89 would be a Gl1500, flat 6 cylinder, has reverse, no stators on these, its a real alternator of which a Saturn car one can be used, or you can buy ones with very high output. $11,0000 is too much, you can get a newer Gl1800 for that money. I own 6 Goldwings, but i know nothing about trikes, but a Goldwing trike is the very best. At the least you should aim for 95 or newer, they are pretty much the same until 98 and then they changed the headlights, i converted my 93 and 95 to the newer style, go cruise over at www.goldwingfacts.com And the alternator comes out very easy on these, just bolts to the left side rear if engine, its nothing like a stator on the earlier Goldwings like the gl1200, gl1100 and older those require engine removal.

I have a notion of just buying a new Vmax and with my skills i can take the fairing from any of my Ventures and make the Vmax into a touring bike. A slap in the face to Yamaha, a challenge.

Tablet unfriendly forum
Silverado6x6 replied to Silverado6x6's topic in Computer help and tips for using this site.
Yeah thats the thing, i do not want an external keyboard, had one on my other pad, too slow, and i am not paying anything extra. I can live with this but it excludes me from adding pics of my bikes, the mods or repairs, so the website was redesigned? I thought it looked different. -
Mysterious Puddle under bike
Silverado6x6 replied to PBJ's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
Is it brake fluid? Could be the clutch slave cylinder, or you are leaking from the rear brake reservoir or its hose to the rear master cylinder. -
I used to be a frequent member several years ago, just recently paid the subscription to use certain features here but i do not use any computers anymore, not even a laptop, instead i use a 12.2 Samsung Galaxy thats Linux with Chrome browser, plus i use the latest Galaxy smart phones, cannot upload any images no matter the size, cannot even post using hyperlink as my keyboard keeps popping up, just to pass on this info. Basically forum is designed for puters, is there a tablet version that will allow uploads? I tried the mobile version but it has no provision. I am not the exception, more and more people are dropping the puter, going tablet and smart phones. I would love to post my mods on other bikes like my touchscreen radio installation on a 95 Goldwing, and one that i will be installing in my Venture Royale. Kinda bums a person to pay for access but you cannot access the tools. My Goldwing forums do like hearing about my Venture and Vmax mods though.

Been posting two Gl1500 restoration projects at Goldwingfacts.com the last two years, one is a tribute bike for my gal that was murdered last year, its a thread called "I lost my back seat partner" if interested or just google Mollie Ragonesi and you will see the threads. Since those Goldwings are mostly done but the older ones like several gl1100 and gl1200 are not yet ready for my time i am switching over to my Ventures, my 89 needs some cosmetic body touchups, the 86 i just picked up needs another radio, the display is nearly dead, the CLASS needs the solder trick done, needs a new antenna base, and needs a few items like the trunk racks remounted. The 85 which does run is being robbed of parts right now, it has a fine radio and has already donated a pair of mufflers. The 83 needs to have its body put back on, i am not too concerned about getting the 83 and the 85 on the road soon. I have an 85 Vmax that was given to me, broken crankshaft, bike left under a tarp for 15 years, i might take certain parts off and add to the 85 Venture or vice versa.

Three Venture deal
Silverado6x6 replied to Godlover's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
I have 18! Normally i would have a list of all my bikes in the signature, its been several years since i posted here and i have been collecting Goldwings and Ventures. Plus i have two 85 Vmax's. I ride one a lot and i post at the Vmax Forums, they really want any 1300 v4 to add a Vboost to, its a very popular modded engine and i was thinking of doing a Vmax/Venture hybrid. Basically a touring Vmax with a fairing, radio etc. I would dearly love to get a 3 bike deal like this, lots and lots of Goldwings, so few Ventures and i doubt Yamaha will ever bring it back. -
Three Venture deal
Silverado6x6 replied to Godlover's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
Ventures are getting pretty rare here in Alaska, i think i own them all! Just picked up a nice running 86 sunday, plus my 89, the 85 and an 83. Got this 86 in a trade he gave me $500 and the Venture Royale for a pristine 95 Virago 750. Cannot post pics from my tablet, sorry, been posting it at my Goldwing forums though. -
Fella gave me his 86 Venture plus $500 for my 95 Virago 750 sunday, rode it 50 miles back home with just the angle tips screwed on, no mufflers at all, sounded like a chevy 283 with glass packs, stole a pair off one of the 1200 bikes and put them on last night, tried posting a pic but the forum hates my tablet, keeps failing.

