I always lube the o rings with something, lately its been Superlube synthetic grease. Also is the valve at the bottom hoses below the radiator, it can leak, mine did until I used a dremel with a nylon cup brush and then lubed that o ring, also for some applications a light spray of permatex red sealant inside the hose end will stop those pesky leaks.

The 83 awaits a new ignition, sidetracked at the moment because here in Alaska good riding weather is often in very short supply, last year it rained all summer, luckily this year its an awesome clear dry summer, but summer be it cold, dry or wet is still much shorter than down in the lower 48. I may even see snow by the end of august atop the higher 10,000 ft peaks nearby. 89 comes first, 83 is on back burner, parts are still in transit. I have to be honest with myself, I hate riding my 2009 Star 1300 Tourer, it gives me an aching shoulder, needs a different bar pullback, a better seat and a better windshield or fairing. The 89 Venture rides so smooth, no buffeting, seat is right on comfy, it is the bike I want to ride, so I am in a hurry to get the stator fixed and to really scope out any other problems. About the forums, not as much tech talk as I have seen elsewhere. Often why I do not post more here.

Got me a new stator in the mail, in the meantime I am pulling the upper fairing to see why my horns don't work and to fix up some areas around the mirror mounts that are broken, i will be using plastic epoxy and some carbon fiber, i have a bunch of it left over from another project, stronger than fiberglass. i was reading that some people do not like Metzeler tires on the venture, I use Metzelers on my 2009 Star XVS 1300 Tourer and I love them, much better than the stock Dunlops. But I use metzelers air pressure recommendation of 38-40 solo or 40-42 2 up or with gear, I chose the latter as I am over 200 and carry gear with me. Not interested in high mileage tires as I have no plans of leaving Alaska, all riding is local, I may even remove the Metzelers after I check their manufacture date and install some Shinko 230 Tourmasters. I bought a pair for my 83 Honda CX650 and they feel great.

Not a lot of room between regulator and tire. I don't hear much if at all using a car tire on a Venture.

Changed engine oil, its running on a Seafoam mix in fuel, went for a 2am ride with my girlfriend, clutch works great, windshield is NOT usable for at night, needs a new one, has a driveline whine, I believe its excessive middle gear backlash, only on decel that you feel and hear it, after our night ride it fails to hot start back at shop so it needs a starter mod but out of it all the worst I am seeing is a stator replacement, its just not charging, we rode only on the battery it seems and never knew it, won't go past 12.6v. Has stator short to case I find, no biggee, $120 plus gasket and some oil. I am so in love with this bike! Much better riding than my 2009 Star 1300 Tourer.

You are not alone, I also have an 83 but its awaiting a new ignition module but yesterday I picked up an 89 Royale, I worked almost all night on it troubleshooting everything just checking it out, like changing the oil, brake and clutch fluids and even the coolant. Took it for a ride at 2am, parked it, collected my gear and was ready to head home from my shop and it would not start. Went back to it at 8am after it cooled down and it fired right up but will not go higher than 12.6 volts above 2k rpm. PO did recently replace regulator but I found all three stator wires show continuity to the case ground so the stator windings are shorting, time for a new one. And it has a new AGM battery. I expected a much worse bike but so far its almost ridable.

There is also in the much more detailed Service manual such as the dealer re-print that I use of changing the dessicant every two years to keep moisture out of the system, it also has a filter that must be cleaned. Yes it only turns on when in ACC.

New owner of 89 Royale, modernize headsets?
Silverado6x6 replied to Silverado6x6's topic in GPS, Audio, Electronics
J&M headsets were mentioned quite often in archived threads, sounds like a plan to me, the radio sounds good but rather monotone but that could be my old ears, first thing will be 4" two way speakers installed, good waterproof ones. -
I just picked up an 89 Royale this morning, has all the radio, Cb, PTT on left controls, rear passenger module. What has been done to purchase headsets with Bluetooth, to integrate such Bluetooth to bike or is it better to just use the standard 5 pin cord sets? see I know nothing about all of this, its like going from a 20 year old VW to a modern all options caddy, well maybe a loaded 24 year old Caddy...

