all 4 jugs period? Its not a miss like or loss of power? -
So from here, it sounds to me to be, the pinion! That unit may be defective, if it is, consider yourself fortunate that you noticed it on the stand and not on the road Having said this I agree with with Arizona but when I do it I first install it loose like he said then spin the wheel by hand, then engage 1st gear and spin it again by hand, now if the shaft is engaged it won't rotate but you will be able to feel the lash! If the lash is great the pumpkin is bad.

So here are some thoughts: The shamanistic's I posted show side stand switch but Spence in my experience bikes before 86 did not come stock with them tho many including me installed them for safety reasons. When the stand spring weakens bumps can make the stand bounce causing the circuit to cut in and out. However, because you say it has more to do with long rides and heat I tend to think it is a resistance problem over old coils of some type; meaning ignition coils or pickup coils. I've plaid with electrical problems plenty, I still have an old meter in top condition I purchased from Radio Shack back in the 80's, sits on top of one of one of my boxes as tho it still has purpose, but it doesn't. I have as you likely know young flock come by with troubleshooting issues, some with nice modern equipment lots of drop down menus and its a big blabla instead of numbers they pitch features. I use a simple automatic meter I think they run for $30.ish dollars out here, and it makes reading OHM's fast and easy. About the size of a pack of smokes and fits in all my rides, has rubber bumpers too. Get one of those. Measure the resistance/OHM's cold both ignition coils and pickup coils and note it, compare those readings to the book values, take it for a ride where if she acts up she cant leave you stranded, then measure the same components note them down. Then post and we'll know weather they are the problem or we need to look elsewhere Throwing parts at and old bike becomes expensive and disappointing. We'll stay tuned -