Will '90 body parts fit an '83?
Silverado6x6 replied to alvald83's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
Rear luggage is all different, I have both an 83 and an 89, the 89 luggage is rigid mounted, the 83 is removable, depends on your preference, in some way I may like the Mk1 luggage because I can remove them like suitcases. I know for a fact the windshield is the same, a Slipstreamer s 140m I think is a current replacement for the Venture. At least for either the 83 or 89. Trim and headlight is different. Don't know if side panels are the same, I think at the least the 83 is solid where the 89 Royale has louvers. -
I was just discussing with my business associate the practicality of establishing a biker only campsite, each lot will have a covered carport, concrete slab, power for recharging accessories, much like a mini rv park but would have a more specialized attention towards bikers and bikers needs. A common cafe and lounge with a widescreen, wifi and some bikers accessories including the option of an onsite minor repair area for limited bike services. We talked about rooms but decided campsites were better, absolute drive through for all as some bikes tour with trailers here in Alaska. All access paved and free of gravel, in the common room close circuit TV of the area so you can see your bike while heading to use the shower or to grab a meal. But we also just thought having on site security would be better. laundry, showers and even overnight rental of decent cabin sized tents, not necessarily cabins but cabins may be an option. If so each cabin will have its own bike carport, ride in, ride out, no turning around.

I buy my clearcoat from NAPA, yes its expensive, actually the hardener costs more, and it takes a supple technique spraying it as its like water, an HVLP gun with a nozzle no bigger than 1.3mm, that is what I use and I have to dial down the pressure just right. 1mm may be better for a bike. A good clearcoat is a UV blocker, its a urethane shield and some paints require it, single stage rattle can clear coats IMHO do not compare. Doing clearcoat is an art, the prep, the coat or coats, the wet sanding between coats, the rubbing afterwards. And not by hand, it can be done but you need a low speed adjustable rpm power tool plus it requires certain techniques or you burn through. Not easy for a novice, I do a fair amount of body and paint on a fleet of company and personal vehicles. A dust free area, low humidity, the right temp, the right lighting. may be better to let a pro do it, but when done right its awesome.

low beam dim
Silverado6x6 replied to Foxtrot's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
I went to HID on my 89, there is a lengthy writeup of soldering and jumping to bypass the stock Yamaha safety equipment. I just cut a small piece of electrical tape and placed a piece over the white reserve light and the blinking LED for now. the problem is that the reserve lighting needs to meet a resistance value, the HID or LED lamps are below that value thus it tries to correct a non existent problem and to notify the rider. -
I use polyurethane sealant under the mounts backed up with stainless washers inside, trunk will absorb humidity, I am actually thinking of keeping a desiccant pack in mine. Another mod I may contemplate is a one way flapper that would allow air to pass out of trunk, when it seals good it really seals good and it retains moisture like a zip lock bag. Another thing I did was to get a rattle can of NAPA trunk paint, its a spatter gray/black type of paint for older style passenger style trunks, and then I lined the bottom with a black thick pile bathroom type of rug. Why use polyurethane? Lasts longer than most silicone sealers, its thicker, its what I use on marine applications. Its not fun to travel and then find everything in trunk soaking wet.