I got the 89 Royale, just got home from driving to Anchorage making a barter for some rifles and now I own it, here is a brief analysis of bike: It runs, fired right up, no noticeable smoke from exhaust both at sellers and later when I test rode it, oil seepage is coming from a leaking front top cover gasket, cost of RR gasket is $28 each from local Yammy shop. Minor leakage at that not known but appears to have no excessive oil leakage anywhere else, will clean engine, change oil and monitor. A little bit of engine roughness, Seafoam time. Clutch master cylinder was low with contaminated fluid, inoperative completely, had water in it, drained, refilled, bled slave and clutch works, left absorbent pad under slave because I suspect its leaking and thus why owner stated smoke from engine, dripping right on exhaust, very clean low mile used slave on fleabay at my accepted offer of $30 or a rebuild kit for $20 and shipping. As of right now or two hours ago it was fully operational. Has minor fairing damage around mirror mounts, I have resin and carbon fiber cloth for a backside repair, very minor scrapes, luggage in excellent condition, everything works from the CLASS to the cassette radio and CB, horn does not, oh my, that just ruined everything.... Took it for a short spin, tires are in very good condition, tomorrow at 0 dark thirty I will change oil, check coolant, especially check the brake and clutch fluids and most likely will flush all out with new DOT 4. So at this stage I am optimistic engine may have been mis dignosed, owner was told it would be over $1,000 to repair engine, so if I have to pull heads I would be looking possibly at valve seals and gaskets, will just ride it and see for myself. I think this bike is a real winner, its absolutely gorgeous, some blemished on the windshield that do not want to come out, I'll try some different restoration compounds or just a new one.

Help with my 84
Silverado6x6 replied to Wizard765's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
I just removed my 83 tci and replaced the diodes but it was a whipping a dead horse attempt as the eprom probably died a long time ago, bike had been in storage for 17 years, found water in it and when I get the next venture tomorrow an 89 the first thing I do will be to inspect its tci, mod and relocate it. -
I have an 83 picked up two weeks ago, been in a house fire and then put in storage for 17 years, its a massive restoration project, half of the body plastic damaged as well as having to completely rebuild the hydraulics. Not for a novice to attemp but I eat these projects for breakfast, and tomorrow I may be getting another Venture an 89 Royale with engine problems and no clutch. I do not see very many Ventures in Alaska and the ones I have seen cost to much to repair for the average person, but with tools, time and cash anything can be rebuilt.

An update on the 83 restoration, removed and cleaned carbs, still will not hardly run, pulled TCI and opened it up and found it had water in it and all 8 diodes crusty white junk. Took a gamble and spent less than $4 on Radio Shack diodes, replaced them but to no avail, eproms must be shot, will convert to Ignitech in the next week or so. A re-print of the factory service manual of the XVZ12 turned up from Ebay, much better than the Haynes or Clymer manuals. The replacement clutch master cylinder from fleabay turns out to be also not much better than junk, will have to get a piston kit now, new front pads and grips have arrived, first of the fairing pieces should show up soon, others more slowly as I opted to ship Parcel Post rather than Priority. Saturday morning I will be driving again to Anchorage to check out an 89 Royale, here is the image from Craigslist. http://images.craigslist.org/00Y0Y_by9C1JpQc6K_600x450.jpg Owner has not been able to sell it due to "smoke from engine and no clutch" here is the actual Craigslist ad. I may trade him some unimportant items he wants for the bike. http://anchorage.craigslist.org/mcy/3927587241.html

83 TCI parts schematic?
Silverado6x6 replied to Silverado6x6's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
I called up my local Radio Shack, they had the diodes available, I have the circuit board apart, I have modest electronic skills so I am attempting to restore this board. First off this is one of 6 bikes I own, it was recently acquired after being in storage for 17 years, it was insurance totaled after being in a house fire and had most of one side and the rear damaged, I have already bought 80% of all the needed parts already for this bike, and have been through most everything else from the fuel, brakes and other issues, it ran until I put Seafoam in it then just bogged down to barely starting, pulled the carbs, cleaned them, same thing, pulled TCI and all the diodes are junk, its amazing it even ran at all. I paid $350 for this bike, this weekend I am driving to Anchorage to see a very nice looking but apparently badly running 89 Venture, will be trading some items I rarely use and have had for awhile with no plans to use, in other words no money is being exchanged for the 89, if nothing else it may be a donor bike or get the 1200 engine from the 83 I already have. From what I gather the Mk1 1200 has more power than the Mk II 1300 engine? -
The owner sounds like the type of guy who once a problem arises relies on other people to repair ir, manage it or dispose of it, he says he does not have the skills to go into it, me on the other hand have been turning wrenches for 50 some years, at 6 years old I was playing with daddies tools. I have nearly $100,000 of Snapon, a section of a shop where I work as a maintenance supervisor for a concrete batch plant here in Alaska, I pretty much built the place so they give me some slack. Because they could never find another person with my skills to come in and maintain the facility I built. Plus I am a fabricator and machinist, I already own 6 other bikes, two restored, one new and others under restoration. I plan on forming my own business soon, Steel Horse Restorations. I just picked up a fire damaged 83 that had been in storage for 17 years, been working on that one for the last week or so.

First off I already own an 83 that has been in storage for 17 years after a house fire, I am fully restoring that one and its coming along at its own pace but i chanced upon a beautiful 1989 Royale which I believe is the Second Generation? Have not seen it up close or heard it but the owner is giving up trying to make repairs, he says the engine smokes too much and the clutch is out. My guess is the MC has a problem, well I just bought one for the 83. As far as smoking does this engine which I think is just a 1200 does it have a history of valve seal problems? I am bartering with him for the bike, I am not expecting it to be perfect and I can fix just about anything on bikes, this actually could be my 7th bike in the herd.

83 TCI parts schematic?

Thanks for the help, I may just get the new module, it looks like 7 of the 14 diodes are wasted. -
83 TCI parts schematic?

But other parts than the diodes may be gone as well, so is there a breakdown somewhere here of exactly what goes where? I am on a tablet and cannot upload any image but they are the diodes below the transistors. -
Thermal Problems
Silverado6x6 replied to maknak's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
I would momentarily ground the gauge sending unit wire, gauge should peg out high, if not then check for continuity from the gauge to the coolant sender of the wiring itself, if thats good then the gauge is shot. I too am hunting for weasels on my 83 Venture restoration, just spent several days cleaning crystallized brake fluid from the hydraulics. -
Had a busy weekend, have bought all the replacement plastic, front and rear brakes fully operational , drained fork oil, and then I went back to engine, found the sliders in carbs of 1 3 and 4 had seperated and thus the diaphragm s were not working, used green sleave retainer loctite on them. Used too much seafoam and marvel oil in gas so engine will not start without choking, drained fuel and will put fresh gas in today, tach quit, hopefully its just a glitch from plug fouling, those tci units are spendy, will check all plugs to tci for corrosion. Did see some green corrosion inside coil of number 2 coil, could be my problem with tach.

I have installed inline electric shutoff valves on surge unit trailer brakes, these are hydraulic brakes on trailers that uses braking inertia to pump the brakes, but if you are backing the trailer up hill it will lock the trailer brakes up, so I install a hydraulic switch wired to the reverse lights, that shuts off brake fluid when vehicle is in reverse. Easy enough to install before left front brake, hit a switch and your system is electrically independent.

Thank you for the opinions. I have no hills so to speak for a driveway, when I pulled the rear master cylinder, reservoir , line and caliper apart I thoroughly cleaned everything, disassembled the proportioning valve and cleaned it as well. So basically I am after a stock restoration here. So I will put it all together after I flush out the left front caliper. makes sense when I was trying to unload bike from trailer and I needed some form of a hand brake, so I filled the reservoir and bled both from calipers but could not get anything out of the left, never dawned on me on this bike the left front is controlled by the rear brake. Granted all my other bikes are independent I will at least see what its like, I believe I can even adjust the ratio of fluid to the front as I can get adjustable proportioning valves. used to install them on street rod cars.