1200 Venture dies for no reason, restarts days later
Silverado6x6 replied to mcguy303's topic in General Tech Talk
BTW when I installed my replacement CDI I located it on top of the airbox, I am using heavy duty velcro to keep it from rattlin around, keep the drain hole on the bottom, tank cover fits just fine if you turn it the right way, beats having to fight everything to get at it where its normally mounted.- 4 replies

1200 Venture dies for no reason, restarts days later
Silverado6x6 replied to mcguy303's topic in General Tech Talk
I think the diodes are dying in the ignition module, on my 83 I had a similar problem, it would start and run one day then would barely run the next, I pulled the CDI and found every single diode wasted, tried replacing them with Radio Shack diodes to no avail so I bought a cheap used one off Ebay which is a rarity as I paid $80 for it, normally used ones are over $200. The Ignitek is around $270, if I had that money I would upgrade to the Ignitek but the 83 is a secondary Venture as I am riding the 89 Royale for now and now itself is limited here in Alaska.- 4 replies

I wish Yamaha would try to compete with the Goldwing again, competition makes for a better product. Like having a resurrected Venture/MAX that has the NON cruiser style but now with the V-Max engine package. Harley may very be seeing a future trend here, they may be realizing just how finicky recent owners are about comfort, more diverse ownership these days.

As a concrete mixer operator AND a motorcycle rider I will say this and I honestly hope it gets into most riders, your air horns are useless, seriously. There is so much noise from driving a mixer truck that at any job site its imperative that hand signals ONLY are used, we do NOT have cameras, and many people who do have them may not be using them anymore, they fail and the economy urges for more important issues than repairing them Just stay THE HECK AWAY from big rigs, you will ruin a drivers life permanently and I even knew of a guy who later committed suicide after literally driving over a biker, smashed him flat. And high beams at a drivers mirror is dangerous, blinds the driver, but now he can just drive into somebody else and not the one behind him because all he sees is spots in his eyes. High beams coming and going pisses off people, and as both a truck driver and a rider I see the ignorance more on the riders side than the commercial driver who often have millions of miles behind them. Bright lights are NOT the answer, being in position to escape or avoiding a bad position is better. Go ahead and flame on, my rig of my day job is bigger, its my sustenance, think I am going to stop driving because some biker just wet his undies? No way Jose, just give us room and later on a weekend we will be giving each other two finger waves because we also ride. Being a motorcyclist is NOT just an advanced bicycle rider who thinks they are special and has impunity. Being a smart rider you can visualize what the other people see, they will turn their head away or close their eyes to bright lights, when they hear loud pipes or air horns their Bose Sound System will just auto cancel it out. Times are a changing.

How about when riding in a country like Oz on the left side? I hear they just nod as it would require using your throttle hand.

I am installing a new Slipstreamer S-104 3/16" thick acrylic crystal clear windshield on my 89 Vr today, and i am using ONLY Pledge until its been confirmed what is truly safe. Too hard to even get a windshield for these older Yammies, actually I am ordering a spare just in case.

Cruise Issues
Silverado6x6 replied to MasterGuns's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
I bought an 89 a couple of weeks ago, mine lights up and everything, nice pretty lights at night, does't work though, cruise control on a bike is still like cream cheese and bagels to me. I havn't felt an overpowering need to investigate the problem but many say its usually in the clutch switch. -
I am restoring an 83 Venture that was in a house fire, having to replace most right side plastic from the dash, windshield to tailights and rear fender, its a royal pain getting plastic that year and getting it shipped to Alaska, otherwise its a low mileage bike with 17k on the odo.

I liked the Shinkos so much after I put them on another bike I went back and ordered the front tire yesterday. So they get less than 8,000 miles. like I said on my other post, those new Metzelers the high dollar tires are now 4 years old and yet with only 1500 miles on them, now even with me riding the 89 VR on good days in a short season here in Alaska I still doubt I will go over 2,000 miles a year, so with tire life from 5-7 years I just figure its best to get the best performing and the Shinkos are from molds made by Yokohama, arguably one of the best tire companies globally.
